WordPress already generates RSS and Atom feeds for site content; use those when they contain the posts and image information you need. Build a named feed with add_feed() only when the selection or output must differ. A visual grid is a theme or block-template project, not a syndication feed.
Choose the result you actually need

Displaying photos in a page does not automatically create a feed endpoint. Conversely, registering a feed does not control how a particular reader lays out images.
Check WordPress’s built-in feeds first
By default, WordPress provides several feeds for recent content, including RDF, RSS 0.92, RSS 2.0, and Atom, plus a separate comments feed. Common URL patterns are:
/feed/for the site’s default feed/feed/rss2/for RSS 2.0/feed/atom/for Atom/feed/rdf/for RDF
Exact availability can depend on the site’s configuration and rewrite settings. Themes do not always expose every feed type, so add a visible link in a sidebar, footer, or another location where visitors can find existing feeds. A text link is sufficient; an icon can also work when it has useful alternative text.

When the default feed is enough
- The feed should contain the same recent posts as the normal site feed.
- The featured image, or the image already present in the post content, is adequate for consumers.
- You do not need a separate URL for a category, post type, or editorial selection.
When to build a separate endpoint
- Only posts meeting a custom query should appear.
- You need a distinct feed name and public URL.
- The XML structure must include specific image fields or other metadata.
Define what “photo” means
Before writing code, specify the image relationship for each entry:
- Featured image: the image representing the post. Themes need
post-thumbnailssupport for the Featured Image interface, and code can check or retrieve it with functions such ashas_post_thumbnail(),get_post_thumbnail_id(), andget_the_post_thumbnail(). - Image in post content: an image embedded in the article body. Extracting the first or all content images requires a deliberate content-processing rule.
- Attachment: an uploaded media item with its own metadata, generated sizes, file location, alt text, and possible EXIF data. An attachment can have its own template, but that template does not define a syndication payload.
Choose an image size appropriate to the destination. A feed usually needs a stable, reasonably sized image URL rather than the largest original file. If an entry has no qualifying image, decide whether to omit it, include the post without an image, or substitute a defined fallback.
Register a named custom feed
Use add_feed( string $feedname, callable $callback ) when you need a distinct feed type. Register it during initialization, and do not begin the feed name with an underscore.

This creates a feed endpoint using the photos feed name (for example, a URL ending in /feed/photos/ on a typical pretty-permalink installation). The callback is responsible for querying the right posts and rendering the complete response.

Flush rewrite rules once
WordPress’s function reference notes that rewrite rules must be flushed once before a newly registered feed works reliably. Do this during plugin activation or a deliberate setup step, not on every page request, because repeated flushing adds unnecessary work and can affect site performance.

If the endpoint returns a 404 after registration, revisit the rewrite flush and then save the site’s permalink settings once to regenerate rules.

Build the query and XML response
The callback should make three decisions explicit: which posts qualify, which image is selected, and which XML elements consumers receive. A minimal implementation can use a custom query and a feed template, but the exact query and MIME handling must match your post types, taxonomy rules, and downstream service.

This is a structural example, not a universal schema. Set the enclosure MIME type from the actual file type rather than assuming every image is JPEG, and include only elements accepted by the service consuming the feed. If consumers need the image inside the description or content, output escaped HTML in the format they document instead of relying on a theme’s featured-image markup.
Use the right template for an on-site photo page
If the requirement is a gallery, use a page or archive template, image blocks, or theme code. In a block theme, a custom template registered through theme.json belongs in the theme’s /templates directory and is intended for a single post, page, or custom post type entry. Attachment templates can render media-specific pages. Neither mechanism registers a syndication endpoint; that remains the job of add_feed().

Publish and verify the feed
- Open the endpoint directly. Confirm that it responds at the intended URL rather than returning a 404 or an HTML error page.
- Inspect the entries. Check titles, permalinks, publication dates, GUIDs, selected image URLs, and the number of posts returned.
- Validate the XML. Look for unescaped ampersands, malformed tags, incorrect character encoding, invalid dates, and broken image URLs.
- Test the intended consumer. Import the URL into the actual feed reader or downstream service. Readers differ in whether and where they display enclosures, content images, alt text, and other fields.
- Make discovery easy. Add a plain-language “Photo feed” link in the sidebar, footer, or feed area, and use descriptive alternative text if an icon is used.
Do not promise a particular visual treatment in every reader solely because the feed contains an image URL. Verify the reader or service your audience actually uses.
Common failure points
The new URL returns 404
Confirm that the feed name is registered on initialization, does not start with an underscore, and that rewrite rules were flushed once after activation. Saving permalink settings can also regenerate the rules.
The feed works but contains no photos
Check the query and confirm that matching posts actually have the image relationship you selected. A post without a featured image will fail a featured-image test even if it contains an image in its content.

The feed has entries but images do not appear
Inspect the raw XML for a reachable, absolute image URL and a correct MIME type. Then check the consumer’s documented support; WordPress cannot force every reader to render an enclosure or HTML image identically.
The gallery looks right but subscribers see nothing
A visual template only changes on-site presentation. Provide a built-in or registered feed URL separately and link to it.
