To convert SVG code to an image, rasterize the markup with a renderer. In a browser, create an Image from the SVG string, paint it onto a canvas with drawImage(), then export the canvas with toBlob(). For local or batch work, Inkscape, ImageMagick, and librsvg provide repeatable command-line conversions. Keep the SVG’s root dimensions explicit, choose PNG when you need transparency or crisp lines, and use JPEG only with an opaque background.
What conversion actually does
SVG is vector markup: paths, text, shapes, gradients, filters, and references are instructions rather than a fixed grid of pixels. An image file such as PNG or JPEG is raster data. Conversion therefore means asking a renderer to paint the SVG at a selected width and height. Until that step, the SVG remains resolution-independent; after it, enlarging the PNG cannot recreate detail that was never rasterized.
The output dimensions matter more than a nominal “DPI” setting for most web work. Give the root <svg> an explicit width, height, and sensible viewBox. A viewBox controls the SVG coordinate system; width and height give the renderer predictable output dimensions. If dimensions are missing, browsers and command-line tools may choose defaults or derive a size that does not match your layout.
Browser conversion: SVG string to a downloadable PNG
This method is suitable when your application already has the SVG code and the user needs an immediate download. The SVG is loaded as an image, drawn to a canvas, and exported as a Blob. toBlob() avoids the very large in-memory strings produced by data URLs.

Complete browser example
const svg = `<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="800" height="450" viewBox="0 0 800 450">
<rect width="800" height="450" fill="#172554"/>
<text x="40" y="90" fill="white" font-size="48">Hello SVG</text>
</svg>`;
const blob = new Blob([svg], { type: "image/svg+xml" });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const img = new Image();
img.onload = () => {
const canvas = document.createElement("canvas");
canvas.width = img.naturalWidth || 800;
canvas.height = img.naturalHeight || 450;
const context = canvas.getContext("2d");
if (!context) throw new Error("Canvas 2D context is unavailable");
context.drawImage(img, 0, 0);
canvas.toBlob((pngBlob) => {
if (!pngBlob) throw new Error("PNG export failed");
const downloadUrl = URL.createObjectURL(pngBlob);
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = downloadUrl;
link.download = "converted.png";
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(downloadUrl);
}, "image/png");
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
};
img.onerror = () => {
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
console.error("The SVG could not be rendered");
};
img.src = url;
The Blob and object URL keep the SVG in memory without putting markup in a URL. The naturalWidth and naturalHeight values come from the SVG’s declared dimensions. If you need a different pixel size, set canvas.width and canvas.height explicitly and draw into that size:
const targetWidth = 1600;
const targetHeight = 900;
canvas.width = targetWidth;
canvas.height = targetHeight;
context.drawImage(img, 0, 0, targetWidth, targetHeight);
Exporting JPEG or WebP
PNG is the practical default because it preserves transparency and sharp line art. JPEG is lossy and cannot represent transparency, so paint an opaque background before exporting. Browsers commonly support JPEG and WebP quality parameters.
context.fillStyle = "white";
context.fillRect(0, 0, canvas.width, canvas.height);
context.drawImage(img, 0, 0);
canvas.toBlob((file) => {
if (!file) throw new Error("JPEG export failed");
const url = URL.createObjectURL(file);
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = url;
link.download = "converted.jpg";
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
}, "image/jpeg", 0.9);
Replace image/jpeg with image/webp when WebP is accepted by the destination. The quality value is a request, not a guaranteed identical compression setting across browsers.
When a data URL is acceptable
For a small result, canvas.toDataURL("image/png") returns a data URL that can be assigned to an image’s src or copied into a link. For larger images, prefer toBlob() and an object URL: data URLs are long JavaScript strings and can increase memory use.
Browser limitations and security failures
Cross-origin images and a tainted canvas
If the SVG references an image, stylesheet, font, or other resource from an origin that does not permit your page to read it, the canvas can become tainted. Export then fails with a security error. Keep referenced assets same-origin, inline suitable assets as data URLs, or configure the remote server’s CORS response. Setting a random client-side flag does not bypass the browser’s origin policy.
External resources and scripts
SVG loaded as an image can have JavaScript disabled and external images or stylesheets blocked. Inline the styles and assets that must appear in the result. This also makes a conversion reproducible. Treat untrusted SVG as untrusted input: do not enable features that execute scripts or fetch arbitrary local data, and sanitize markup before rendering it in an application.

Rendering differences
Fonts, filters, CSS inheritance, remote references, and complex effects can render differently between browsers and desktop renderers. Test at the exact target dimensions and install or embed the fonts your design requires. If a logo or diagram must match a reference pixel-for-pixel, use one renderer consistently in production rather than comparing outputs from several engines.
Convert SVG files from the command line
Command-line tools are preferable for build pipelines, server jobs, and batches because the input, dimensions, and output format can be recorded and repeated.

Inkscape
Inkscape natively exports PNG. A basic conversion is:
inkscape --export-type=png --export-filename=output.png input.svg
For a fixed pixel width, add an explicit export width; use an explicit height when that is the dimension your layout controls. Inkscape can also stream PNG output to ImageMagick for JPEG conversion:
inkscape --export-type=png --export-filename=- input.svg | convert - output.jpg
This two-step path is useful because JPEG export needs a deliberate background and compression policy. Inkscape’s direct raster export remains the simplest choice for PNG.
ImageMagick
ImageMagick can render SVG and then apply resizing, compositing, and format conversion in one pipeline:

magick input.svg output.png
Its documented SVG resolution default is 96 dpi. Use explicit sizing when output pixels must be predictable. For JPEG, select an opaque background:
magick -background white input.svg output.jpg
For transparency in a format that supports it, use a transparent background:
magick -background none input.svg output.png
ImageMagick may use Inkscape when available, otherwise librsvg, and otherwise its internal renderer. That fallback chain can change the result, so pin the renderer and version in a reproducible build.
ImageMagick exposes parser controls for entity substitution, embedded SVG, and unusually large documents. Relaxing those guards can create security and resource risks; enable such options only for SVG you trust.

librsvg and rsvg-convert
rsvg-convert is a lightweight command-line wrapper around librsvg:
rsvg-convert --format=png --width=1600 --output=output.png input.svg
It can select output formats, scale to a specified width or height, and export a particular object by its SVG id. Parser limits protect against oversized documents and data URIs. Relax them only for trusted input and only when the job genuinely requires it.

Choosing PNG, JPEG, WebP, PDF, or SVG
| Format | Use it when | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Transparency, logos, diagrams, UI captures, or crisp edges matter. | Files can be larger than lossy formats. |
| JPEG | The destination requires JPEG and the image is photographic or has a solid background. | Lossy compression and no transparency; choose a background first. |
| WebP | Your destination supports modern web images and you want configurable compression. | Confirm compatibility with the consuming application. |
| You need a document or print-oriented deliverable rather than a pixel image. | PDF export is a separate document workflow; verify fonts, page size, and pagination. | |
| SVG | The consumer supports vectors and you want infinite scaling. | It is not a raster image and may expose markup or external-resource behavior. |
Batch conversion and predictable output
For a batch, place inputs in a controlled directory, choose one renderer, and pass dimensions explicitly. A shell loop using Inkscape might look like this:
mkdir -p png
for file in svg/*.svg; do
name=$(basename "$file" .svg)
inkscape --export-type=png --export-filename="png/$name.png" "$file"
done
For ImageMagick, keep background and size decisions in the command rather than relying on defaults. For librsvg, use the same --width or --height for every file. Check exit codes, log the input filename, and inspect a sample of outputs for clipped content, missing fonts, and unexpected transparency.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Canvas: decoding, painting, and exporting occur in the browser and consume the user’s memory. Large dimensions and data URLs increase the cost; use blobs and release object URLs.
- CLI rendering: is easier to retry and monitor. Limit concurrency so many large SVGs do not exhaust CPU or memory.
- External assets: add network latency and introduce availability and CORS failure modes. Inline or cache assets when licensing and security allow.
- Fonts: are a deployment dependency. A missing font can alter line wrapping and the final pixel dimensions.
- Validation: verify the output exists, has the expected dimensions and format, and is not a zero-byte or partially rendered file.
Common errors and fixes
“The canvas is tainted” or export throws a security error
Find every external image, stylesheet, font, or filter reference. Serve it with appropriate CORS headers, move it to the same origin, or inline it. Do not export untrusted cross-origin content by bypassing browser security.
The output is blank
Wait for the image’s onload event before drawing. Check that the SVG has a valid namespace, nonzero dimensions, and visible content. In command-line jobs, inspect stderr and try a minimal SVG to separate malformed markup from an unsupported feature.
Content is clipped or the aspect ratio is wrong
Set a matching viewBox, width, and height. If you resize the canvas, pass destination dimensions to drawImage() and decide whether preserving aspect ratio or filling the rectangle is more important.
Text or filters look different
Install or embed the required fonts, simplify unsupported filters, and compare the same SVG at the same pixel dimensions in the renderer you will use in production.

JPEG has an unwanted black or transparent-looking background
JPEG has no alpha channel. Paint a white or other intended background before drawImage(), or use ImageMagick’s -background option before writing the JPEG.
ImageMagick rejects a large or complex SVG
Its parser guards are working as safety limits. Reduce the document, use a renderer suited to the SVG features, or deliberately adjust limits only for trusted files in an isolated job.

FAQ
Can I convert SVG code without saving an SVG file first?
Yes. The browser Blob workflow accepts the string directly, and server-side renderers can read SVG markup from a generated temporary file or standard input, depending on the tool invocation.
Why does a vector SVG need a width and height?
The renderer needs a pixel target for raster output. A viewBox defines coordinates, while width and height establish the intended rendered size.
Is PNG always better than JPEG for SVG?
No. PNG is usually better for transparency and sharp graphics, but JPEG is appropriate when a destination requires it and the image can have a solid background.
