You can create a donation form in WordPress using the built-in Donations Form block on eligible WordPress.com plans, or a donation plugin such as GiveWP on a self-hosted WordPress site. The right steps depend on where your site is hosted: WordPress.com connects the form to Stripe, while GiveWP lets self-hosted site owners choose among supported payment gateways and ways to display the form.
Choose the setup that matches your WordPress site
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress use different donation workflows. WordPress.com offers its own Donations Form block on eligible plans. On a self-hosted site, you can install a plugin such as GiveWP and publish its form within a page or through other supported display options.
| Option | Where it works | Payment and giving options | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com Donations Form block | WordPress.com Premium, Business, and Commerce plans, according to support documentation reviewed August 11, 2026 | Stripe; one-time, monthly, and yearly donations | Donors need a WordPress.com account and receive an automatic receipt. Funds go to the site owner’s Stripe account. |
| GiveWP | Self-hosted WordPress | The free plugin listing names Stripe and PayPal; available options depend on the form editor and setup | Recurring donations and some advanced features may require a paid add-on or plan. Check current gateway and editor compatibility. |
If you are unsure which WordPress you use, check whether your hosting and site administration are managed through WordPress.com. If you installed WordPress with a separate hosting provider, you are generally working with self-hosted WordPress.

- Install the plugin. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for GiveWP, then install and activate it.
- Create a form. Open GiveWP’s donation form tools and create a new form. Set the giving levels or enable a custom amount, then configure the fields and presentation available in your selected editor.
- Select a compatible gateway. Choose a payment option supported by the form editor you are using. GiveWP cautions that not every gateway works with both its visual builder and older form editor, so check its current compatibility information rather than assuming a gateway will work with every form.
- Connect the payment account. Complete the gateway’s account connection and configuration steps. Check country availability, transaction fees, and any gateway-specific requirements before accepting donations.
- Choose how to publish the form. Add the GiveWP block to a page, place a shortcode or widget where appropriate, or use the standalone form page.
- Run a test transaction. Use the Test Gateway or the gateway’s test mode to walk through the donor flow before promoting the page. This is a recommended precaution; the availability of a test feature does not mean a transaction has been tested for your site.
The GiveWP WordPress.org listing states minimum requirements of WordPress 6.6, PHP 7.4, and MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10+, and recommends SSL/HTTPS. These requirements can change, so check the current listing and your hosting environment before installation.
Understand recurring donations and paid features
WordPress.com’s block supports recurring monthly and yearly giving. GiveWP’s recurring-donation options are separate from the basic form workflow: its official recurring page advertises an add-on at $149 per year and says recurring donations are also available in Plus, Pro, or Agency plans. The page lists Stripe and PayPal recurring donations. Price, packaging, and gateway support may change; verify the current offer and exact compatibility before choosing a plan.
