To keep recorded math lessons playing as a YouTube livestream, loop a lesson file or playlist in OBS Studio and send it to YouTube Live Control Room. Your channel must be verified and free of livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. For a true 24/7 broadcast, the computer, encoder, power, internet connection and source files all need to remain available; a local setup is not an unattended uptime guarantee.

Because this stream is for children, decide accurately whether it is made for kids before going live. Also keep your original lesson files: YouTube warns that a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance.
  • Lesson videos you are allowed to use: Check that every recording, slide, illustration, music track and excerpt is cleared for both live streaming and any archive. YouTube makes the content provider responsible for the necessary rights, including music rights; see its Terms of Service.
  • OBS Studio and the source files: Use a local video file for one lesson or a VLC playlist source for multiple files. OBS documents looping for both; consult the OBS Media Sources guide.
  • A stable upload connection: Check upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Its network guidance is at YouTube’s encoder and network recommendations.

Set the stream’s audience correctly

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set the audience designation for the stream. YouTube requires creators to say whether content is made for kids and includes educational content for young children among the factors to consider. Do not assume that all educational or family-safe content receives the same classification; assess the actual intended audience and presentation. YouTube explains the decision in its made-for-kids guidance.

If the stream is designated made for kids, features including live chat, comments and notifications are restricted, and personalized advertising is not available in the ordinary way. The designation also does not by itself guarantee that the stream will appear in the YouTube Kids app. See YouTube’s explanation of made-for-kids features.

Create the YouTube livestream

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule the stream and enter its title and other details. Set the audience designation based on the content assessment above.
  3. Choose the encoder/streaming workflow and copy the stream key and server information shown in Live Control Room.
  4. Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again. YouTube’s setup details are in its encoder livestreaming guide.

Loop a lesson in OBS Studio

For one recorded lesson

  1. Open OBS and add a scene for the lesson stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Name the source and select the lesson video file.
  3. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Check that the video and its audio play correctly in the OBS preview.

For a sequence of lessons

  1. Make a playlist of the lesson files you have permission to use, in the order you want viewers to see them.
  2. Add a VLC Video Source in OBS, choose the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist.
  3. Preview the transitions and listen for gaps, abrupt volume changes or missing audio. OBS documents Media Source and VLC playlist options in its media source documentation.

OBS’s loop controls establish repeated playback; they do not decide which lesson sequence is educationally appropriate. Choose that sequence for your learners and review the entire playlist before broadcasting.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. Use the server option supplied by YouTube if the setup asks for one.
  2. Set OBS’s output resolution and bitrate to suit the source material and the available upload capacity. Keep the combined stream bitrate within the connection’s capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Do not treat a high download-speed result as evidence of sufficient upload bandwidth.
  3. Start streaming from OBS, then inspect the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the YouTube watch page plays correctly, including on a mobile device, and check both picture and sound.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test before making the stream a regular destination. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, previewing in Live Control Room, checking local archive files and monitoring audio and video quality. Follow its stream setup guidance.

Plan for continuity and archives

A local OBS stream depends on the computer, OBS, power, internet connection and source files continuing to work. A fault in any of them can interrupt playback. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends monitoring the stream, so do not treat a successful test as proof that the broadcast will run unattended indefinitely.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a complete replay. Keep the original lesson files independently, and if a replay matters, make a separate archive plan and verify YouTube’s current behavior. See YouTube’s livestream archive guidance.

Useful operating checks

  • Confirm the OBS preview is moving and audio is present before relying on the stream.
  • Check upload capacity against the total stream bitrate and leave the recommended headroom.
  • Check the public watch page and a mobile playback session during the test.
  • Retain lesson originals and check any local recordings rather than relying on YouTube’s archive for a stream longer than 12 hours.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS connects, but YouTube does not show a usable preview Stream key or connection settings do not match the Live Control Room stream. Compare the OBS stream key with the key displayed for the active stream in YouTube Studio. Reset the key if it may have been exposed, then update OBS.
Video stalls or the stream disconnects Upload capacity is insufficient or the connection is disrupted. Check upload speed and bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and monitor the connection during the test.
The lesson plays once and stops Loop was not enabled on the Media Source or playlist. Reopen the source properties and enable Loop for a single file or Loop Playlist for a VLC playlist.
Picture appears but there is no sound The source file may lack audio, or OBS/source audio is not reaching the stream. Play the file locally, inspect OBS audio meters and preview, and confirm sound on the YouTube test watch page.
A complete replay is missing after a long broadcast YouTube may not capture an archive when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Use original lesson files and a separate local archive plan; do not assume the 24/7 stream will produce a full replay.
Expected chat, comments or notifications are unavailable The stream is designated made for kids, for which YouTube restricts these features. Check the audience setting and design the viewing experience around the applicable restrictions.
