Build a searchable Tkinter panel by combining a ttk.Entry, a ttk.Treeview, and a scrollbar inside a ttk.Frame. Connect the entry to a StringVar, keep the original records in Python, and filter those records whenever the query changes. The example below searches the name and category fields using case-insensitive substring matching; clearing the query restores every record.
What the panel does—and what it does not
Tkinter is Python’s standard interface to the Tcl/Tk GUI toolkit, as the Python documentation explains. A searchable panel is not a special Tkinter widget: it is a small interface assembled from themed widgets. The Python 3.14 ttk reference documents ttk.Entry for text input and ttk.Treeview for displaying hierarchical items or rows with data columns.
This implementation is for a small, in-memory, flat dataset. It leaves the source records untouched, filters them in Python, and redraws the visible rows. It does not search a database or provide a performance guarantee for large datasets.
Build the searchable panel
Save this as a Python file and run it. The Treeview shows two columns, and the search checks both of those fields. Typing updates the results immediately; an empty or whitespace-only query shows all records.

How the search works
Keep source data separate from displayed rows
records is the source of truth; the Treeview contains only the current display. The render() function removes existing display items and inserts the rows it receives. Because filtering always starts from records, clearing the entry can restore the complete list instead of getting stuck with the last subset.
Connect text changes to filtering
The entry’s textvariable links it to query. Calling query.trace_add("write", filter_records) registers a callback for changes to that variable. Tkinter passes callback arguments to the trace function, which is why filter_records(*_) accepts unused positional arguments. The initial render(records) call displays all rows before the user types.

Choose the fields and matching rule
The filter compares the query only with name and category, the two fields shown in the table. strip() ignores whitespace at the ends of the query, and casefold() enables case-insensitive matching. The expression needle in field performs substring matching: for example, searching for off finds the category Office. To search another field, add an explicit comparison for it; avoid searching hidden data unless that behavior is clear to users.
Adapt the panel to your data and interface
Handle different record shapes
The example assumes each record is a dictionary with string-valued name and category keys. If your data can omit keys or contain numbers or None, normalize those values before calling casefold(), for example by converting them to strings or treating missing values as empty strings. For a one-column list, define one Treeview column and compare only that field.

Keep the empty state and keyboard flow clear
The status label displays “No matching records.” when the filter returns nothing. The visible prompt identifies what can be searched, and focus_set() places the initial keyboard focus in the entry. Normal entry editing remains available. If users select a row and then search, a redraw can remove that row from view; decide whether your application should retain a selected record when it still matches.
Use a different approach for nested or larger data
Treeview can display hierarchical items as well as flat rows. For a hierarchy, decide whether a search should inspect only top-level items or also show parents of matching descendants; the flat example does not make that decision for you. For a large or remote dataset, avoid doing costly work synchronously for every keystroke: consider debouncing the callback or querying the data source appropriately. Measure your own workload rather than assuming a particular dataset size will perform well.

Check Tkinter and Treeview compatibility
Official Python binary releases bundle threaded Tcl/Tk 8.6 according to the Python 3.14 Tkinter reference, but a locally installed Python build may differ. Run python -m tkinter to check whether Tkinter launches and inspect the Tcl/Tk version reported by the test window.
The stable Python 3.14 Treeview reference documents the APIs used here, including displaying items and configuring scrolling. A Treeview.search() method appears in Python 3.16.0a0 development documentation and requires Tk 9.1 or newer; it is not a safe assumption for a typical installation. Check both your Python and Tcl/Tk runtime before relying on that version-sensitive API. The filtering pattern above works independently by applying the query to your own records.
