You can run a continuous video game soundtrack channel on YouTube with an encoder such as OBS Studio, but clear the music and artwork for continuous live rebroadcast first. A game’s general fan-content policy—or the fact that its music appears in other videos—does not automatically give you those rights. Once permissions and Content ID allowlisting are in place, configure a YouTube encoder broadcast, test it privately, and plan for outages and YouTube’s archive limits.

1. Get permission for the music and visuals

Rights clearance is the first step, not a cleanup task after launch. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even a license may not prevent interruption if the relevant owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Build a track-by-track rights inventory

List each recording and composition you plan to play, then identify its owner or administrator. A game soundtrack can include music licensed from outside artists, so permission from the game publisher alone may not cover every track. Check the rules for the exact game and recordings rather than assuming that permission for gameplay videos also covers a music-only radio stream.

Get permission that matches the actual broadcast

Obtain written terms that expressly permit continuous live streaming on YouTube. Confirm the permitted territory, duration, monetization, artwork or visualizer, and whether you may retain a stream archive or replay. Ask every relevant owner or distributor to allowlist your channel in Content ID before testing. Keep the written permissions and contact details accessible in case a claim or interruption occurs. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music: YouTube for Artists.

YouTube’s policy on game-music Content ID references addresses who may submit original game soundtracks as references; it is not a license for a third party to rebroadcast those tracks. See YouTube Content ID reference policy.

2. Enable live streaming and prepare the broadcast

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. Complete YouTube account verification and enable live streaming. YouTube for Artists advises first-time streamers to verify at least 24 hours before going live. See YouTube for Artists.
  2. Create an encoder broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the title, description, visibility, category, thumbnail, and audience declaration to fit the channel and content.
  3. Connect OBS Studio. In OBS, choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS, or connect your YouTube account. Enter the stream URL or service and the stream key supplied by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, share it, or show it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update OBS.
  5. Build a rights-cleared scene. Use only approved artwork, static images, animations, and visualizers. Check that OBS is not capturing desktop audio, notifications, or other unlicensed sound along with the playlist.

OBS Studio is free. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started; use equipment you already have unless your production needs call for something more. No particular PC, capture card, or hardware encoder is required by this workflow.

3. Test privately, then launch

  1. Set the broadcast visibility to unlisted and start a test stream before announcing the channel.
  2. Listen for clean audio, sensible levels, gaps or abrupt transitions between tracks, and any unintended system sound.
  3. Check that the visual scene displays correctly and contains only approved material.
  4. Review the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then watch the stream on the devices your audience is likely to use.
  5. Test what happens when OBS loses its connection and practice restarting or reconnecting before relying on the setup.

YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before a high-production or high-investment stream. Its current guidance is available at YouTube for Artists.

4. Plan for continuous operation and recovery

A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee that one encoder connection will never fail. A local OBS setup depends on the computer, power, internet connection, and encoder process all continuing to work. Decide who or what will notice a failure and how the stream will be restarted.

  • Keep the encoder computer and network stable, and monitor the feed rather than assuming it is still live.
  • Write down the reconnect and restart steps, and test them while the stream is unlisted.
  • Decide whether a person or an automated monitoring setup will respond to a lost connection.
  • OBS’s community guide describes disabling scheduled-stream auto-stop to allow reconnecting after a disconnect, but YouTube may eventually end a broadcast after no content is sent for multiple hours. Verify the behavior in a test channel because platform interfaces and behavior can change. See OBS community guide to YouTube Live Control Room.

5. Choose between one long stream and shorter sessions

A single continuous broadcast is simple for a radio-style channel, but it is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived, but that is not a substitute for a local recording if the archive matters. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams and YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Broadcast design Useful when Trade-off
One continuous stream You want one persistent live destination and can monitor and recover it. Longer than 12 hours may not be archived; DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
Planned shorter sessions Reliable replay or viewer rewind is part of the channel experience. Sessions require planned restarts, and viewers need to find the current broadcast.

If a complete archive is important, record locally as well as streaming and verify that your storage can hold the recording. A local copy does not change YouTube’s own archive or DVR limits.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream is interrupted or shows a placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party material. Stop and review the affected content and permissions; contact the relevant owner or distributor about Content ID allowlisting. A license by itself may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
  • OBS will not connect: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream key and URL are current, and the key has not been mistyped or exposed. Replace an exposed key in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The stream is live but the audio is wrong: Check OBS audio sources and levels, transitions between tracks, and whether desktop audio or notifications are being captured. Repeat the unlisted test after changes.
  • The broadcast drops and does not return: Check the network and encoder, then follow the restart process you tested. Review scheduled-stream auto-stop behavior in a test rather than assuming the broadcast remains reconnectable indefinitely.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may be limited beyond that point. Use shorter sessions if YouTube replay matters and keep a local recording for a complete copy.
