You can create the experience of an always-on Indian classical instrumental radio stream on YouTube with a verified channel, an encoder, a prepared playlist, and music and visuals you have permission to use. Two choices shape the setup: whether you will encode with software or dedicated hardware, and whether your rights cover each recording for live streaming and archiving. Treat “24/7” as an operating goal, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted 24-hour stream: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need to decide before you start
Choose how to encode the stream
An encoder sends your audio and video to YouTube Live. You can use software on a computer; dedicated hardware is optional. YouTube describes hardware encoders as a recommendation for higher-production-value events, not as a requirement for going live. For a radio-style channel with a still artwork image or prepared visual loop, a software encoder may be enough if you can keep it running and monitor it.
Clear the music and visuals
Decide which recordings you will play and confirm that you have permission for the actual use: a public YouTube live stream, in the territories where it will be available, and an archive if you intend to retain or publish one. Use artwork and other visuals only when you have permission to show them. Being able to play a recording privately, or believing its composition is old, does not establish permission to stream a modern recording.
Prepare your channel and stream
- Confirm eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s supported streaming methods include using an encoder.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. Follow the current on-screen setup for the stream; YouTube may change labels and layout.
- Prepare the programme. Arrange the cleared recordings in the intended order. Choose either a still image or a prepared visual loop, and confirm you have rights to use it. Plan how you will move from one session to the next if you want the channel to appear continuously live.
- Set up your encoder. Add the audio source and visual, then enter the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Preview and test. Before the public launch, check the sound and picture in YouTube’s preview, test your planned session handoff, and confirm that any local backup recording works. Check the watch page on desktop and mobile.
- Go live and monitor. Watch Live Control Room for stream health and audio/video quality. For a long-running operation, plan for people to monitor the stream and for power or network interruptions; no particular configuration guarantees uninterrupted service.
Choose a software or hardware encoder

In either setup, use YouTube’s stream URL and a private stream key, check the audio source and artwork, and test the whole path before scheduling a long session. The available guidance here does not establish a single bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval that is right for every encoder and connection, so use the current recommendations shown by YouTube and the settings supported by your equipment rather than copying a one-size-fits-all value.

Get permission for the exact recordings
Check the composition and the recording
A piece of Indian classical music can involve distinct rights in the underlying composition and in a particular sound recording, as well as performer-related rights. An old composition does not automatically make a recent performance or recording free to use. YouTube identifies public-domain music and music used with permission as copyright-safe; verify the status of the actual recording, not just the raga, composition, or composer.
Confirm the licence covers YouTube live and archives
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the person providing the content to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for use on Google services. Indian law defines “communication to the public,” a concept relevant to public internet streaming. The Government of India handbook discusses IPRS and PPL as examples associated with different categories of musical rights and repertoire; that does not establish that either organisation can license every recording or every YouTube use.

Do not assume that a general public-performance licence automatically covers an internet stream or a YouTube archive. The answer depends on the recording, rights holder, licence terms, territory, and intended use.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about capture, not a promise that ending a session before 12 hours guarantees an archive. If retaining recordings matters, keep an independent local recording and check the result after each session.
For an around-the-clock listening experience, a practical approach is to use planned, shorter live sessions with a prepared playlist and a handoff process. This is a workflow inference from YouTube’s archive guidance, not a native YouTube guarantee of an uninterrupted relay. A handoff can still fail because of an encoder, power, network, or platform interruption, so test it before relying on it.

Monitor copyright notices and stream health
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. A licence alone may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID where applicable. If you have a third-party licence, ask the licensor whether the relevant channel can be added to its allowlist.

Troubleshoot common problems
