The simplest way to copy music from a computer to an Android phone is to connect the unlocked phone with a data-capable USB cable, choose File Transfer on the phone, and copy your music folders into the phone’s Music folder. Keep the artist and album folders intact, then open your music player to confirm that it can find the tracks.
Copy music to Android over USB
Use a USB cable that supports data, not just charging. Menu wording can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer, but the basic steps are the same. Android Help and Motorola document this file-transfer method; Motorola identifies the Music folder as a destination for music files.
- Connect and unlock the phone. Plug it into the computer with a data-capable USB cable and unlock the screen.
- Choose File Transfer. On the phone, tap the USB connection notification and select File Transfer (the label may vary slightly).
- Open the phone’s storage on the computer. On Windows, use File Explorer; on Chromebook, use the Files app.
- Copy the folders. Copy your existing music folders into the phone’s Music folder. If you do not see that folder, create one named Music in the phone’s internal storage.
- Finish safely. On Windows, eject the phone in Windows before unplugging it. Then open your music player on the phone and check that the copied tracks appear.
Android Help also describes moving files with a Google Account and using Quick Share for Windows. Those can help with individual file transfers, but the documentation does not establish that either method preserves an entire library’s playlist organization.

Keep the folders easy to browse
Copy the library’s existing folder hierarchy instead of placing every track in one large directory. A layout such as Artist/Album/track is a practical way to keep a collection navigable; it is not an Android requirement. The Music folder is a sensible storage location, while the player determines how copied files are displayed.

After copying, check the player’s library or folder view. If tracks are missing, look in the app for a scan, refresh, or folder-selection control. Available controls differ between players, so use the app’s own settings rather than assuming Android will display every file in the same way.
What to expect with playlists, tags, and purchased music
Copying audio files and folders is not the same as syncing a music library. Playlist-file support depends on the source library and the Android player, so a manual folder copy may not carry over playlist order or other library details. Do not assume that album art, playlists, or play counts will transfer unless the method and app explicitly support them.

Purchased tracks may also have restrictions. Samsung warns that DRM-protected purchased music may not be compatible with Galaxy devices, and the Music Sync app listing says DRM-protected content cannot be synced. Whether a particular purchase can be copied and played as a regular audio file depends on its rights and format.

Choose an optional app only if its features match your workflow
You do not need a special app for a one-time USB copy. Optional apps may help if you want recurring sync or prefer to browse folders directly, but the feature descriptions below come from their app listings rather than independent testing.

Samsung’s Canada support page and Motorola describe using Android File Transfer on a Mac: install and open the utility, connect the phone, approve access on both devices, and drag music into the phone’s music directory. The cited instructions do not establish whether Android File Transfer remains supported with current Mac and Android versions. Verify that it works with your devices before relying on this method; the Samsung instructions are specifically for devices sold in Canada.

If the computer does not show the phone’s files
- Unlock the phone. USB file access may not be available while the phone is locked.
- Check the USB mode. Tap the USB notification and select File Transfer rather than a charging-only mode.
- Try another cable or port. A cable may charge the phone without carrying data; use a cable confirmed to support file transfer.
- Check the player separately. If files are visible in the computer’s phone-storage view but not in the app, use the player’s library scan or folder-selection controls.
