To create a custom module for Wowza Streaming Engine, write a Java class that extends ModuleBase, compile and package it as a JAR, place the JAR in the Engine installation’s lib directory, register the class in the target application’s Modules tab, and restart that application. Here, “module” means a Wowza server-side application extension—not ordinarily a Java Platform module declared in module-info.java.

What a Wowza Java module is—and when to use one

Wowza describes server-side modules as Java classes loaded when a Streaming Engine application starts. A module is configured for a particular application and can extend application or streaming behavior, including behavior involving HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTSP/RTP. See Wowza’s module guide.

Use a module when you need custom server-side logic associated with an application. Before writing one, check whether a built-in feature or existing module already handles the task. Wowza’s examples cover automatic recording, pre-roll looping, stream scheduling, transcoder controls, moving recorded files, authentication integration, packetization control, and geographic locking.

Choose the right extension point

A module is not the only way to extend the server. Wowza also documents listeners and HTTP providers. Compare the scope and lifecycle you need: application behavior generally points toward a module; server lifecycle events or an HTTP interface may point toward a listener or HTTP provider. Consider the interaction surface, target Engine/API version, dependency packaging, and whether deployment requires restarting an application or the server. The Wowza Java API overview describes these extension approaches as well as IDE and Gradle/Docker Compose development routes.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create and implement the module class

Wowza’s documented example defines a public class extending ModuleBase, imports Wowza module, client, AMF, and request APIs, and includes an application-start hook and a custom method. The API reference describes ModuleBase as the base class that server-side modules should extend; it also provides utilities for handling function parameters and return data and for simplified logging. See the ModuleBase API reference.

public class MyModule extends ModuleBase {
    public void onAppStart(IApplicationInstance appInstance) {
        // Application-start logic
    }

    public void doSomething(IClient client, RequestFunction function,
                            AMFDataList params) {
        // Custom method logic
    }
}

This is an implementation outline, not a complete, ready-to-build project: the example’s imports and surrounding project setup are omitted. Check the method signatures and required types against the API version for your installed Engine. An event hook such as onAppStart runs as part of application startup; a custom method such as doSomething is a separate callable method. Include only the hooks, methods, and dependencies the use case needs.

Compile, package, and install the JAR

  1. Build against the target installation. Select development tooling and dependencies compatible with the Wowza Engine/API version you will run. Wowza identifies its IDE and a Gradle/Docker Compose guide as possible development routes. The documentation cited here does not establish one universal current javac or Gradle command, dependency coordinate set, or Java-version compatibility matrix, so do not assume a build command or Java version applies to every installation.
  2. Package the compiled class as a JAR. Ensure the JAR includes your module implementation and that its class name and package match the fully qualified name you will register.
  3. Copy the JAR to the Engine library directory. Wowza’s procedure specifies [install-dir]/lib, where [install-dir] is the installation directory for the Streaming Engine instance.

Register the module with an application

  1. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the target application and select its Modules tab.
  2. Add a module entry. Give it a unique name, add a description if useful, and enter the implementation’s fully qualified Java class name. The name and description identify the entry for administrators; the fully qualified class name tells Wowza which class to load.
  3. Save the change, then restart the application so it loads the newly added module. Wowza specifies an application restart when a module is added while the application is running.

If you later modify an installed module, Wowza’s guide says to restart Wowza Streaming Engine. Use the application or server logs to verify that startup reached the module; do not treat a successful compile or JAR copy as proof that runtime behavior works.

Keep Wowza modules separate from Java Platform modules

The word “module” has a separate meaning in the Java Platform module system. A named Java module declares dependencies and specifies which packages it exports or opens, typically in module-info.java. Java’s compiler has module-path options for compiling those modules; these language and compiler rules are covered in the Java SE 26 Language Specification and Java SE 26 javac reference.

That Java Platform mechanism is not part of Wowza’s documented custom-module deployment recipe. For the Wowza extension described here, the documented path is a Java class extending ModuleBase, packaged in a JAR, installed in the Engine lib directory, registered with an application, and loaded after a restart. Do not add module-info.java merely because the Wowza extension is called a module.

Troubleshoot loading and external-service calls

  • The application does not appear to load the class: Check that the JAR is in the correct Engine installation’s lib directory, that the registered class name is fully qualified and spelled correctly, and that you restarted the target application after adding the entry. Inspect the logs for the actual startup error.
  • Compilation or startup reports missing or incompatible APIs: Verify that the code and dependencies match the API version associated with the target Engine installation. The API reference is marked v4.11.0, but that label alone does not establish compatibility with every Engine release.
  • An external web-service call fails during TLS/SSL negotiation: Wowza warns that custom code calling external web services on Streaming Engine 4.7.8 or later can encounter SSL handshake failures if required certificates are absent from the Java installation’s trust store. Verify the service’s certificate chain and identify the Java installation actually used by the Engine before changing trust configuration. Wowza describes importing required service certificates into that Java installation’s cacerts keystore and restarting the service; do not copy an old Java-path command without adapting it to the installed runtime.
