To copy apps to a new Android tablet, use the Copy apps and data option during the new tablet’s initial setup. You can transfer directly from the old tablet by cable or wirelessly; if the old tablet is unavailable, restore from a Google Account backup if one exists. Neither method is a guaranteed clone: some apps, app data, and files may not transfer.
What you need before you start
- Have both tablets charged and keep the old tablet unlocked. Connect the new tablet to the internet; Google recommends an active connection for setup transfer. See Google’s Android transfer instructions.
- If you plan to use a cable, check both tablets’ ports and get a cable that fits both. An adapter may be needed.
- If you plan to restore from backup, make sure you can access the Google Account associated with the backup.
Copy apps and data directly during setup
- Start setting up the new tablet. When prompted, choose the option to copy apps and data from an Android device. Follow the prompts shown on screen. The wording and screens can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Choose how to connect the tablets. Use a compatible cable if you have one, adding an adapter if needed. Otherwise, choose the wireless option and follow the pairing instructions on both devices.
- Select the content you want to copy, then leave the tablets connected and follow any remaining prompts until the transfer finishes. Google says this may take from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the amount of data.
- When setup is complete, check that the apps and important information you need are present on the new tablet before resetting, trading in, or giving away the old one.
Can you copy apps without a cable?
Yes. Google documents a wireless transfer option in the Android setup flow. Google says its cable and wireless methods support the same data. Wireless transfer avoids the need to find a compatible cable or adapter.
What transfers—and what may not
Google lists apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the device or SIM, text messages, many settings, wallpaper, and call history as content that may copy. Which settings transfer depends on the device and Android version.
Some content is excluded or depends on app support. Google’s transfer guide says the setup flow does not copy:

- Downloads such as PDFs, or photos, videos, and music stored in hidden folders.
- Apps that were not downloaded from Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Accounts other than Google Accounts and their data.
- Contacts or calendars synced with other services, ringtones, and certain settings.
Google’s Android backup guidance also cautions that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Check with the developer of any app whose data matters to you, and verify important files separately rather than assuming they moved.
Restore apps from a Google Account backup
If you cannot use the old tablet, choose the restore-from-backup option during setup of the new tablet and sign in to the Google Account associated with the backup. This works only if backup was enabled on the old tablet and a backup is available. What returns depends on the content that was backed up, app support, and Android version. Google says restoring a backup from a higher Android version to a lower-version device is not supported.

Which transfer method should you use?

Setup timing and tablet-brand differences
Google says its described transfer can be performed only once through the setup flow and recommends doing it during initial setup because the option may not be available later. If you have already finished setting up the new tablet, check the tablet maker’s current instructions for any other migration options. Google notes that steps can vary by device and points Samsung users to additional transfer options through Samsung Smart Switch. Menu names and compatibility depend on the devices.

Open the new tablet and confirm that the apps you need are installed and that important app data, accounts, contacts, and files are accessible. For anything missing, consult the app developer or tablet maker and move or recover the data separately before wiping the old device.
