In Google Drive, click New > Google Sheets, then rename the file from “Untitled spreadsheet” to give it a useful title. You can also start from the Sheets home screen or go directly to sheets.google.com/create.
Create a spreadsheet from Google Drive

Open Google Drive in a browser and sign in to the Google account where you want the spreadsheet.

Click New in Drive.

Choose Google Sheets. Google’s instructions say you can create a spreadsheet from scratch or select a template. To make a blank spreadsheet, choose the blank option if it appears in the menu.

When the spreadsheet opens, click Untitled spreadsheet at the top of the page.

Type a descriptive name and press Enter. The title helps you identify the file later in Drive.
Start from the Sheets home screen instead
If you are already working in Sheets, you can skip the Drive menu. Open sheets.google.com and click New (the plus button), or open sheets.google.com/create to create a spreadsheet directly. Google documents both routes in its computer guide to Google Sheets.

Choose the starting point that fits your task

Use Drive when you want to begin from Drive and see the folder context before creating the file. This is a convenient way to orient yourself, but the documented instructions do not guarantee a particular save folder in every situation.

Use Sheets when you are already in the Sheets home screen or want the direct create link.

Saving and offline access
While you are online, Google Sheets automatically saves changes as you type. Offline work requires offline access to be enabled beforehand. Google’s access instructions describe the offline setup as a Chrome workflow; see Google’s Access Sheets guide for its current instructions. Google also describes the default file name and renaming process in its file creation guide.
Sharing is optional
You do not need to share a spreadsheet to create it. If you later choose to share it, Google Sheets lets you choose whether other people can view, comment on, or edit the file. The Google Sheets computer guide covers sharing.
