For a basic count of whitespace-separated pieces, use len(text.split()). To count a text file, read its contents as a string and apply the same expression. This counts whitespace-delimited pieces—not words according to every language or editorial style.
Count whitespace-separated pieces in a string
When your text is already in a Python string, the simplest approach is:
text = "Python makes this straightforward.
word_count = len(text.split())
print(word_count)With no separator argument, str.split() treats runs of whitespace as separators. It does not produce empty items for whitespace at the beginning or end, so those characters do not inflate the count. An empty string or a string containing only whitespace splits into an empty list and therefore has a count of zero. See the Python 3.14.8 documentation for str.split().
Use the default split, not a literal space
For this basic count, write text.split(), not text.split(" "). Supplying a literal space makes that exact character the separator; repeated spaces can create empty items, and splitting an empty string that way returns ['']. The no-argument form handles runs of whitespace as one separator.

Count words in a text file
Use Path.read_text() to decode a file into a string, then split it:
from pathlib import Path
text = Path("input.txt").read_text(encoding="utf-8")
word_count = len(text.split())
print(word_count)Set encoding to match the file’s actual character encoding; UTF-8 is an explicit assumption in this example, not a guarantee about every file. Path.read_text() returns the decoded contents as a string and closes the file after reading. Its optional parameters follow the meanings used by open(). Details are in the Python 3.14.7 Path.read_text() documentation.

Read with open() instead
If you prefer the built-in file-opening function, use a context manager so the file is closed when the block finishes:
with open("input.txt", encoding="utf-8") as file:
word_count = len(file.read().split())
print(word_count)This reads the file contents into a string and applies the same whitespace-based counting rule.

Process a large file one line at a time
Reading an entire file with read_text() or file.read() holds its contents in memory as a string. If that is unsuitable for a very large file, add each line’s count as you iterate:
word_count = 0
with open("input.txt", encoding="utf-8") as file:
for line in file:
word_count += len(line.split())
print(word_count)This processes the file incrementally rather than building one complete string first. It still counts whitespace-separated pieces, using the same split behavior on each line.

Know what this count means
split() does not strip punctuation or apply linguistic rules. A token such as "Python," remains attached to its comma, and text with no whitespace between parts stays together as one piece. The result is useful when your definition is “pieces separated by whitespace,” but it is not a universal word count.
If your requirements treat punctuation, contractions, or hyphenated terms specially—or involve a language where whitespace does not mark word boundaries—define those rules and use suitable tokenization or custom logic. The correct result depends on the counting rules you need, not just the Python expression.
