To keep a real lake view live on YouTube around the clock, you need a camera that can run at the location, reliable power and internet, and an encoder that sends the camera feed to YouTube Live. You can connect a compatible RTMP camera directly or route the camera through OBS or another encoder. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted service: outages can interrupt the feed, and YouTube does not automatically archive streams that run 12 hours or longer. This guide assumes a live outdoor camera; prerecorded or looped footage is a different kind of stream and should be described accurately to viewers.
Choose what “24/7” means for your lake stream
A true live lake stream shows what the camera sees now. It requires a camera installed at the lake and a continuous path from the camera to YouTube. If you instead stream a recording or loop, tell viewers that it is prerecorded rather than a live camera view. YouTube’s API documentation describes 24/7 live-feed use, but that does not remove the practical dependencies on your equipment, connection and YouTube ingest: YouTube Live Streaming API guide.
Choose a camera and streaming setup
There are three broad ways to get a lake image to YouTube. The right choice depends on whether you need a real-time camera, how much control you want over the feed, and what can reliably run at the site.

| Setup | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-streaming IP camera | A simple, single-camera installation when the exact model supports a compatible RTMP output. | Fewer production controls; confirm the model’s protocols, setup, audio behavior, resolution and continuous-operation limits. |
| Camera plus OBS or another encoder | A setup that needs overlays, external video or audio equipment, or more control over the outgoing feed. | A computer or hardware encoder must keep operating. YouTube lists software and hardware encoders and identifies OBS as an open-source software option with no charge. |
| Cloud streaming service | A creator who prefers hosted playout rather than running an encoder at home or on site. | It adds a service dependency and may add recurring cost; verify camera-feed compatibility, service terms, retention and recovery arrangements. |
YouTube’s overview of supported encoder approaches is at YouTube Help: Choose a live encoder, bitrate, and resolution. A camera with direct RTMP output may avoid a separate general-purpose encoder, but compatibility is model-specific. For example, manufacturer pages describe RTMP/RTSP streaming and IP66 protection for an EXVIST 3MP PoE camera, and RTMP support and weather protection for Reolink’s RLC-520A. These are manufacturer claims, not independent testing or universal specifications: EXVIST camera details and Reolink RLC-520A details. Check the exact model and regional listing before buying.

Check the location before choosing hardware
Plan where the camera will point, how it will receive reliable power and network access, and how the installation will handle weather. The required cable, mount, enclosure and network equipment depend on the site and camera; there is no universal kit. For a remote location, assess the actual connection and power arrangement before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Enable YouTube Live and create the stream
- Verify eligibility and enable live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Choose Go Live and create or configure a stream for the lake camera.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. In a direct-streaming camera, use the camera’s streaming configuration; with OBS or another encoder, enter the details in that encoder’s YouTube service settings. YouTube describes the key as both the password and address for the feed, so treat it as a credential. Do not publish it; reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Start the camera feed or encoder. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the Live Control Room preview looks and sounds right. Then start the broadcast from YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Menu labels can change, but the core flow remains: create the stream in Live Control Room, provide the stream URL and key to the encoder, send the feed, check the preview, and go live. YouTube’s guide to encoder setup is at Choose a live encoder.

Keep the camera feed running and plan for interruptions
A 24/7 feed depends on the camera, its power, network connectivity, encoder or streaming service, and YouTube ingest remaining available. That is a chain of dependencies, not a promise of uninterrupted operation. Check the stream after launch and decide in advance how you will respond if the camera, connection, power or encoder stops sending video. A direct camera may have its own recovery behavior; confirm it for the exact model instead of assuming it will reconnect.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more will produce an automatic replay. If a replay matters, arrange an independent recording or plan shorter broadcasts, and confirm that your chosen equipment and workflow can record as needed. See YouTube’s encoder and live-stream guidance.

Clear rights for everything viewers can hear or see
Use footage and ambient audio you own or are permitted to stream. A natural soundscape can still capture protected music or other third-party content. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted or terminated. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Read YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Understand monetization separately from copyright
Having permission to stream footage or audio does not guarantee that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and require original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced content can be rejected. Reused-content review is separate from copyright review, so a quiet lake view is not automatically eligible or guaranteed to earn revenue. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and assess the complete channel, not just whether the camera feed is lawful.
