Use a restartable SSH-based transfer such as rclone over SFTP to copy the archive, then verify the files and disk space before configuring an encoder on the VPS. Copying and streaming are separate network jobs: the first depends on your source’s upload speed; the second depends on the VPS’s outbound bandwidth, resources, and media compatibility.
Choose the transfer route
Pick the route based on where the archive lives. For a local archive, transfer directly from your computer to the VPS. If the archive is already in cloud storage, a supported cloud-to-VPS transfer may avoid downloading it to your computer and uploading it again.

SFTP runs over SSH v2. Rclone documents restartable transfers and integrity checks; checksum availability depends on the storage backend. Its documentation also distinguishes a copy operation from a one-way sync that makes the destination directory identical to the source.
Estimate the transfer time and prepare the VPS
Measure the connection you will actually use
There is no reliable universal time estimate without the archive size and effective upload rate. Total the bytes to transfer, then measure sustained throughput from the source location to the VPS, or to a representative endpoint. A lower-bound estimate is total bytes divided by bytes per second. Allow extra time for protocol overhead, many small files, throttling, retries, and verification; start early enough to recover from an interruption.

Network rates are often shown in bits per second, while rclone’s bandwidth limiter uses bytes per second. Convert units before setting a limit; do not enter a bit-rate figure as though it were bytes per second. See rclone’s bandwidth documentation.
Check capacity, access, and credentials
- Confirm the VPS has free disk space for the archive and any additional working files your encoder may need.
- Choose a destination directory readable by the account that will run the encoder. SFTP paths can be relative to the VPS account’s home directory, so confirm how your configured remote interprets the path.
- Use a trusted SSH host key or known-hosts setup and SSH key authentication. Do not disable host-key checking.
- Protect transfer credentials and, later, the YouTube stream key with restrictive permissions. Avoid putting secrets in public examples, shared shell history, logs, or source repositories.
Copy the archive with rclone over SFTP
Configure the remote
Install rclone on the source machine and configure an SFTP remote that connects to the VPS using its SSH host, account, and authentication method. The remote name in the command below is an example, not a real server. Follow the SFTP backend instructions for your setup, and confirm that the destination path is valid for that account.
Run a copy operation
For a one-time upload, use copy rather than a mirroring operation. Replace the local path and remote destination with your actual paths:
rclone copy /path/to/archive vps:/path/to/archive --progress --log-file transfer.logThe vps: prefix refers to a configured rclone remote named vps. The progress display and persistent log are useful for a long transfer. If the connection drops, restart the same copy operation; rclone’s documented transfer behavior is restartable, but the amount of work left depends on what completed and the files involved.

Use sync only when you intend to mirror
If you will update the library repeatedly, a sync workflow may be suitable, but it has different consequences: one-way sync makes the destination match the source and can remove destination-only files. Preview the planned changes with a dry run or equivalent before running a command that can delete data. For a first upload, a copy-style operation is the safer fit.
A basic SFTP or SCP client can be simpler for a small transfer. Do not assume every client invocation resumes automatically after interruption; check the behavior of the specific client and command you use.
Verify the files before relying on the playlist
A completed transfer command is not proof that the planned stream will play correctly. Check the destination before configuring a long-running broadcast:
- Compare source and destination file counts and total sizes.
- Use checksum comparison where supported by the source and destination backends; exact checksum availability varies.
- Open or probe representative media files on the VPS, including files with different formats or encoding characteristics if the archive is mixed.
- Confirm the encoder account can read the files and that the VPS still has adequate free disk space.
- Test the intended playlist order and confirm that playback advances as expected.
Rclone describes integrity checks and transfer resumption in its documentation; these checks do not replace testing the actual files with the software you plan to use for playback.

Configure YouTube Live from the VPS
Get the ingest details securely
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or open the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder running on the VPS. YouTube describes the stream key as the address/password for the encoder feed; treat it as a credential. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s documented reset process. See Manage live stream settings and Create a live stream with an encoder.
Match the encoder to the media and YouTube’s current guidance
Use YouTube’s current settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options; supports up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current encoder settings page rather than relying on a single figure that may not fit your stream. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
Whether to remux or transcode depends on the files and encoder path. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video; transcoding decodes and re-encodes it, adding compute demand and potentially affecting quality. Compatibility depends on the actual codecs and container, while CPU or GPU load depends on the resolution, filters, and software path. Without those details, a universal FFmpeg command or setting would be misleading.
Validate the VPS-to-YouTube stream before going live
The archive upload uses the source connection’s outbound capacity. Once the files are on the VPS, the live stream uses the VPS’s outbound connection instead. Check the server’s available upload throughput and ensure it can sustain the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; if you use primary and backup streams, account for both. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a VPS plan will deliver a particular rate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Start the encoder with enough time to inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check stream health and test representative audio and motion rather than relying on a still frame or a brief file sample.
- Confirm the playlist advances and that the stream remains stable at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Start the public broadcast only after the preview and health indicators are acceptable.
YouTube advises testing and monitoring before and during a stream. Its recommendations and interface can change, so use the current streaming tips and encoder settings when preparing your setup.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming an archive, confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for every video and audio track. A transfer or a successful encoder preview does not establish permission to broadcast the material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies for your content and channel before starting; this workflow does not determine whether particular material is authorized or whether it meets YouTube’s monetization and reused-content requirements.
