The right method depends on what you mean by “copy an image.” In Acrobat Reader, you can copy a selectable image object, capture a rectangular area of a PDF page, or use an extraction workflow that saves embedded images as separate files. Those are different operations, and an online page-extraction service may only create a new PDF from selected pages rather than extract image objects.
Choose the kind of image copy you need

Before copying, remember that the ability to copy does not decide whether you may republish the image. Check the image’s license, the PDF owner’s terms and any applicable copyright exceptions separately.
Copy a selectable image in Acrobat Reader
This is the quickest route when the image is a separate object rather than part of a scanned page.
- Open the PDF in the Acrobat Reader application. The installed application has the Select Tool and Snapshot workflow described here; a browser PDF viewer may expose different controls.
- Check the document’s copy permission. Open File > Properties (or use the document’s properties command), select the Security tab and read Document Restrictions Summary. If copying is not allowed, the author has applied a restriction and the normal copy command may be disabled.
- Choose the Select Tool. Right-click in the PDF and choose Select Tool if it is not already active.
- Select the image. Click the image once. A separate image object normally shows a selection boundary.
- Copy it. Right-click the selected image and choose Copy (or press Ctrl+C on Windows or Command+C on macOS).
- Paste it into the destination. Use Ctrl+V or Command+V in an image editor, document, presentation or other application.
If the click selects text, a whole page or nothing, the artwork may not be a separately selectable image. Move to the Snapshot method below instead of repeatedly trying the same command.

Copy part of a PDF page as an image
Snapshot is appropriate when you need a crop, a diagram embedded in page artwork, or any visible region rather than the original embedded file.
- In Acrobat Reader, choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot.
- Drag a rectangle around the exact area you want. Include the full image and exclude surrounding page content.
- Release the mouse. Reader copies the selected area to the clipboard as an image.
- Press Esc to leave Snapshot mode.
- Paste into your destination application.
A Snapshot is a capture of the displayed page region. It is not the same as extracting the source image object, and the available documentation does not establish that it preserves the original image’s resolution or color profile in every case.
How to save an embedded image as a separate file
Use desktop export for repeat work
For one or a few images, selecting and copying may be enough. For repeat work, use the current image-export commands in desktop Acrobat. Adobe’s help describes copying individual images or saving them to a file, while an archived Acrobat X Standard manual documents a version-specific workflow for exporting raster images separately. Treat the archived instructions as historical: menu names and capabilities can differ in current Acrobat editions.
Use an extraction API for automated jobs
Adobe’s PDF Extract API documentation describes structured extraction output in which extracted images are saved as PNG files. An API is better suited to batches, scheduled processing and applications that need a predictable output directory than to a single clipboard copy. Confirm the current API authentication, quotas, file-size limits and output schema in Adobe’s documentation before implementing it; the cited material establishes the PNG image output, not a universal guarantee about every PDF or every image format.

Understand scanned PDFs
In a scanned PDF, an entire page can behave like one large image. You may be unable to select a smaller embedded object because none exists in the page structure. Snapshot can capture a visible crop. An extraction service may report page images or other structured output, but scan-specific behavior depends on how the PDF was created and on the service’s current implementation.
What “online PDF extraction” actually does
Online tools use similar words for different operations. Adobe’s cited online Extract PDF pages service runs in a browser: you upload a PDF, choose pages and receive a new PDF containing those pages. Its documented limits are up to 500 pages and 100 MB. That service is evidence of page extraction, not of extracting each embedded image object from a page.
Uploading is also a privacy decision. Adobe states that files uploaded to this service are deleted unless you sign in to save them. Read the current terms of whichever service you choose, especially for confidential contracts, customer records, unpublished designs or regulated data. For sensitive files, an offline Reader, desktop export or locally run tool avoids sending the PDF to a third party.
Decision guide: which method should you use?
- Need one image and can select it? Use Select Tool, Copy and Paste.
- Need a visible crop or the image is part of page artwork? Use Snapshot.
- Need downloadable files rather than clipboard content? Use desktop image export or an extraction API.
- Need all images from many PDFs? Automate with an extraction API and verify its output and limits.
- Cannot upload the document? Stay with local Reader or desktop processing.
- Only need selected pages in a new PDF? A page-extraction service fits; it is not an embedded-image extractor.
Troubleshooting
The Copy command is unavailable
Open Document Properties > Security > Document Restrictions Summary. If copying is disallowed, the PDF author’s security settings are the first issue to resolve. Ask the owner for an unrestricted copy or permission rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.

Clicking selects text instead of the picture
The picture may be background artwork, part of a complex layout or a page-sized scan. Use Edit > More > Take A Snapshot and drag a crop.
Nothing is selectable on a scanned page
Capture the required region with Snapshot. If you need separate source images from a large collection, use an extraction workflow that explicitly supports scanned PDFs and inspect its documented output; do not assume page extraction will split the scan into individual objects.
The pasted image is not the quality you expected
Snapshot captures the rendered display region, and the reviewed guidance does not promise original resolution or color-profile preservation. If fidelity matters, prefer an image-object export or API extraction and check the resulting file properties.
An online tool returns pages, not pictures
Check whether its description says “extract pages,” “split PDF” or “create a new PDF.” Those terms indicate page operations. Look specifically for embedded-image export, image-object extraction or a documented image output format.

The browser and desktop menus do not match
Reader’s documented workflow is an application workflow. Browser viewers can have different selection behavior, so open the file in the installed Acrobat Reader application when the commands are missing.

Cost, reliability and privacy considerations
- Clipboard copy: free and local, but dependent on copy permissions and the destination application.
- Snapshot: free and local, but captures the rendered region rather than necessarily the original asset.
- Desktop export: avoids uploading the PDF and is practical for repeated manual work; exact commands vary by Acrobat edition and version.
- Online extraction: convenient for a browser workflow, but requires an upload and is governed by the service’s limits and retention terms.
- Automation: APIs can process batches consistently, but require authentication, error handling and validation of output files.
Copyright and permission
A successful copy operation only proves that software could read or render the content. It does not grant permission to publish, sell, modify or redistribute the image. Keep a record of the PDF source and license, and ask the rights holder when the reuse terms are unclear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy an image from a password-protected PDF?
Only if the document permits copying and you have the password or an authorized unrestricted copy. Check the Security tab rather than trying to bypass the owner’s settings.
Does copying preserve the original image file?
Select-and-copy or Snapshot gives you clipboard content; the available guidance does not guarantee original resolution or color-profile preservation. Use a documented image-export or extraction workflow when the source file matters.
Is an online PDF page extractor the same as an image extractor?
No. A page extractor creates a new PDF from selected pages. An image extractor must explicitly document embedded-image output.
