You can run a meditation podcast as a continuous YouTube live stream by sending a prepared audio-and-visual feed from an encoder such as OBS to a YouTube event. The key limitation: YouTube may not save an archive of a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, even if it was live. If the stream is meant to stay up around the clock, plan for monitoring and recovery as well as playback.

Choose how the stream will run

For a do-it-yourself setup, an encoder on a computer sends the prepared feed to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. OBS is a free, open-source software option; YouTube also supports hardware encoders. You do not need a new microphone just to stream audio that has already been recorded.

A single long event keeps one live broadcast running, but creates an archive risk. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Ending and starting shorter events can improve the chance of an archive, but creates breaks in the live session and separate event records. YouTube does not prescribe an ideal segment schedule.

Set up the YouTube live stream

  1. Verify the channel and enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming setup. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule an event. Set its title, description, visual, and privacy settings. Scheduling creates an event viewers can find and promote; it does not make prerecorded content play continuously or restart a disconnected encoder.
  3. Prepare the meditation scene in OBS or another encoder. Add the podcast audio and a static or gently animated visual. Check that the audio is present and balanced, and that the scene displays as intended. OBS supports scenes and audio mixing, but the exact looping and restart behavior depends on your setup; test it rather than assuming it will continue unattended.
  4. Connect the encoder to the event. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event in YouTube Studio and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. A stream key associates the encoder with the stream, so handle it like a password and do not publish it.
  5. Test before going live. Start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, listen for clean audio, and verify that the watch page is accessible. Make a local recording and confirm its file is growing. Test at the resolution and bitrate you intend to use, including with any other devices that share the internet connection.
  6. Go live and keep checking it. Start the event when the preview and feed are ready. Monitor stream health, audio and video, network stability, and the local recording. A scheduled event or YouTube watch page does not replace monitoring the encoder that is sending the feed.

Choose settings and network capacity carefully

There is no universal bitrate or computer specification that suits every meditation stream. The required upload capacity depends on the bitrate you choose, and YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Upload speed can be lower than download speed, and network disruptions can interrupt a stream. Test the intended settings on the actual connection, particularly if others use the same network.

Computer load also varies with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A simple still image and audio scene may be less demanding than a layered animated scene, but meeting a computer’s baseline requirements does not guarantee it can stream or record reliably. Run a test with your actual scene and settings.

Plan for archives and viewer controls

A live broadcast and its replay archive are separate: viewers may be able to watch while the event is live even if YouTube does not preserve a complete replay. YouTube warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.

DVR is separate from archiving. It lets viewers pause and resume, but YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers that they can rewind to the beginning of a 24/7 broadcast.

If a replay matters, decide how to manage the archive before launch: use sessions shorter than 12 hours and organize the resulting event recordings, while retaining a local copy. Shorter sessions mean the live stream will have interruptions when one event ends and another begins. The platform guidance does not establish a perfect balance between continuity and archive capture.

Check rights before you broadcast

You are responsible for having the rights needed to use all live content on Google services worldwide and for complying with applicable laws and YouTube guidelines. Check permissions for music, sound baths, backing tracks, spoken material, artwork, and reused podcast recordings. A purchase or license for another platform does not automatically establish permission for YouTube livestreaming and the resulting archive.

Keep the DIY stream dependable

  • Arrange and test the encoder before launch, then confirm the preview before going live.
  • Keep a local recording and watch that its file continues to grow; manage disk space so recording does not stop when storage fills.
  • Monitor audio, video, stream health, and the network during operation rather than assuming the computer or YouTube will recover every interruption.
  • For an always-on schedule, decide who will respond if the encoder, computer, or connection fails. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish an automatic restart mechanism for a local encoder.
  • If preserving the replay is important, keep each event under 12 hours and retain local recordings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a microphone for a stream made from already-recorded meditation episodes?

Not for the playback itself; a microphone is useful if you are recording new spoken material.

Does scheduling a YouTube event keep the podcast playing if the encoder stops?

No. Scheduling makes an event and watch page; the encoder still has to send the audio-and-video feed.
