To create a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream with a live waveform, build the scene in OBS Studio, add the OBS Waveform visualizer and connect it to the audio source, then send the broadcast to YouTube Live using your stream key. The waveform is not added automatically by YouTube: it is a visual element in your OBS scene. For a genuinely continuous broadcast, also plan for outages, operator monitoring and stream restarts; YouTube’s automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours, not necessarily a single 24-hour session.

What you need before you start

  • An eligible YouTube channel: it must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • OBS Studio: free, open-source software for arranging scenes, mixing sources and sending an encoded stream. OBS Studio.
  • The OBS Waveform resource: it can display a waveform, frequency-spectrum graph or meters from an OBS audio source. Its resource page listed Windows, macOS and Linux support and OBS 27.0.0 as the minimum version when accessed in 2026; check the current listing for compatibility before installing. OBS Waveform resource.
  • Cleared music and visuals: use music and imagery/video you have the right to broadcast on YouTube Live. A consumer music subscription by itself should not be assumed to grant livestream or rebroadcast rights.
  • A reliable upload connection and continuity plan: a local OBS broadcast depends on the computer and network that send it. Decide who will monitor it and how you will recover if the stream or local setup stops.

Build the music-radio scene in OBS

1. Add and arrange the program audio

Open OBS and create a scene for the radio stream. Add the source that will play your music, then confirm its level moves in the OBS audio mixer. If you use a playlist or player, make sure the source continues through the tracks you intend to broadcast and does not accidentally capture unrelated system audio.

2. Add a background and station information

Add a static image or a looped background video, then place any station name, schedule or other branding. Keep important text visible and leave space for the waveform. A moving background is optional: the waveform can react to the audio over a still image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Add the live waveform

Install the OBS Waveform resource using its current instructions, then add its visualizer source to the scene. In the visualizer settings, choose the same OBS audio source that carries the program music. Preview playback and confirm that the waveform or spectrum responds to the music rather than remaining flat. Plugin labels and compatibility can change between releases, so use the current resource listing rather than assuming an older installation guide still matches.

  • Confirm the visualizer is listening to the intended source and responds at quiet and loud points.
  • Check that the waveform and any text are legible and do not cover essential branding.
  • Test a representative section of the actual audio and visuals, not just an idle scene.

Create the YouTube Live stream and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. Create a new stream or schedule one, then open its Stream tab in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding streaming fields in OBS. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
  3. Review the stream’s title, description, visibility and schedule in Studio. These settings determine how viewers find the broadcast; they do not change the waveform or audio source in OBS.
  4. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check the incoming picture and sound, then select Go live in Studio.
  5. While live, monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream health. Confirm the music remains audible, the waveform continues to react and the stream has not stalled or lost its connection.

YouTube documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. If you plan multiple simultaneous broadcasts, check the current YouTube encoder setup guidance and account limits.

Choose output settings your connection can sustain

YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate encoding. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use a resolution and frame rate that your computer and sustained upload can handle. YouTube’s bitrate figures below are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.

Output AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026. The published table varies by resolution, frame rate and codec; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for other output combinations and the latest figures. For a music radio stream with a mostly static image, 60 fps may not be necessary; choose based on the visual content you actually send.

YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Run that test with the planned scene and audio, then check Studio’s incoming preview and stream health before treating the setup as ready.

Plan for 24/7 continuity and archives

“24/7” is an operating goal, not a continuity guarantee from the cited YouTube documentation. With OBS running locally, the broadcast can be interrupted if the computer, OBS, playback source, power or internet connection stops. A continuous service therefore needs active monitoring and a clear recovery procedure, including who can restart the encoder and confirm that YouTube is receiving it again.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish that one uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer will produce a complete archive. If keeping a replay matters, plan for the under-12-hour archive boundary and verify current Studio behavior before relying on a long session’s recording. YouTube also documents limits on active streams, so account for them if operating several channels or simultaneous sessions.

Clear music rights before going live

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams also warns that a creator with a license may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm broadcast and rebroadcast permissions, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting when applicable; do not treat a personal listening subscription as proof of livestream rights.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your priority is keeping a prerecorded music stream running without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The product is the same across plans; only billing length changes. Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

  • Confirm OBS is streaming and that the server URL and stream key match the active stream in YouTube Studio.
  • Check that the key has not been reset or exposed; if reset, replace the saved key in OBS.
  • Verify channel live eligibility and allow time for first-time activation, which can take up to 24 hours.
  • Check OBS connection status and the internet upload path; lower output settings if the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

The waveform stays flat

  • Confirm the music is playing and the OBS mixer shows audio activity.
  • Open the Waveform source settings and select the audio source carrying the music, not an inactive microphone or unrelated device.
  • Check that the visualizer is visible in the scene and not hidden behind another source.

The stream has audio but the waveform does not respond

The stream may be sending audio through a different OBS source than the visualizer monitors. Point the visualizer at the active program source, then preview again with representative playback.

YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast

A Content ID match may be responsible. Stop or replace the matched material, check the rights and channel allowlisting with the rights holder, and follow YouTube Studio’s notice before restarting. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.

The broadcast stops after the computer or network fails

Restore power or connectivity, reopen OBS and the music playback source if needed, then reconnect with the current stream key and monitor Live Control Room for a healthy incoming preview. For a continuous service, assign responsibility for detecting and recovering from interruptions instead of assuming the local setup will restart itself.
