You can use VLC’s VLM playlist configuration to broadcast files one after another, but VideoLAN’s documented example sends the stream over local HTTP—not directly to YouTube. YouTube’s live ingest guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS and specific 4K/60 fps encoder settings. So VLC documents sequential playlist playback and stream continuity, not a verified, gap-free 4K/60 YouTube workflow. Treat those as separate parts to configure and test.
What “seamless” means in VLC’s documented playlist method
VLC’s VideoLAN Media Library (VLM) can queue multiple inputs on one broadcast channel. When one file ends, VLM starts the next. The example uses sout-keep to keep the outgoing stream from breaking at an item boundary, along with file-caching=1000. That is documented continuity of the output stream; it is not a measured guarantee of zero-gap transitions on YouTube.
VideoLAN’s example outputs MPEG-TS over HTTP. A receiving VLC client connects to the sender’s address, port, and path, such as http://192.168.0.101:8090/stream. This is a local-network streaming example, not a YouTube ingest address. See VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example and its HTTP streaming guide.

Create the VLC VLM playlist
The VLM example is a configuration pattern. Replace the sample file paths with files accessible to the computer running VLC. Keep the HTTP output only when your intended receiver is an HTTP client; do not assume it will work as YouTube ingest.

- Create a text file. Save the VLM configuration as
playlist.vlm. Use VLC’s documented pattern, adapting the paths and channel name to your setup:new stream broadcast enabled setup stream input "/path/to/video-1.mp4" setup stream input "/path/to/video-2.mp4" setup stream input "/path/to/video-3.mp4" setup stream output #std{access=http,mux=ts,dst=:8090/stream,sout-keep} setup stream option file-caching=1000VLM supports multiple
inputcommands for a channel; it broadcasts them successively. The output pattern here follows the documented HTTP MPEG-TS approach. The HTTP guide specifically says to specify a mux. - Start VLC with the configuration. From a terminal in the folder containing the file, run
vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm. The exact executable name or command availability can vary by operating system and installation. - Connect a local receiver. From a VLC client that can reach the sender, open
http://SENDER-IP:8090/stream, replacingSENDER-IPwith the sending computer’s reachable local address. VideoLAN’s example uses a sender and receiver on the same local network. - Check file boundaries and audio. Let the playlist run through every transition and confirm that the next item starts, the audio remains acceptable, and the receiving client stays connected.
sout-keepis intended to keep streaming from breaking at the end of an item, but it does not establish that every combination of media files transitions without a visible or audible pause.
Why this is not yet a YouTube Live recipe
YouTube’s encoder setup uses the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. The key is a credential—treat it like a password and do not publish or share it. YouTube’s setup instructions describe entering those details in an encoder’s stream settings; they do not explain how to put the YouTube RTMPS destination into the documented VLC VLM playlist example while preserving its playlist behavior.

The mismatch matters: the VideoLAN playlist example publishes an HTTP MPEG-TS stream, while YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS ingest. VLC also documents transcoding pipelines, but those examples do not provide a confirmed YouTube-ready 4K/60 RTMPS VLM command. Do not paste a YouTube key into the local HTTP URL or treat the local receiver address as YouTube’s ingest URL. Sources: VideoLAN’s HTTP guide, transcoding guide, and YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

A possible workflow is to use VLC as the playlist source and a separate compatible encoder or relay to handle YouTube ingest. That is an implementation option, not a workflow confirmed by the cited VideoLAN instructions. Confirm protocol compatibility and test the exact software versions, output configuration, and file transitions before relying on it for a live broadcast.

YouTube’s 4K/60 fps ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these settings for 2160p (4K) at 60 fps. The bitrate values are YouTube’s ingest recommendations and listed minimums—not a measurement of your internet connection. Configure an encoder that supports the destination protocol and settings, then confirm that your upload connection can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate.
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 |
| H.264 bitrate | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps listed minimum |
| AV1 or H.265 bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps listed minimum |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Latency | 4K streams cannot use low-latency optimization; YouTube sets them to normal latency |
These are YouTube’s published live encoder settings, not VLC-specific settings. YouTube recommends testing representative content—including audio and movement—and monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Validate the complete setup before going public
- Confirm the ingest path. Identify which component sends RTMP/RTMPS to YouTube and verify that it accepts the playlist output. A local HTTP MPEG-TS destination alone does not establish compatibility.
- Check the stream key privately. Copy the URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room into the compatible encoder’s settings. Never include the key in a public VLM file, screenshot, or shared message.
- Test the actual media sequence. Run every playlist item, including transitions, and listen for gaps, clipping, silence, or mismatched audio levels. A successful first file does not validate later boundaries.
- Verify the delivered format and health. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the received resolution, frame rate, audio, and stability are suitable. Do not infer YouTube delivery quality only from the source file’s properties.
- Test sustained upload capacity. The encoder must maintain its configured bitrate throughout the broadcast. A connection that briefly reaches the target is not proof it can sustain it.
Common problems and what to check
- The local VLC receiver cannot connect: Confirm VLC is running with the VLM file, the receiver uses the sender’s reachable IP address and the configured port/path, and both devices can communicate on the network. The documented HTTP example is a pull protocol: the receiver requests the stream from the publishing device.
- VLC plays the playlist but YouTube does not receive it: The local HTTP MPEG-TS output is not, by itself, proof of RTMP/RTMPS compatibility. Recheck the ingest component and its destination settings instead of substituting a YouTube URL into the documented HTTP example.
- A transition breaks or has a gap: Confirm that each input path is valid and that the files play correctly. The VLM example’s
sout-keepis intended to keep the stream from breaking when an item ends; it does not guarantee a gap-free YouTube transition. - Stream health shows instability: Compare the configured bitrate with the connection’s sustained upload capacity, and check that the encoder uses CBR and the required keyframe interval. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing beforehand.
- 4K low latency is unavailable: This is expected in YouTube’s guidance: 4K streams use normal latency rather than low-latency optimization.
