HandBrake converts a video into a file suitable for use as a YouTube Live source; it does not broadcast or loop that file as a 24/7 live stream. For the full workflow, convert and check the video in HandBrake, then send it to YouTube through a separate live encoder—or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake is a video transcoder: it reads a source and creates a new video file. Its YouTube-oriented Creator presets are a reasonable starting point for a file you intend to use in a live encoder. They produce MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. The right preset still depends on the source and the resolution and frame rate you want to use. HandBrake’s official presets documentation describes the available preset behavior.
A separate live encoder must send the video feed to YouTube Live. That encoder—not HandBrake—must also provide whatever looping, scheduling, and reconnection behavior your 24/7 setup needs. The exact controls vary by encoder, so check that product’s current documentation before relying on it for continuous operation.

Convert the source file in HandBrake
- Open the source. Launch HandBrake and choose the video file you plan to use. Check that the source itself has the picture, audio, and duration you expect.
- Choose a YouTube-oriented Creator preset. Select a preset appropriate for the target resolution and frame rate, taking the source quality into account. Creator presets use MP4, H.264, and AAC stereo; do not assume that one preset is ideal for every source.
- Set the frame-rate behavior deliberately. Where suitable, preserve the source’s recorded frame rate. HandBrake’s Constant Frame Rate (CFR) option makes the output use one frame rate throughout; Peak Frame Rate (PFR) caps higher-rate portions while leaving lower-rate portions unchanged. CFR is a file-encoding choice, not a substitute for configuring the live encoder’s frame rate. See HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation.
- Choose quality with the source and file size in mind. There is no single HandBrake quality value established as right for all sources. A higher-quality encode can create a larger file; inspect the result rather than treating a setting as universally optimal. HandBrake explains the trade-offs between constant quality and average bitrate in its Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate documentation.
- Enable Web Optimised for an MP4 when useful. This places the MP4 container header at the beginning of the file, commonly called fast start. It can help web delivery, but it does not make HandBrake broadcast or loop the video. HandBrake explains this option in its Web Optimised documentation.
- Encode, then play the completed file from beginning to end. Confirm that both video and audio work and that the file plays through before loading it into the live encoder. This check can catch conversion problems before they reach the broadcast.
Configure the separate live encoder for YouTube
Use YouTube’s live-encoder guidance for the broadcast settings; do not copy file-encoding settings from HandBrake into the encoder by assumption. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video. Its guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the maximum keyframe interval is 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

YouTube’s published H.264 live bitrate recommendations include these examples. They are live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake file-encoding targets:
| Live output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are recommendations published by YouTube Help and accessed in 2026, not measured results. Choose a live quality your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s networking advice calls for 20% bandwidth headroom; test the stream and monitor its health while it is live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube’s streaming tips.

- In YouTube’s live setup, create or select the stream and obtain the ingest details and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast.
- In the separate encoder, enter the YouTube ingest URL and stream key using the encoder’s YouTube setup instructions. Choose the video codec, output resolution and frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to match YouTube’s current guidance and your connection.
- Load the converted file into the encoder as its source. Configure looping or scheduling in that encoder if it supports the behavior you need; check its documentation for what happens at the end of a file and after a disconnection.
- Start a test broadcast before depending on a 24/7 run. Check YouTube’s stream health, confirm that motion and audio arrive as intended, and verify that the encoder behaves as expected at the end of the video and after a network interruption.
Keep file-upload settings separate from live settings
If you upload the converted video to YouTube as a regular video, that is a different workflow from sending it as a live feed. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, fast start, and encoding at the recorded frame rate. These upload recommendations should not be confused with live-encoder requirements such as CBR and a 2-second recommended keyframe interval. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Common problems and what to check
- The video converts but no live stream appears. HandBrake only creates a file. Load that file into a separate live encoder and configure the YouTube ingest details there.
- The live feed stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health. Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the live output quality if necessary, preserve the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test again.
- The file looks or sounds wrong before broadcast. Play the completed encode through in a media player and check both picture and audio. Revisit the preset, frame-rate choice, and quality settings in HandBrake.
- The MP4 starts slowly in web delivery. For an MP4, enable HandBrake’s Web Optimised option. It changes the file’s fast-start layout; it does not fix live-ingest or looping configuration.
- The stream stops when the video ends or YouTube disconnects. Confirm that the chosen encoder supports the required looping or scheduling and recovery behavior, and consult its documentation. HandBrake alone does not provide those live-stream controls.
- The stream key is rejected or the wrong stream receives the feed. Recheck that the encoder has the current ingest URL and key for the intended YouTube stream. If needed, regenerate or replace the key through YouTube’s live setup and update the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
