You can claim a digital license for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs by inserting the disc into a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. You must keep the qualifying disc, and not every game is eligible. Xbox Series S cannot read discs. As of October 4, 2026, the official materials cited below do not establish whether the feature is available to every player.
How do I convert my Xbox disc to digital?
For an eligible disc, use a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X console. Xbox’s announcement describes the claim method as inserting the supported disc and launching the game. Follow any claim prompt or license-receipt flow the console presents.
- Use a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X console.
- Insert the Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc you want to check.
- Launch the game and follow any claim prompt or successful license-receipt flow shown on the console.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The digital license remains conditioned on having it.
Xbox has not documented a universal menu path or published a complete title-by-title eligible list in the official materials cited here. If the console does not offer or complete a claim, do not assume the disc qualifies.
Can I convert a disc using Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is an all-digital console and cannot read physical game discs. To make a claim, you need access to a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X console. If you only have a Series S, borrowing access to a supported console may be more practical than buying another console for this limited purpose.

- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
Do I have to keep the disc after converting?
Yes. Microsoft’s usage rules say the digital license is conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from that disc, and Microsoft may require eligibility to be revalidated. If you no longer have the disc, access may be suspended or revoked. The original disc continues to work as before, according to Xbox; this is a license benefit attached to an eligible disc, not a way to turn it into an independent transferable digital purchase.
Which Xbox games are supported?
Eligibility is limited to supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs; it is not automatic for every disc, publisher, or franchise. Xbox described the initial catalog in 2026 as “thousands of titles,” but that phrase is not a complete list or evidence that a particular disc qualifies. Eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors, and Microsoft may add or remove eligible discs. Check the claim flow for the specific disc or current Xbox information rather than relying on the console generation alone.

What does the digital license include?
The license may provide Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits when the specific game supports those features. It does not guarantee that every eligible title supports either one. Nor does it include or change any peripheral, accessory, or other equipment the game requires; check the individual game’s requirements.

Is disc-to-digital available to everyone?
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, and said Xbox Insiders could begin testing it the following week, August 31. Microsoft’s usage rules describe the license terms, but the official materials cited here do not establish whether general-public availability had begun by October 4, 2026. Availability may therefore depend on the rollout and the specific disc; do not assume every player can claim every eligible title now.
