YouTube does not broadcast a folder on your computer by itself. To keep children’s videos streaming continuously, use an encoder to play the files as a looping feed, connect that encoder to a YouTube Live event, and keep the computer, power, and internet connection running. Before you start, confirm you have permission to livestream every video and soundtrack, choose the audience setting accurately, and plan a separate local recording: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.
Before you start: check channel access, rights, and audience
Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. Its current live-streaming guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. If children appear in the live feed, review YouTube’s separate rules concerning minors on camera; those requirements are distinct from the minimum age for the person operating the stream.
Confirm permission for every file
Check the rights for each video, image, and audio track, including background music. Having a copy of a file does not by itself establish permission to livestream it. YouTube identifies copyright strikes and matches to copyrighted live broadcasts as reasons access to live streaming can be restricted. If you cannot confirm the necessary rights, leave that item out.

Set the audience based on the content
In YouTube Studio’s current Live Control Room, select the audience setting that accurately describes the broadcast. The presence of children in a video does not by itself settle whether the content is made for kids; consider the actual intended audience and content. YouTube says made-for-kids live streams have live chat disabled, and comments on archives and upcoming streams and reminder notifications are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. Use the current Live Control Room: YouTube’s audience-setting guidance says the setting cannot be made using Classic live streaming tools.

Prepare the folder as a continuous encoder feed
Build and test a playlist
An encoder must turn the files into one continuous live feed; YouTube does not read or loop a local folder. In your encoder, use its supported media-playback or playlist controls to add the videos, set the playlist to repeat, and check the transition between files. The exact steps and whether an encoder can watch a folder for newly added files depend on that encoder. Check its current documentation for playlist and loop controls rather than assuming that selecting a folder automatically creates a reliable 24/7 sequence.
Test the complete sequence before going public. Confirm that playback advances through the files, returns to the beginning as intended, and produces the audio and video you expect. If you plan to add or replace files while streaming, verify in advance how the encoder handles playlist changes; the available YouTube guidance does not specify those encoder-specific behaviors.

Choose a quality your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 frames per second, its table recommends 10 Mbps. Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the corresponding row in YouTube’s current table; do not treat the 1080p30 value as suitable for every format. YouTube also recommends keeping upload bandwidth about 20% above the stream’s bitrate. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can run continuously.
| Encoder setting | Guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended | Select the secure ingest option supported by your encoder and the YouTube event. |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | Use a constant bitrate profile for the live feed. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set this in the encoder’s output or streaming settings. |
| H.264 bitrate at 1080p30 | 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube | Use the matching YouTube table row for other resolutions and frame rates. |
| Upload capacity | About 20% headroom recommended | Test sustained upload capacity, not just a brief peak. |
Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live event for the channel that will carry the broadcast.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming or broadcast settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Configure the output. Apply the protocol, bitrate, keyframe, resolution, and frame-rate settings appropriate to your chosen profile and connection.
- Start the encoder output and wait for YouTube’s preview. Inspect the picture, sound, and event details in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the event in Live Control Room. Check stream health and confirm that viewers see the intended feed.
Test the stream and plan for interruptions
Test with audio and movement similar to the actual videos, rather than a static screen alone. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, watch for dropped or unstable output, and leave the recommended upload headroom. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream, so an always-on broadcast needs monitoring or a separately configured recovery plan.

If you are recording locally, verify that the recording file is being created and continues to grow during the test. Keep the recording destination on storage with enough capacity for your retention needs; the space required depends on the encoder settings and how long you keep recordings.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
Do not assume a 24/7 YouTube event will produce a complete replay. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If you need a copy, make a local recording and check that it is being saved; the YouTube archive is not a substitute for that backup.

Breaking a broadcast into shorter sessions may make automatic archiving more predictable under YouTube’s stated threshold, but the available guidance does not establish how ending and restarting will affect the viewing experience for a particular channel. Choose between one continuous event and shorter sessions based on whether uninterrupted presentation or more predictable archives matters more to you.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The encoder has not connected, or the server URL or stream key is wrong. | Recheck the event’s server URL and key in both YouTube Studio and the encoder. Make sure the encoder is sending output and wait for the preview before starting the event. |
| The stream disconnects or becomes unstable | Upload capacity is insufficient or the connection is disrupted. | Test sustained upload capacity, leave about 20% headroom, and reduce the bitrate or select a lower-resolution/frame-rate profile if the line cannot reliably sustain the current one. |
| The feed stops after one video | The encoder playlist is not set to repeat, or its playback controls do not behave as expected. | Check the encoder’s current playlist and looping documentation, then test a complete pass and the transition back to the first item. |
| The stream is live but the replay is missing or incomplete | The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use a local recording for a dependable copy. If archives matter, consider shorter sessions while accounting for their effect on the channel’s viewing experience. |
| Chat, comments, or reminders are unavailable | The stream is designated made for kids. | Check whether the audience designation is accurate. YouTube disables these listed features for made-for-kids live streams and related pages. |
| The broadcast is interrupted or access to live streaming is restricted | A copyright match, strike, or other live-stream restriction may apply. | Review rights to the video and soundtrack and check the channel’s Live Control Room status and YouTube notifications before trying again. |
