You can render initial React children inside a contentEditable element, but that does not make it a normal controlled React input. Once editing begins, the browser changes the element’s descendants while React still expects to manage them. The practical solution is to define an ownership boundary: let the browser manage the editable region, read its contents at a deliberate time, and replace them only through an explicit reset or document change.
Why React warns about children in a contentEditable element
React warns when an element has contentEditable={true} and React children. As React explains in its common components documentation, the browser can change the content after a user edits it, and React cannot reliably update that content afterward. Suppressing the warning does not resolve this conflict.
React normally renders and reconciles a component’s descendants from its output. A browser-managed editable area has a second writer: the browser’s editing behavior. If both try to control the same descendants, later renders can conflict with edits. Decide which side owns the editable content before building the component.
Choose an ownership model
Let React own the children
Use ordinary React-rendered children when the content is for display rather than direct browser editing. React can then update the descendants to match subsequent renders. This model is not suitable for treating a contentEditable region as if it were a conventional controlled input.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Let the browser manage an editable DOM region
For direct editing, treat the editable descendants as a browser-managed island. React’s DOM refs guidance says to avoid changing nodes React manages, while noting that manual changes can be safe in a subtree React has no reason to update. Use a ref to access the host element, and establish explicit rules for reading edits and applying external changes.
Starting component: initial children and browser editing
This shell renders initial children, enables editing, and exposes the browser’s input event to the parent. It is not a complete controlled editor and does not synchronize later child changes.

import { useRef } from 'react';
function Editable({ children, onInput }) {
const ref = useRef(null);
return (
<div
ref={ref}
contentEditable="true"
suppressContentEditableWarning
onInput={onInput}
role="textbox"
aria-multiline="true"
>
{children}
</div>
);
}
useRef(null) creates a ref, and ref={ref} attaches it to the DOM element. The ref’s current property gives event handlers access to that node; changing a ref does not itself trigger a render.
Read edited content from the DOM
Use the event or boundary that matches the feature’s needs. For example, an input handler can read event.currentTarget.textContent for plain text, or a save/blur handler can read the element’s contents when editing ends. Choose the representation deliberately: reading text is different from serializing markup. The example forwards onInput; it does not define a state model or guarantee how content will be normalized.

Apply external changes deliberately
Keep the editable subtree browser-managed while the user is editing. If a new document or an explicit reset should replace its contents, define that as a deliberate operation rather than passing changing children on every render. If React and browser editing both update the descendants, the result can be inconsistent. Remounting on every keystroke is not a synchronization strategy: it can discard focus, selection, and browser editing state.
When to use textarea or contentEditable
| Approach | Content model | Who manages the content | Synchronization and security |
|---|---|---|---|
<textarea> |
Multiline plain text | React can manage a controlled value, or the browser can start from an initial defaultValue. |
Controlled mode requires value and a synchronously updating onChange. Children are not accepted. Plain text avoids the need to inject editor HTML. See React’s textarea documentation. |
contentEditable="plaintext-only" |
Plain text editing in an editable element | The browser edits the element’s content. | Define when the DOM is read and when external content replaces it. The value permits raw text without rich formatting; it does not provide React input synchronization. |
contentEditable="true" |
Editable content that may include formatting | The browser edits descendants that React might otherwise reconcile. | Requires an explicit ownership and synchronization policy. If handling HTML, untrusted markup introduces security risk. |
For ordinary multiline text, a labeled <textarea> is usually the simpler choice. React documents both the controlled and initial-value patterns and recommends associating a label with the field. Choose contentEditable when editing within an element is a real requirement, not merely as a shortcut to a text input.

Set editing mode and accessibility semantics
The HTML contenteditable attribute is enumerated, not a Boolean HTML attribute. Its recognized values are true (or an empty string), false, and plaintext-only. A missing or invalid value inherits from an editable parent. Use an explicit value so the intended mode is clear; MDN’s contenteditable reference describes these values and their behavior.
Editable elements can receive focus and participate in sequential keyboard navigation. Nested editable elements are not included in that navigation by default; tabindex="0" can make a nested editable element keyboard-focusable. For a textbox-like control, provide an accessible name and appropriate semantics, such as the example’s textbox role and multiline indication, and verify keyboard and screen-reader behavior for the actual interface. Those attributes alone do not establish a complete accessibility solution for every editor.

Handle HTML and saved content safely
Do not treat arbitrary children or saved editor markup as trusted HTML. React warns that dangerouslySetInnerHTML overrides a node’s innerHTML and that untrusted HTML can introduce cross-site scripting (XSS); see its common components documentation. If the feature needs to import or render HTML, define a trusted or sanitized input path and a specific sanitization policy. Text content and HTML markup are different data, and the method that reads or restores one should match the content model.
Know what this minimal component does not solve
The shell demonstrates initial children, browser editing, warning suppression, and an event hook. It does not provide an editor-grade document model or a cross-browser solution for selection and caret preservation, paste, undo, input-method composition, or rich-text normalization. If those behaviors matter, implement and test them deliberately in the supported browsers, or choose an editor framework designed to model document structure and selection.
