To create a 24/7 birdsong stream on YouTube, send a continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS, use a looping birdsong file, and schedule OBS to switch between separate dawn and dusk scenes. YouTube must have live streaming enabled for your channel, and the audio and visuals need rights that cover your intended use. Plan recording separately: YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Choose how to keep the stream running
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A local setup gives you direct control over the scenes and schedule, but a computer and encoder must keep running. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. It also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams; that listing is not a reliability guarantee or a price comparison. For a dawn-and-dusk production, compare how each approach handles scene changes, monitoring, disconnects, stream-key access, cost, and local recording before choosing.
Prepare your channel and media
Check live-stream access
Verify your YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Choose birdsong audio and dawn and dusk images or video with rights that cover your intended YouTube use, including duration, territory, and monetization if relevant. Do not assume that a recording found online is cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube says copyright matches or strikes can affect livestreaming; review its copyright guidance and Content ID information.

Decide how you will handle the archive
A 24/7 broadcast is not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan a local recording and check that the recording file is being created and saved successfully. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Build the dawn-and-dusk scenes in OBS
- Set up a consistent canvas. In OBS, choose a canvas and output format that suit your source media and available upload connection. The reviewed YouTube and OBS materials do not establish a bitrate, resolution, or hardware specification for this particular stream, so avoid treating any one setting as a universal requirement.
- Create two scenes. In the Scenes panel, add scenes named Dawn and Dusk. Add the appropriate still image or video source to each, and make sure it fills the canvas as intended. OBS scenes combine sources, and OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions.
- Add looping birdsong. Add an OBS Media Source for a single audio file and enable its loop option. If you are assembling a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop a playlist, but VLC must be installed. Choose a source arrangement that suits your media, then listen through long enough to check for silence, abrupt restarts, or clicks.
- Keep the sound continuous across the visual change. A practical approach is to keep the birdsong source in both scenes or use an arrangement that does not restart it during a scene switch. Test the transition: OBS does not automatically guarantee that separate sources will stay synchronized or that audio will be gap-free.
- Choose a transition. Set a Fade or Cut transition and preview both directions. Check for black frames, unwanted overlays, mismatched framing, and sudden audio changes.

Schedule the scene changes
OBS Advanced Scene Switcher updates describe a Macro Schedule tab that can execute macro actions at specified dates and times. Use a macro to change the active scene on your chosen schedule. The plugin documentation describes the scheduling capability, but it does not determine the right dawn and dusk times for your location or artistic plan. See Advanced Scene Switcher documentation.

- Install Advanced Scene Switcher and open its settings in OBS.
- Create a macro for the dawn change and another for dusk, with each action selecting the matching OBS scene.
- In Macro Schedule, set the dates and times, and select the time zone that matches the schedule you intend to follow.
- Choose whether the schedule should repeat, if that option is available in your installed version, and review how it behaves at the date boundaries.
- Test both transitions in a private or unlisted stream. Restart OBS and test again to confirm the schedule behaves as you expect after a restart.
Sunrise and sunset vary by location and date. Decide whether to use fixed clock times, update the schedule seasonally, or choose a longer visual transition window; do not assume a fixed schedule will track local sunrise and sunset automatically.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose its visibility: public, private, or unlisted. Scheduling can make an upcoming stream visible to subscribers.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public source files, or on the stream itself. YouTube explains stream keys and broadcast settings in its live control room guidance.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health checks. Confirm the picture, birdsong, scene, and audio level before making the broadcast public.
- Open the YouTube watch page on the channel and on a mobile device. Confirm that viewers can access it and that the live picture and sound match the encoder preview.
- Monitor the feed after launch. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Those are recommendations for scheduled events, not guarantees for a 24/7 deployment.
For more complex workflows, YouTube distinguishes a liveBroadcast (the watchable event and video) from a liveStream (the transmitted audio/video settings). Its API supports scheduled or recurring events and documents a continuous feed while another broadcast is bound to the same stream. Check YouTube settings that affect viewers
- DVR: YouTube provides DVR controls; decide whether viewers should be able to rewind during the live broadcast.
- Audience setting: If the stream is marked made for kids, YouTube lists restrictions including disabled live chat and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on livestreams and Premieres, so do not assume the usual chat or monetization features will be available.
- Rights management: Review the stream’s available rights-management settings and ensure your media permissions match your planned use. YouTube’s rules may affect a stream if copyrighted material is detected.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that live streaming is enabled, OBS is sending to the intended stream URL, and the stream key is current and copied correctly. If live streaming was just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for initial access.
- The visual stays on Dawn or Dusk: Check that the macro is enabled, its scheduled time and time zone are correct, and its action selects the intended scene. Test the schedule after restarting OBS.
- The birdsong stops or restarts at scene changes: Check that the audio source is set to loop and remains active in both scenes. Listen during a test transition; keeping audio continuity requires an appropriate scene/source arrangement.
- The picture flashes black or looks cropped: Check each scene’s source visibility, canvas fit, and transition. Preview both scenes before going live.
- The stream ends unexpectedly: Check the computer, OBS, network connection, and YouTube stream health. For a local setup, interruptions to the machine or connection can interrupt the feed; monitor it rather than assuming it will recover unattended.
- No complete replay appears: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use and verify a local recording if you need an archive.
- Copyright affects the stream: Review YouTube’s notices and the rights for each audio and visual asset. Replace or remove material you are not authorized to use.
