Convert a WebM recording to an MP4 file using YouTube’s recommended upload format—MP4 container, H.264 video, and a supported audio codec such as AAC-LC—then handle the live stream separately in YouTube Studio. Conversion prepares a video for upload; it does not start a live broadcast or establish how videos are ordered in a live playlist.

What converting the file does—and does not do

A WebM-to-MP4 conversion changes the video file into a format YouTube recommends for uploads. It does not schedule a live event, send an encoder feed to YouTube, or automatically add the video to a sequence of prerecorded videos during a live stream.

YouTube documents upload encoding, live encoder ingestion, and live-stream management as separate workflows. Its live-management guidance covers scheduled streams and trailers, but does not establish a workflow for sequencing converted videos as a “live playlist.” See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations, live encoder settings, and live-stream settings.

Prepare an MP4 for YouTube upload

Use upload settings, not live encoder settings

For an uploaded video, YouTube recommends MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. It also recommends progressive video, encoding at the source frame rate, and AAC-LC audio among the supported audio options. A 48 kHz audio sample rate is recommended. For SDR uploads, YouTube recommends BT.709 color.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

For the MP4 to be easier to begin playing while it downloads, YouTube recommends fast-start encoding, with the moov atom at the front of the file and no edit lists. Not every conversion app exposes these options; check its output settings or documentation if you need to confirm them.

Preserve the source rather than changing it unnecessarily

Keep the original aspect ratio and frame rate where possible. Choose a conversion tool that can produce an MP4 with H.264 video and a supported audio stream without unintended cropping, stretching, frame-rate changes, or audio loss. Check the finished file from beginning to end, especially if the source has variable frame rate, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or unusual dimensions.

YouTube’s upload bitrate values are recommendations, not a required ceiling: its 2026-retrieved upload page lists 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate video and 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate video; the page does not show a publication date. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory conversion targets. Avoid treating a higher bitrate as a way to restore detail that was absent from the WebM source.

Choose a converter by its output controls

The available controls vary by application and operating system. Before converting, verify that the tool lets you select MP4, H.264 video, a supported audio codec such as AAC-LC, and the source frame rate and aspect ratio. No particular converter or exact command is established here, so use the selected tool’s own instructions rather than relying on an unverified command.

Upload the converted file and manage the live event separately

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its help page also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Rules can change; consult YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Upload the MP4 as a regular video. Use YouTube Studio’s video-upload workflow. Confirm the video, audio, aspect ratio, and playback before relying on it for an event.
  3. Configure the live event in YouTube Studio. Create or choose a scheduled stream and edit its settings. YouTube’s documented live settings include selecting a trailer. A trailer is a regular uploaded channel video, not evidence of a playlist sequence: YouTube specifies a duration of 15 seconds to 3 minutes and recommends that its aspect ratio and resolution match the stream.
  4. Test before the event. If you are sending an actual live encoder feed, test representative motion and audio and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom; account for both primary and backup streams where applicable.

Do not confuse an uploaded MP4 with a live encoder feed

Setting Converted upload Live encoder feed
Purpose A recorded video file uploaded to YouTube A real-time feed sent from an encoder to YouTube
Video format guidance MP4 container and H.264 video recommended YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as ingestion options
Audio guidance Supported option such as AAC-LC; 48 kHz recommended AAC or MP3
Rate and keyframes Encode at the source frame rate; upload bitrate values are recommendations Constant bitrate; up to 60 fps; recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds
What YouTube does next Processes the uploaded video Automatically transcodes live streams to create playback formats

These are different specifications for different jobs. Do not apply live-ingestion bitrate or keyframe requirements to a converted upload as though they were file-conversion requirements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the live-feed details.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. The computer at home does not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
