For an authorized static snapshot, use HTTrack to download a narrowly scoped set of pages and assets into a local folder. It rewrites captured links so you can browse the result offline, but it does not automatically recreate the original site’s server, APIs, logins, or every interactive feature. Start small, inspect the local copy, and build any missing behavior into your development project.
What copying a website gives you
HTTrack describes itself as an offline browser: it recursively downloads site files into a local directory and adjusts retained links for offline browsing. That can be useful when you need a local reference for an authorized development task, such as inspecting page structure, styles, images, and other downloaded files. See the HTTrack documentation and the official project repository.
A mirror is not necessarily a working local version of the website. A downloaded HTML file does not prove that its scripts, images, styles, or interactions were captured and work as intended. Nor does a crawler-produced copy establish that server-side routes, authenticated state, APIs, or all JavaScript-rendered behavior will be reproduced. Treat the mirror as a starting point for inspection, and implement or configure backend-dependent behavior separately where your project requires it.
Before you start: permission and scope
Only copy websites and content you own or are authorized to reproduce. HTTrack’s command-line guide says the crawler identifies itself and obeys robots.txt by default; that behavior is not permission to reproduce copyrighted material. Check the relevant site terms and obtain permission where needed. The guide also documents controls for crawl scope, filters, and limits, which help prevent an unnecessarily broad download: HTTrack command-line guide.

Copy a site with HTTrack
Use the guided interface
HTTrack’s official documentation includes an interface walkthrough. Use it to create a project, enter the authorized starting URL, choose a local destination, and configure the crawl to stay within the pages and files you need. Because the available controls and labels may depend on the installed build, follow the interface documentation for your version rather than relying on a guessed menu path: HTTrack documentation.
Use the command line when you need tighter control
The command-line guide is the reference for HTTrack options, including scope, filters, limits, logins, proxies, and updating a mirror. It documents HTTrack-specific options; do not assume that wget or curl flags work with it. Choose the starting URL and relevant documented limits and filters before running a crawl. The exact command depends on the scope and options you select, so consult the official command-line guide rather than copying an invented or overly broad command.
HTTrack identifies its download as HTTrack, obeys robots.txt by default, and rewrites retained links for offline browsing, according to that guide. Its documentation also describes resuming interrupted downloads and updating an existing mirror; these features can help when a capture is interrupted or needs refreshing.
Run a small capture first
- Start from the narrowest page or directory that serves your task.
- Configure scope and limits using the official guide.
- Capture a small sample before attempting a larger mirror.
- Open the local entry page and check the pages and assets that matter to your work.
- Expand the scope only if the sample shows that additional pages or files are needed and the broader crawl is authorized.
Inspect and use the local copy
Open the captured entry page in a browser and follow the paths you expect to use. Check that the relevant pages load and that their stylesheets, images, scripts, and internal links are present and behave as needed. If a page looks incomplete, compare the missing resource or behavior with the configured crawl scope and the site’s dependencies; the mirror may not have included everything required.

Be particularly cautious with dynamic sites. The documented workflow is a recursive download and link rewrite, not a guarantee of reproducing a production application. If your development task depends on a login, server route, API response, or interactive feature, test it explicitly and expect to implement or mock the required backend behavior separately. The documentation does not establish broad compatibility with every modern interactive site.
Choose an output format for the job
HTTrack documents ordinary mirror output as well as MIME-HTML and single-file modes. The command-line guide describes MIME-HTML as useful when a Chromium-family browser is available and the mirror is large; resources retain URLs, with a shared asset stored once rather than repeatedly embedded. Check browser compatibility and project requirements before selecting a packaging mode. See the HTTrack manual and the command-line guide.
| Need | Workflow to consider | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect a limited set of pages offline | Ordinary mirror files with a narrow scope | Verify pages and assets locally; a downloaded page alone does not demonstrate completeness. |
| Control a larger crawl | Command-line filters and limits | Use HTTrack’s documented options, not assumed wget or curl flags. |
| Package a large mirror for a compatible browser | MIME-HTML mode | The guide describes Chromium-family browser availability as relevant; check compatibility before choosing it. |
| Reproduce application behavior | Mirror for static reference, then implement required backend-dependent parts | The documented mirroring workflow does not establish that routes, APIs, sessions, or all interactions are copied. |
Resume, update, and keep the mirror useful
HTTrack documents resuming an interrupted download and updating an existing mirror. Use those capabilities when continuing a capture or refreshing a local reference, and keep the project’s intended scope in view when doing so. The official project describes these behaviors in its repository and documentation.
Current HTTrack version
The official project site lists HTTrack 3.50-4, dated 2026-09-25, and describes release changes including HTTPS support, files over 2 GB, Windows paths over 260 characters, and WARC output. This is the version information shown on the official project site; check that page again when downloading or installing because release details can change.

If you only need a rendered screenshot rather than a local website mirror, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It does not replace HTTrack when you need local files to inspect or develop against.
Here is a one-call cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses say which page verdict and billing status applied. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

The local page opens, but looks unstyled
Check whether its stylesheets were included in the crawl and whether the page’s retained resource links point to files in the mirror. Revisit the crawl scope and filters in the command-line guide, then capture the needed content and inspect it locally.

Images or other assets are missing
A page can be present even when an asset it references is not. Check the asset path and whether the crawl included the relevant page or resource. Adjust scope or filters using HTTrack’s documented controls, then verify the refreshed local copy.
Links lead somewhere unexpected
HTTrack rewrites retained links for offline browsing, but a link may point outside the captured scope or to behavior that depends on the original server. Check the target and decide whether the linked page belongs in the authorized mirror; do not broaden the crawl without setting boundaries.
A login or interactive feature does not work
A mirror is not proof that authenticated state, APIs, server routes, or JavaScript-driven interactions were reproduced. Test the required behavior separately and provide the project-specific backend implementation or other development setup it needs.
The download stops partway through
HTTrack documents resume behavior. Use its documented workflow to continue the interrupted mirror, then inspect the local pages and assets rather than assuming that resumption captured every required resource.

Common questions
Can I use a copied site as a local development environment?
You can use the downloaded files as a local reference or starting point for authorized work. Whether they are sufficient for development depends on whether your task needs only static assets or also server-side functionality.
Does HTTrack copy a site’s backend?
The documented mirroring process downloads files and rewrites links; it does not establish that the original backend is recreated.
Is a successful crawl proof that every page works offline?
No. Open the local pages and verify the assets and behavior your task depends on.
