Keep the animation object in a variable so it continues running. The example below shows a moving cloud of points and ways to display or export it.
Build and animate a 3D scatter plot
Matplotlib’s mplot3d toolkit adds 3D plotting to Matplotlib by projecting a 3D scene onto a 2D Axes. It supports scatter plots and works conveniently within an existing Matplotlib workflow, though the documentation cautions that it is not the fastest or most feature-complete 3D library.
Each point needs corresponding x, y, and z coordinates. The code below creates a fixed set of points and moves them together through space. It updates the existing scatter collection rather than creating a new collection on every frame.
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from matplotlib.animation import FuncAnimation
# Reproducible starting coordinates for 100 points
rng = np.random.default_rng(7)
points = rng.normal(size=(100, 3))
fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(projection="3d")
# Set fixed limits so the view does not rescale on each frame
ax.set_xlim(-4, 4)
ax.set_ylim(-4, 4)
ax.set_zlim(-4, 4)
ax.set_xlabel("X")
ax.set_ylabel("Y")
ax.set_zlabel("Z")
scatter = ax.scatter(points[:, 0], points[:, 1], points[:, 2])
def update(frame):
# Translate all points in a slow circular path
angle = frame * 0.05
offset = np.array([2 * np.cos(angle), 2 * np.sin(angle), 0])
moved = points + offset
# Path3DCollection's 3D coordinate setter updates the scatter positions.
# Check the setter against the Matplotlib version in your environment.
scatter._offsets3d = (moved[:, 0], moved[:, 1], moved[:, 2])
return (scatter,)
ani = FuncAnimation(fig, update, frames=120, interval=40, blit=False)
plt.show()
Why the callback works
fig.add_subplot(projection="3d") creates the 3D Axes, and its scatter method creates the plotted point collection. FuncAnimation calls update for the frame sequence; here, the frame number determines the translation applied to the original coordinates. The callback returns the changed artist as a one-item tuple.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The scatter collection’s _offsets3d attribute is a practical way to replace its three coordinate arrays, but it is a private attribute. The official Axes3D API documents the 3D scatter method, while the official 3D random-walk example demonstrates the general animation callback structure with lines, not scatter points. Because that example does not establish a public scatter-position setter, verify this update technique against your installed Matplotlib version.
Choose limits, interaction, and performance settings
Keep the view stable
The example fixes each axis from -4 to 4 so the plot does not appear to zoom as the cloud moves. Choose bounds that contain the full range of every frame. If you instead recalculate limits while animating, the changing scale can make stationary motion look like a jump.

Display and rotate the plot
Run the script in an environment with an interactive Matplotlib backend to display the animation. Interactive backends support rotating and zooming an mplot3d scene. Use the explicit 3D Axes object for 3D plotting; Matplotlib notes that pyplot functions have 2D signatures and cannot be used to add content to 3D plots. See the mplot3d tutorial for setup details.
Start without blitting
The example sets blit=False. Blitting can improve performance in some animations, but do not assume it works well for a 3D scatter animation on every backend. If you test blit=True, check both rendering and artist behavior in your environment; the animation API also notes that blitted artists are drawn above other artists regardless of z-order.

Save or embed the animation
Matplotlib documents several routes through its animation API. Which one works depends on the output you need and the writers, codecs, and backend available locally.
ani.save("scatter.mp4")saves through an available animation writer. Confirm that the required writer and codec are installed.ani.to_html5_video()returns HTML containing an HTML5 video representation, subject to the method’s requirements and local encoding support.ani.to_jshtml()returns an HTML/JavaScript representation suitable for embedding in a notebook or page that supports it.
For a file export, replace plt.show() with the save call you intend to use, or save before showing. Test the chosen format on the target machine rather than assuming every writer or codec is present.

Fix common animation problems
- The plot appears but does not animate: Keep a live reference such as
ani. Matplotlib warns that an unreferenced animation object can be garbage-collected, stopping its timer. - The scale jumps: Set x, y, and z limits to cover all animated coordinates, as in the example.
- Export fails: Check that the requested animation writer and codec are available, or use another documented output method such as
to_jshtml(). - The scatter setter raises an error: Confirm the Matplotlib version and the collection API available in that version. The 3D line example’s setter is not a scatter update method; do not substitute it for a scatter-specific update.
Matplotlib’s animation tutorial describes an animation as “a sequence of frames where each frame corresponds to a plot on a Figure.” For a modest animated point cloud in a Matplotlib project, this callback approach is a straightforward fit; demanding performance or more complete 3D features may call for a dedicated 3D visualization library instead.
