A flat sitemap sends page URLs from urlset.url.loc to your output. A sitemap index sends child sitemap URLs from sitemapindex.sitemap.loc through the same fetch-and-parse loop before page URLs are emitted. The workflow below handles both forms, preserves lastmod and source-sitemap metadata, and can continue to CSV, Google Sheets, a database, or link checks.
What the workflow produces
Each final n8n item should contain a canonical URL and, when present, the source sitemap and last-modification value:

}loc is required in a standard sitemap; lastmod is optional metadata. Keep the source file so a later status check, redirect report, or migration audit can be traced back to its input.
Choose the input and trigger
Manual or scheduled runs
For a one-off extraction, add a Manual Trigger, then an Edit Fields (Set) node with a field named sitemap_url, such as https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml. A Schedule Trigger is suitable for recurring inventories.

Webhook or chat input
A Webhook or Chat Trigger can accept the URL from a request. Normalize the incoming property to sitemap_url with Edit Fields so the rest of the workflow does not depend on a particular trigger payload.
Fetch the XML with HTTP Request
- Add an HTTP Request node after the trigger.
- Set the request method to GET.
- Use an expression for the URL:
{{ $json.sitemap_url }}. - Configure the response as text (string), not JSON. XML must reach the parser unchanged.
- Keep the incoming URL available. If your node version replaces the item with the response body, add it back with an Edit Fields or Code node, or use an explicit field such as
source_sitemapbefore the request.
For production runs, enable the node’s error output or continue-on-fail behavior and route failed HTTP responses to a separate error branch. A 404, redirect loop, access-denied response, or HTML error page is not a sitemap and should not enter the XML mapping branch.
Parse XML with the native XML node
- Add the XML node after HTTP Request.
- Choose the operation that converts XML text into a structured object.
- Map the HTTP response body field as the XML input.
Inspect one execution before mapping fields. Namespace prefixes and array shapes can vary with the n8n version and the XML document, so confirm whether the parsed root is exposed as urlset or sitemapindex, and whether repeated children are arrays.
Branch between a flat sitemap and an index
Detect the root
Add an IF or Switch node and test for the presence of sitemapindex. The true branch is an index; the false branch should test for urlset. Send anything else to an error path labeled “unsupported or malformed XML.” Also verify that the document begins with an opening <urlset> and ends with a closing </urlset> for a normal sitemap, with the appropriate namespace present.
Flat urlset branch
For a normal sitemap, map urlset.url into individual items. Use Split Out when the node exposes the repeated entries as an array. Select the loc field as the value to split, or split the complete entry if you also need lastmod. Then rename fields to url and lastmod, and set source_sitemap from the original request URL.
Recursive sitemapindex branch
An index contains child sitemap locations under sitemapindex.sitemap[*].loc. Split that array into one item per child URL, set each item as the next request’s sitemap_url, and connect the items back to the HTTP Request node. The loop is:

- Split child
locvalues. - Fetch each child sitemap with HTTP Request.
- Parse each response with XML.
- Confirm the child is a
urlset(or handle a nested index if your site uses one). - Split
urlset.urland emit page-levelurl.locvalues.
Use a loop or batching pattern so all child files are processed without losing the parent context. Store the child URL as source_sitemap; if you need the top-level index as well, preserve it in a second field such as root_sitemap. A nested index should re-enter the same index branch, with a maximum depth or visited-set safeguard to prevent accidental cycles.
Flatten, normalize, and deduplicate URLs
Split Out mapping
Split Out is easiest when the XML node has a predictable array. Split the complete url entry, then map:

Do not invent a date when lastmod is absent. Keep it null or omit it.
Code-node fallback
When XML output contains awkward nested arrays, add a Code node after parsing. Adapt the field paths to the actual execution data:

Add source_sitemap in the object emitted by your production version so later checks remain traceable.
Canonicalization and filters
Treat the text in loc as the supplied canonical URL. Before deduplication, apply only transformations you explicitly need: trim whitespace, optionally normalize a trailing slash policy, and decide whether fragments should be removed. Do not silently rewrite query strings that may identify distinct resources.

Use an IF node or Code node to filter by hostname, path prefix, scheme, or extension. For example, an SEO inventory may keep only https://www.example.com/; a migration may keep both old and new hosts. Record excluded items in a separate branch when auditability matters.
Deduplicate on the normalized URL. A simple Set-based Code node can retain the first occurrence while preserving metadata:

CSV
Connect the cleaned items to Convert to File (CSV) or the CSV operation available in your n8n version. Include url, lastmod, and source_sitemap. Return the binary file from a Webhook response or write it to your chosen storage.
Google Sheets
Use Google Sheets after flattening. Map one item per row and create columns for URL, lastmod, and source sitemap. Batch writes where your instance supports them rather than issuing a separate spreadsheet operation for every URL.

Feed one URL per item to HTTP status checks, redirect analysis, content scraping, a database insert, or a crawl queue. Keep the extraction and checking stages separate: that lets you rerun failed checks without downloading every sitemap again.
Limits, scale, and reliability
- Per-file protocol limit: one sitemap file can contain at most 50,000 URLs and be no larger than 50MB (52,428,800 bytes) uncompressed. Larger sites must use multiple files and a sitemap index.
- Memory: parsing a 50,000-URL file and holding all items can require substantial memory; n8n’s hosting environment determines whether the CSV or template-style workflow needs more resources.
- Batching: when extracted URLs feed page requests, batch them and cap crawl depth. Do not launch an unbounded request fan-out.
- Rate control: use batching, waits, and respectful concurrency for the target site. Sitemap extraction itself is usually cheaper than fetching every page.
- Context preservation: explicitly map the original URL and source sitemap around HTTP calls, or use Merge/Code steps, so status and redirect results can be joined to the extracted row.
- Caching: if the sitemap rarely changes, store the last successful response and compare hashes or last-modified information before repeating downstream work.
Troubleshooting common failures
XML node returns no URLs
Inspect the parsed execution JSON. The site may be an index, the repeated value may be an array nested under a namespace, or the HTTP response may be HTML. Branch on the actual root and adjust the field path rather than assuming every file is a flat urlset.

Only one URL is emitted
The repeated element was mapped as a single object. Use Split Out on the array, or use the Code fallback and verify that urlset.url is an array.
HTTP Request receives an empty URL
The loop lost its mapped field. Before reconnecting to HTTP Request, set sitemap_url explicitly from the split loc value and confirm it in the node input preview.
Access denied, CAPTCHA, or a non-XML response
Check the status code and content type, then route the item to an error branch. Some hosts restrict automated requests; do not pass the resulting HTML challenge to XML parsing. Add authentication headers only when you are authorized to access the resource.
Duplicates remain
Deduplicate after URL normalization and after all index branches converge. If equivalent URLs differ by host, slash, case, or query parameters, define that policy explicitly before applying it.
Workflow runs out of memory or times out
Split large indexes, process child files in batches, limit downstream page requests, and avoid retaining full XML bodies after parsing. Increase resources only after reducing unnecessary parallelism.

Can one n8n workflow handle both sitemap.xml and sitemap indexes?
Yes. Detect the parsed root, process a flat urlset directly, and loop sitemapindex child locations back through HTTP Request and XML before emitting page URLs.
Should lastmod be used to decide whether to crawl a URL?
Treat lastmod as source-supplied metadata, not proof that content changed. Use it as one input to your own recrawl policy.
How do I prevent an index loop from running forever?
Track visited sitemap URLs and enforce a maximum nesting depth before re-entering the index branch.
