For a few files, connect your Samsung Galaxy to the computer with a USB data cable, approve access on the phone, choose file transfer, then copy the files from the phone’s storage. A phone that charges over USB is not necessarily ready to transfer data.
Copy files from a Galaxy phone to a Windows PC with USB
The menu wording can differ by Galaxy model, Android or One UI version, and region. The steps below follow Samsung Australia’s USB transfer guide, updated October 7, 2026, which is designed for Australian Galaxy variants. Use the closest matching file-transfer option shown on your device.
- Connect the phone. Unlock your Galaxy and attach it to the PC with a USB-C to USB-C or USB-A to USB-C cable, as appropriate for the computer. You may need a different cable or adapter to match the PC’s port.
- Allow data access. If the phone asks whether to allow access to phone data, approve it. If no prompt appears, open the USB notification on the phone and select Transferring files/Android Auto or the available file-transfer/MTP option.
- Open the phone on the PC. In Windows File Explorer, select the phone in the sidebar or under connected devices, then open its internal storage.
- Find and copy your files. Common folders include DCIM > Camera for camera photos and videos, Download for downloaded files, and Documents for documents. Select what you need and copy it to a folder on the PC.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Do not unplug the cable while a copy window is still running.
Find media saved by an app
If you cannot tell where an image or other media file is stored, Samsung says Gallery’s details can show its file path. Follow that path in the phone’s internal storage in File Explorer.
Fix a phone that does not appear on the computer
- Unlock the phone and approve the request to access phone data.
- Open the USB notification and choose Transferring files or MTP, if available.
- Try a cable known to support data transfer. Samsung warns that “Not all USB cables can transfer data.”
- Connect directly to another PC USB port instead of using a hub.
- If the issue occurs while using Smart Switch, Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guide recommends reconnecting and includes a device-driver reinstall step in Smart Switch.
Choose another way to move files
USB is usually the straightforward choice for manually copying selected files and folders. Other options suit different setups and may depend on the device, software version, region, or computer.

Wireless sharing with Windows
Samsung lists Link to Windows for access to recent images and file sharing with Windows 10 or 11, and Bluetooth for transfers between paired devices. The features available can vary by software version, region, model, and device-management restrictions. See Samsung’s Windows sharing and transfer guidance for the options supported by your setup.
Samsung also describes Quick Share and Samsung Flow for wireless sharing or media transfer. Check Samsung’s Galaxy media-transfer guidance and confirm compatibility for your devices before relying on either option.

Back up or restore with Smart Switch
Choose Smart Switch when you want a broader backup or restore rather than a few manually selected files. Samsung provides PC and Mac versions; connect using a data-capable cable, allow access on the phone, and choose Backup or Restore in the computer app. Check device and data-type compatibility first: Samsung says Chromebooks are not compatible. Samsung’s manual-copy guidance covers Mac as well as Windows, and its USB connection options guide says to locate a connected phone in Finder. The available steps can differ by device and software, so use Samsung’s manual backup and restore guidance for the relevant instructions.
