Where to put a CSS linear gradient
linear-gradient() produces an image value, not a color. Put it in an image-accepting property such as background or background-image; it will not work as a value for background-color. The gradient is drawn to fit the element’s box and has no intrinsic dimensions of its own. See MDN’s linear-gradient() reference and the W3C CSS Images Module Level 3.

}Choose the gradient’s direction
Without a direction, the gradient runs downward, from top to bottom. Use a side or corner keyword for an intuitive direction, or an angle when you need more precise control. The W3C specification describes the first argument as setting the gradient line and the placement of color stops.
to right: left to rightto top: bottom to topto bottom right: toward the lower-right corner
CSS gradient angles start at the upward direction and increase clockwise: 0deg points up, 90deg points right, 180deg points down, and 270deg points left.

}Use a keyword when the direction is easiest to describe as a side or corner. Use an angle when you want to specify an exact orientation.
Position colors with color stops
A linear gradient needs at least two colors. If you omit stop positions, CSS distributes the colors along the gradient; for example, a two-color gradient transitions between its end colors. Add percentages or lengths to specify where colors occur.

}Here, the blue stop is at 55% of the gradient line. An omitted position on an interior stop is distributed between its neighboring positioned stops. For example, in a gradient with three colors and only the first and last positions specified, the middle color is placed between them.
Create a hard boundary
Give adjacent color stops the same position to create a sharp edge instead of a gradual blend:

}The blue region ends and the orange region begins at the halfway point. This is useful for stripes, blocks, and split-color backgrounds.
Shift the transition midpoint
A color hint placed between two color stops changes where the blend between them reaches its midpoint. It shapes the transition without adding another color. MDN documents color-stop positions and hints in its gradient reference.

Make a repeating linear gradient
Use repeating-linear-gradient() when the color-stop pattern should repeat across the image. The distance between the first and last stops defines the repeating segment.

}This repeats alternating blue and pale-blue bands. If the end of a segment and the beginning of the next use different colors, the boundary is a hard seam. To make repetitions continue as a smooth transition, repeat the first color at the end of the segment. See MDN’s repeating-linear-gradient() reference.
Use newer color interpolation syntax carefully
CSS Images Module Level 4 adds an optional interpolation method that specifies the color space used to blend colors. For example, MDN shows linear-gradient(90deg in oklab, blue, red). This is newer syntax than the basic gradient function; browser support for the interpolation option is not necessarily the same as support for ordinary gradients. Check the compatibility information for your target browsers before depending on it. See the W3C CSS Images Module Level 4 and MDN’s guide to using CSS gradients.

Troubleshoot a gradient that does not appear
- Nothing is visible: Confirm the function is assigned to
backgroundorbackground-image, notbackground-color. Also check that the element has a visible box to paint. - The gradient runs the wrong way: Check the default downward direction and CSS angle convention. For a left-to-right gradient, use
to rightor90deg. - The colors blend in the wrong places: Inspect stop positions and their order. Explicit percentages let you place transitions; same-position stops create a hard boundary.
- A repeating pattern has a seam: Check the first and last colors in the repeating segment. Different boundary colors create a hard seam; repeating the first color at the end can make the transition continuous.
- An interpolation option is unsupported: Test the basic gradient separately, then verify support for the newer color-space syntax in the browsers you target.
Browser support
MDN marks the basic linear-gradient() function as widely available since July 2015. That broad availability statement does not establish equal support for newer color-interpolation syntax, which should be checked separately for your target browsers.
