To rotate cartoon episodes on a YouTube livestream, put authorized video files in an OBS Studio VLC Video source, choose an ordered or shuffled playlist, and turn on Loop Playlist. Then schedule a YouTube live event and connect OBS with the event’s server URL and stream key. This can repeat a playlist, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 service: your computer, OBS, network, files, and rights all need to remain in order.
1. Confirm the cartoons are cleared for livestreaming
Before building the rotation, check that your rights cover broadcasting the specific episodes as a livestream, on YouTube, in the territories where viewers may watch. Finding a cartoon online or owning a copy does not establish broadcast permission.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights, including music rights. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and your license or distribution agreement; if permission is unclear, ask the rights holder before going live.

2. Prepare the daily episode rotation
Choose a structure
Decide whether the rotation should play episodes in a fixed sequence or vary the order. For a planned daily block, an ordered playlist gives you predictable transitions. Shuffle is useful when variation matters more than a fixed sequence. Make a written schedule if the rotation needs distinct morning, afternoon, or evening blocks; OBS’s documented VLC playlist controls cover playback order and looping, not a daily calendar scheduler.

Organize authorized files
- Use only files covered by your livestream rights.
- Give files meaningful names so you can verify the order in OBS.
- Check that each file plays correctly and includes the intended audio before adding it.
OBS documents common local video formats and a VLC Video source for multiple items. The files in this setup are played from the computer running OBS.
3. Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; install the matching version before configuring the source.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene for your broadcast, choose Sources > + > VLC Video, and create the source.
- Add the episode files. In the source properties, add the authorized video files and arrange them in the intended sequence.
- Choose the playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for a fixed order; enable it if episodes should play in a changing order. Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final item.
- Check the scene output. Confirm the picture fits the canvas, audio is present, and the source is visible in the scene. Preview file changes and boundaries before relying on the playlist.
A Media Source can loop one file, but the VLC Video source is the documented OBS option for a multi-file playlist. OBS’s source controls do not provide a documented daily calendar for switching among separate playlists at set times.

4. Schedule and connect the YouTube livestream
- Schedule the event if needed. In YouTube Studio, create a scheduled live stream if you want a public watch page and reminders for viewers.
- Get the encoder details. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the event’s server URL and stream key as prompted. Treat the key as a password: do not share it publicly.
- Start and inspect the stream. Start streaming in OBS, then check the YouTube Studio preview for image, audio, and the correct playlist. Confirm the order and transitions from the live output before leaving it unattended.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a promise that one broadcast can run forever or that interruptions cannot occur. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming help for current event and encoder instructions.

5. Understand copyright interruption and monetization separately
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A detected match may result in a placeholder, a warning, a temporary interruption, or termination; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also lead to termination. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions and coordinate with the rights holder before the broadcast.
Copyright permission and eligibility to monetize are different questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and assess whether content is original and authentic. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its former “repetitious content” policy is called “inauthentic content” and includes repetitive or mass-produced material. A license does not establish monetization eligibility; do not assume that a licensed cartoon rotation will earn ad revenue. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

6. Choose between a local playlist and hosted playout
A local OBS playlist is the hands-on route. A hosted playout calendar is another option for recurring programming. The documented calendar workflow offers recurring daily, weekly, and monthly entries, but vendor documentation alone does not establish uptime or comparative performance.
