To convert a crude-oil price quoted in U.S. dollars per barrel, either multiply or divide by the exchange rate—depending on how that rate is quoted. If the rate is target-currency units per U.S. dollar, multiply. If it is U.S. dollars per one unit of the target currency, divide. Always identify the oil benchmark, barrel unit, exchange-rate direction and date; the result is a currency conversion, not a local delivered price.
Choose the right formula from the exchange-rate direction
Exchange rates can express either how many units of another currency one U.S. dollar buys, or how many U.S. dollars one unit of another currency buys. Those are reciprocal quotes, so the arithmetic differs.
- Target-currency units per U.S. dollar: multiply the dollar oil price by the rate. For example, if a rate is 0.88 euros per U.S. dollar, then $80 per barrel × 0.88 euros per dollar = €70.40 per barrel.
- U.S. dollars per target-currency unit: divide the dollar oil price by the rate. For example, the European Central Bank’s table for 30 September 2026 lists 1 euro = 1.1355 U.S. dollars. For a hypothetical oil quote of $80 per barrel, $80 ÷ 1.1355 dollars per euro = approximately €70.45 per barrel.
Writing the currency units into the equation makes the direction clear: dollars cancel, leaving the target currency per barrel. The ECB figure is a reference rate, not a transaction quote.

Keep the oil price and exchange rate comparable
State which oil price you are converting. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s spot-price table, for example, distinguishes WTI at Cushing from Brent for Europe and labels crude prices in dollars per barrel. Match the time periods as well. For a same-day comparison, use an oil price and exchange rate for the same date where available. A daily oil price converted with a monthly average exchange rate is not a same-day observation. EIA explains that its weekly, monthly and annual oil prices are calculated from daily closing spot prices using an unweighted average; label a period average as such rather than presenting it as a particular day’s price. Include the rate’s source, quote direction and date alongside the converted figure. Rates change, so an undated conversion cannot reliably be reproduced or compared.

Understand what a currency-converted oil quote tells you
Oil is generally priced in U.S. dollars, so the cost expressed in another currency reflects both the dollar benchmark price and the exchange rate. If the dollar strengthens against a buyer’s currency, an unchanged dollar price can translate into a higher price in that currency. EIA illustrated this interaction with a historical comparison: Brent rose 59% in U.S. dollars and 86% in euros from 1 June 2021, according to its 17 May 2022 article. Those figures describe that past period, not current market performance. EIA: Stronger U.S. dollar contributes to higher crude oil prices in international markets
A converted benchmark price does not include bank or payment-provider spreads, transaction fees, transport, taxes, quality differentials or other charges. For an actual purchase, compare the applicable payment or trade rate and fees; a reference conversion is useful for comparison but does not establish the amount a buyer will pay.

Use an official reference rate appropriately
The European Central Bank provides a currency converter and publishes euro foreign-exchange reference rates. The ECB says its reference rates are published for information and strongly discourages using them for transactions. Use one to make a transparent comparison, but use the rate and fees applicable to the transaction when estimating a payment. ECB euro foreign-exchange reference rates
