To convert two-column HTML to PDF, render it with a browser or HTML-to-PDF engine using a print stylesheet, set the page size and margins deliberately, and inspect the resulting PDF. First identify what “two-column” means: continuous text flowing between columns needs different layout rules from two independent panels sitting side by side.
Choose the right kind of two-column layout
Before changing CSS, determine how the content is arranged. A conversion can preserve a browser layout only if its print rules and the renderer handle that layout as intended.
Continuous text columns
CSS multi-column layout divides a text flow into columns. Properties such as column-count, column-width, and column-gap describe the arrangement. For example, column-count: 2 asks for two columns, while the gap controls the space between them. WeasyPrint documents support for simple multicolumn layouts, but also notes limitations involving constrained-height layouts, spanning, some column breaks, and pagination or overflow. Test the actual content rather than assuming every column arrangement will paginate as desired.
Independent side-by-side panels
A grid or flex layout may place two separate panels next to each other. That is not the same as flowing one text stream through columns. For PDF, establish the printable width, make sure both panels fit, and decide what should happen when either panel continues onto another page. Browser PDF documentation describes print media and page options, but does not guarantee identical results for every combination of layout rules.

Prepare the HTML and print CSS
Give the PDF a deliberate print layout instead of relying on the browser’s screen defaults. Add or adjust a print stylesheet and define the intended page dimensions and margins. CSS @page can set page size and margins; the PDF renderer may also expose corresponding options.

}Use the selector matching your real layout; the two examples are alternatives, not rules to apply simultaneously. Check that the column or panel widths fit within the page’s content area after margins are taken out. If content must break at a particular point, use appropriate print break rules and verify the result: multicolumn breaks and page breaks can interact in engine-specific ways.
Browser PDF APIs generally use print media by default, so styles inside @media print normally govern output. If the goal is specifically to reproduce the screen appearance, explicitly emulate screen media before creating the PDF. Do not switch media just because the print result differs: decide which appearance the document is supposed to have.
Convert with Playwright
Playwright’s page PDF operation uses print styling by default. Its PDF options include paper formats, margins, background printing, and an option to prefer the CSS page size. The following Node.js example assumes Playwright is installed in the project and the HTML is available locally.

})();Replace the file URL with an absolute path to your HTML file, or navigate to an appropriate HTTP or HTTPS URL. If the CSS @page size should control the paper dimensions, keep preferCSSPageSize enabled. Otherwise, choose the renderer’s paper format intentionally. Avoid assuming the default paper format or margins suit your document.
Using Puppeteer instead
Puppeteer also provides browser-based PDF generation, with print media as the default. A minimal equivalent is:

})();For either library, verify the option names and behavior against the version installed in your project. If you want screen styling rather than print styling, use that library’s screen-media emulation before calling its PDF method.
Other conversion paths
WeasyPrint
WeasyPrint is an HTML/CSS-to-PDF option when its paged-media features suit the document. Its documentation covers PDF hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments, forms, page rules, and simple multicolumn support. Review its documented limitations against your stylesheet, especially if the layout uses fixed heights, spanning content, complex breaks, or overflow-sensitive columns.

Browser print dialog
For a one-off conversion, open the page in a browser and use its print dialog to save as PDF. Check paper size, margins, scale, background graphics, and headers or footers before saving. Browser print settings change the output; browser-generated page-margin content can also appear when space permits, and Chrome’s print dialog can disable it.
Choose among these routes based on whether the page needs JavaScript or browser rendering, which CSS features it uses, whether print or screen media is desired, how precisely page size and backgrounds must be controlled, and whether pagination is acceptable. The available documentation does not establish a universal performance winner or a complete cross-engine compatibility matrix.
Inspect the generated PDF
Open the actual PDF at its intended paper size. A successful file creation does not prove the columns are readable or that the content fits.
- Check that text and panels fit within the printable width and are not clipped.
- Look for unexpected column widths, awkward gaps, overflow, and content that crosses a page or column boundary badly.
- Verify that fonts and images loaded before capture; a page that printed before those resources finished loading may look incomplete.
- Check page breaks, especially around long content, tables, fixed-height sections, and mixed column and page-break rules.
- Compare colors and backgrounds with the intended result; print defaults may alter colors unless color adjustment is configured and backgrounds are enabled in the renderer.
Chrome added support for generated content in page-margin boxes in version 131, announced October 30, 2024. That feature can be used for items such as page numbers in those margins, but do not depend on it in environments running older Chrome versions.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The PDF has one column or the wrong layout
Check whether the layout rules are inside @media print while the renderer is using print media. If the PDF should match the screen, enable screen emulation deliberately. Also confirm that the selected CSS targets the actual text container or panel wrapper rather than an unrelated parent.
Content is cut off or too wide
Recheck page size and margins, then calculate the space remaining for content. Two panels that fit in a wide browser window may not fit on the chosen paper. Reduce gaps or panel widths, select an appropriate page size, or revise the print layout; inspect again at the target size.
Columns or page breaks look awkward
Text columns and page fragmentation do not always combine cleanly. Simplify constrained-height or spanning layouts where possible, review break rules, and test with representative long content. If the design depends on complex multicolumn behavior, compare the output in the renderer you plan to use rather than assuming support transfers exactly from another engine.
Backgrounds or colors are missing
Enable background printing in the PDF options or print dialog. If exact colors are important, apply the documented color-adjust property and verify it in the output; color-adjust rules do not replace the renderer’s background-printing setting.

Fonts or images are absent
Make sure the page has finished loading required resources before calling the PDF operation. Confirm that local file references and remote resources are accessible in the environment running the browser, then regenerate and inspect the PDF.

Yes. With browser automation, navigate to the file using an absolute file URL such as file:///absolute/path/to/two-column.html, subject to the environment’s file-access rules.
Will the PDF have selectable text?
Browser and HTML-to-PDF workflows render a document to PDF, but the cited documentation does not establish text-selection behavior for every page or renderer configuration. Check the generated file for your use case.
