You can convert a WebP image to JPG on Windows without installing anything if an image editor already on your PC can open WebP and offers JPEG/JPG as a save or export format. Use that editor’s conversion command—not a filename change—and check the result: JPG cannot preserve transparency, so formerly transparent areas will show a background.
Before you start: check whether an installed app supports WebP
Windows does not guarantee that every image app or installation can read WebP. Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codec overview describes WebP as an extension codec available through the Microsoft Store; WIC codecs may be built in or added as extensions. Microsoft’s Windows app file-type reference, updated June 23, 2026, includes both .webp and .jpg in its photo viewer/editor file types, but that category listing does not guarantee support in a specific app on your PC.
To try an existing editor, right-click the WebP file in File Explorer and look for an image editor under Open with. You can also open an editor first and use its Open command. If the image opens, check whether the editor offers JPEG or JPG in its save or export format list. If it does, you can proceed without adding a dependency.

If the file will not open, the problem is likely WebP decoding support, not a failed conversion. Try another image editor already installed on the PC, or check Windows’ app association and extension options. Microsoft’s Windows file extension guidance explains how to look for an app for an unknown file type. A Store codec may be needed if none of your installed apps can decode WebP, so a no-install route is not available on every Windows setup.

Convert WebP to JPG using an installed editor
- Open the .webp file. In File Explorer, right-click it and choose an installed image editor, or open the editor and use its Open command.
- Choose Save as or Export. Select JPEG or JPG from the format list. The exact command and labels depend on the editor; confirm that JPEG/JPG is actually offered before continuing.
- Save with a new name. Keep the .webp original by giving the output a distinct filename, such as
photo.jpg. - Open and inspect the JPG. Confirm that it opens as a JPEG and check its appearance, especially any areas that were transparent in the WebP.
Do not simply rename photo.webp to photo.jpg. A changed suffix does not encode the image as JPEG; the editor must save or export it in that format. Microsoft’s Office guidance on image formats describes JPEG as an available image save format, but it is not a Paint-specific conversion procedure.
Why a transparent WebP gets a background in JPG
WebP can contain optional alpha transparency. JPEG cannot preserve that transparency, so areas that were see-through must become visible pixels in the JPG. Depending on the editor, that may mean flattening the image against a background color; the color and available controls vary by app. Inspect transparent edges and other formerly clear areas in the saved file, and choose a suitable background if the editor lets you set one.

If transparency must remain, keep the WebP or save a PNG copy instead of relying on JPG. Microsoft’s image-format guidance describes PNG as supporting transparency and recommends JPEG for pictures with many colors. These are format-use distinctions, not a guarantee that converting a particular image to one format will produce a specific visual or file-size result.

Choose JPG or PNG based on what the image needs

If the WebP is animated
WebP can also contain animation, while the save-as steps above assume a still image. Editors may handle animated WebP differently when exporting to JPEG: an app might select a frame or refuse the conversion. Check the editor’s behavior and preserve the original if you need all frames; a single JPG cannot retain the animation.

Windows version note
Microsoft’s .NET System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Webp API documentation says WebP support is available since Windows 10 version 1809. That statement applies to the documented API; it does not establish that Paint, Photos, File Explorer thumbnails, or every Windows installation can open WebP without an extension. Microsoft also says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, in its Windows extension and file-type guidance. File conversion support and Windows security support are separate considerations.
