To convert a video in VLC Desktop, open Media → Convert/Save, add the source file, choose a destination filename and conversion profile, then click Start. Play the result afterward to check that both picture and sound work.

Open VLC and choose Media → Convert/Save.

In the Open Media dialog, click Add, select the video you want to convert, and click Open.

Click Convert/Save to open the conversion settings. In Destination file, enter a path and filename for the output. Include the extension you want, such as

Choose a suitable option from Profile. The profile sets the conversion settings; typing a file extension in the destination name does not select a matching video or audio codec.

Click Start and allow VLC to process the file. The time required depends on the file and your computer; VideoLAN’s documentation does not specify a universal conversion time.

Open the output file and check that the video plays and the audio is audible. If the file is missing or its sound is incorrect, review the selected profile and audio settings.

Extension, container, and codecs are different
An extension such as MP4 or MKV identifies a container—the file format that holds the media streams. The video and audio codecs inside that container determine how those streams are encoded. Changing the destination extension alone does not ensure that VLC creates the codecs or settings your device supports.

Match the profile to where you will play the file
Choose a profile appropriate for the intended use, then test the finished file on the device or player where you plan to watch it. There is no universal VLC profile guaranteed to work on every target device, and available output options can vary by build.
What VLC can—and cannot—convert
VideoLAN lists broad input support, including AVI, ASF/WMV, MP4/MOV/3GP, Matroska (MKV), FLV, and several MPEG formats, as well as multiple audio and video codecs. That describes supported input examples, not a guarantee that every source can be converted to every output profile. See VideoLAN’s VLC features page for its format and codec information.

Get VLC for desktop
VideoLAN describes VLC as free and open-source and provides downloads for major desktop platforms on its official VLC download page. The version displayed there can change, so check the page for the current release and platform downloads.
