To create a reusable template in Adobe Acrobat Sign, open E-sign > Create e-sign template in the modern interface or Home > Create a reusable template in the classic interface. Add a file, select a document template or form-field layer, set who can use it, configure participants and fields, then select Create. The exact options depend on your Acrobat Sign product and administrator settings.
Choose the right template type
Decide whether you want to save the document itself along with its fields, or save only fields to reuse on documents with the same layout.
| Template type | What it saves | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable document | The full document and its fields | Content that stays stable between agreements |
| Reusable form-field layer | Fields that can be applied to another document with the same layout | Content that may change while the field positions remain reusable |
Adobe explains these template types in its template creation instructions and getting started guide.

- Open the creation workflow. In the modern documented interface, go to E-sign > Create e-sign template. In the classic interface, go to Home > Create a reusable template. If neither option appears, creation may be restricted by an administrator or unavailable in your product’s interface. Adobe documents the routes in its creation steps.
- Add the source file. Select or upload the document. Adobe says uploading multiple files combines them into one template.
- Name the template and choose its type. Select a reusable document or reusable form-field layer based on whether the document content or only the field layout will be reused.
- Set who can use it. Choose personal, group, or organization access from the options available to you. Selected or multiple groups may depend on Enterprise configuration.
- Configure participants and fields. Add enough participant slots for the largest number of recipients who may complete the form. Place fields manually or use automatic placement. Automatically placed fields are assigned to the currently selected participant, so check both field type and recipient assignment.
- Review and create. Inspect the document, participant slots, field types, and assignments, then select Create. The finished template can be found with the Templates filter and used to start another agreement.
Choose access that fits the signing workflow
Personal access suits a template intended for one user. Group access lets the relevant team use a shared template; organization access is broader. Which choices are available depends on the account configuration. Adobe documents these options in its template permission guidance.

Administrators manage library-document controls under Global Settings > Library Documents. Adobe says library templates are enabled by default for individual and team licensed accounts, while Enterprise plans can restrict creation to administrators. Adobe also warns that too many creators can lead to inconsistent boilerplate, duplicate versions, and a cluttered library; a central owner or dedicated template-building group can help keep shared templates consistent. See Adobe’s administrator controls.
Account for interface and product differences
The modern Create Template experience is enabled by default for Acrobat Standard and Pro. Adobe’s documentation updated September 8, 2025, says it is supported but disabled by default for Acrobat Sign Solutions and Acrobat Sign for Government. Adobe also notes that the modern interface does not yet have full feature parity with the classic one. Enterprise administrators can configure the experience at account or group scope. Because settings and availability can change, check the current configuration for your account in Adobe’s modern-interface documentation.

Use the saved template for another agreement
To start an agreement from a saved template, Adobe documents two routes: open Manage > Templates, select the template, and choose Use Template; or choose Start from library on Home. The selected group may be preselected or locked according to the template’s access settings. See Adobe’s instructions for sending agreements from templates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck a field layer before applying it
A field-layer template adds its fields to the document; it does not remove or replace fields already present. Stored recipient assignments remain, and existing fields may overlap or duplicate the applied fields. Inspect the document after applying a layer, especially if its content or layout has changed. Adobe describes this behavior in its field-template guidance.
