To create a blank screen, use an empty <body> and CSS that removes the default margin and paints the viewport. This complete document creates an edge-to-edge white surface:
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>Blank screen</title>
<style>
html, body {
margin: 0;
}
body {
min-height: 100vh;
background: #fff;
}
</style>
</head>
<body></body>
</html>
The body represents the document’s content. Since it contains no visible content, CSS supplies the screen’s painted area. margin: 0 removes the browser’s usual body-edge spacing, while min-height: 100vh makes the surface at least as tall as the initial viewport without preventing future content from extending the page.
What “blank screen” means in HTML
A blank screen can mean several things:
- An empty document with the browser’s normal background.
- An empty white, colored, or image-filled canvas that reaches the viewport edges.
- A temporary page shell that is visually empty now but can accept content later.
HTML provides the document structure; CSS controls the visible surface. You do not need a placeholder paragraph, a transparent image, or JavaScript to make the page blank. An empty body is the simplest valid implementation.

<title>Blank</title>
</head>

</html>
It has no visible body content. The exact color can vary with browser defaults, user settings, or an ancestor context, so use an explicit background when consistency matters.
White screen that reaches the edges
html, body {
margin: 0;
}
body {
min-height: 100vh;
background-color: white;
}
This is the usual choice for a blank loading page, print-like canvas, or test fixture. The margin reset removes the narrow strip that otherwise appears around the body.
Colored screen
html, body {
margin: 0;
}
body {
min-height: 100vh;
background: #111;
}
Replace #111 with any valid color, such as #0b5fff, rgb(20 20 20), or a CSS custom property. background is a shorthand that can include color, images, position, size, and repeat behavior.
Blank screen with a background image
html, body {
margin: 0;
}
body {
min-height: 100vh;
background: center / cover no-repeat url("background.jpg");
}
cover scales the image to cover the painted area, center controls its position, and no-repeat prevents tiling. A very wide or tall image may be cropped because preserving cover proportions is prioritized over showing every pixel.

Empty body
The <body> element is the container for document content. With no children, it has little intrinsic content height. That is why an empty page may not automatically paint a full viewport-height colored region.

margin: 0
Browsers commonly apply a default body margin. Resetting it makes the page surface meet the viewport edges. If you see a white border around a colored body, this is the first declaration to check.
min-height: 100vh
100vh represents the initial viewport height. min-height guarantees at least that much height while allowing normal document flow to grow when you add content. A fixed height can clip or constrain later content and is therefore less suitable for a reusable page shell.
Viewport metadata
Keep this in the head for predictable mobile sizing:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
It tells mobile browsers to use the device-width viewport and an initial scale of one. Without it, some mobile browsers use a wider fallback layout and scale the page down, making the result appear unexpectedly tiny or zoomed.
Build a reusable blank page shell
If the page will later receive a form, application, or dynamically inserted content, keep the document in normal flow:

<body>
<!-- Content can be added here later. -->
</body>
</html>
Normal flow lays block content out in source order. Avoid absolute positioning merely to keep an empty page empty; it adds layout constraints without providing a benefit.
How to test the blank screen
- Save the document as
index.html. - Open it directly in a browser, or serve its directory with your normal local development server.
- Resize the browser window and confirm the background reaches every edge.
- Use the browser’s responsive or device emulation mode to check narrow screens.
- Temporarily add a paragraph inside
<body>to verify that the page grows beyond the initial viewport instead of clipping content.
An empty page has no meaningful text for assistive technology to announce. If the blank state is intentional but part of an application, provide an accessible status or title when content is eventually loaded.
Common problems and precise fixes
A white strip surrounds the page
Set html, body { margin: 0; }. If the strip remains, inspect ancestor elements, browser extensions, or a background applied to only one of html and body.
The color stops before the bottom
An empty body may have almost no intrinsic height. Add body { min-height: 100vh; }. Prefer this to a fixed height if content might be inserted later.
The page is tiny or zoomed on a phone
Add <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> inside <head>. Check that the tag is not duplicated with conflicting values.

The image repeats or is positioned incorrectly
Use an explicit shorthand such as center / cover no-repeat url("background.jpg"). Confirm that the URL is correct relative to the CSS file and that the image request succeeds.

Future content is clipped
Replace a fixed height: 100vh with min-height: 100vh, remove overflow rules that hide content, and let normal flow determine document height.
The screen is not actually blank
Inspect the DOM for text, margins, pseudo-elements, browser extension overlays, or a framework’s default styles. An empty body does not suppress content injected by scripts or third-party widgets.
Performance, reliability, and deployment notes
- An empty HTML document with a small inline stylesheet has negligible transfer and rendering overhead.
- Background images add a network request and can delay the visual result; compress them and provide an appropriate resolution for the largest expected viewport.
- Use a relative image URL that works from the deployed document location, not only from your local file path.
- Keep CSS inline for a one-file placeholder, or move it to a stylesheet when several pages share the same shell.
- Do not add JavaScript unless the blank state must react to application state. JavaScript can introduce a flash of unstyled or nonblank content and creates another failure point.

If your goal is to capture a blank page or verify how a URL renders, ScreenshotNeo can return the screenshot through one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Blank-screen implementation checklist
- Use an empty
<body>when no visible content is required. - Reset
htmlandbodymargins for an edge-to-edge surface. - Use
min-height: 100vhfor viewport coverage that can still grow. - Set
background-coloror the fullbackgroundshorthand when appearance must be deterministic. - Include the viewport meta tag for mobile browsers.
- Test with a temporary child element before shipping a reusable shell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the page blank without CSS?
Yes. An empty body produces no visible document content, but the viewport may retain browser-default background and body spacing. CSS is needed for a predictable color and edge-to-edge height.
Should I use height: 100vh instead of min-height: 100vh?
Use min-height for a page that may receive content. It covers the initial viewport while allowing the document to grow; fixed height can constrain or clip later content.
Is JavaScript required for a blank HTML page?
No. HTML and CSS alone create the blank screen. Add JavaScript only when application logic must change the blank state.
