You can limit avoidable quality loss when converting an OGG file, but you cannot restore audio information already discarded by a lossy encode. First check which codec the OGG file contains—such as Vorbis or Opus—then choose the output your player or editing workflow needs. If the existing codec is supported by the destination, copying the stream avoids another encode; MP3 requires a new lossy encode, while WAV provides a decoded PCM working copy.

Before converting, identify the audio codec

OGG is a container, not a guarantee that the audio inside uses one particular codec. An OGG file may contain Vorbis, Opus, or another supported stream, so do not choose a conversion method based only on the .ogg extension. Use FFprobe to inspect it:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.ogg

Look for the audio stream and its codec in the output. The distinction matters because a container change can sometimes preserve the encoded audio, but a codec change requires decoding and encoding again.

Choose the conversion that matches your goal

Need Suitable approach Quality implication
Play the file in software that already supports its codec Keep the original OGG file. No conversion means no additional encoding loss.
Use the existing codec in a different container Try stream copy to a container that supports that codec and confirm the target application can play it. Copies the encoded stream without a decode/encode cycle; container and player compatibility still apply.
Meet a requirement for MP3 Encode a new MP3 with an available MP3 encoder. MP3 encoding is lossy; another encode can reduce quality.
Get an uncompressed working file for editing or analysis Decode to WAV/PCM, using the format settings required by the receiving application. WAV holds the decoded result; it does not recover information lost in the original encoding.

Convert OGG to MP3 with FFmpeg

For a new MP3, FFmpeg can use the LAME MP3 encoder and its variable-bitrate quality control:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

This creates a new lossy encoding. The example uses a VBR quality setting; it is not a universal promise of transparent sound or a best setting for every source, listener, or encoder build. The quality and file-size balance depends on the material and the encoder. Keep the original OGG so you can return to it rather than repeatedly converting a converted copy.

If FFmpeg cannot find the encoder

If the command reports that libmp3lame is unavailable, check the encoders included in your FFmpeg build:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

The sample format is an example, not a universal production requirement. Follow the receiving application’s specifications if it requires a particular sample rate, bit depth, or channel layout. Otherwise, avoid adding sample-rate or channel conversions without a concrete need: changing those settings does not restore information removed by the source’s lossy encoding.

WAV can be much larger than the compressed OGG because it stores decoded PCM audio. That larger size represents an uncompressed working format, not recovered detail or improved source quality.

Check the WAV size for long recordings

FFmpeg documents a 4 GB data-size limit for default plain RIFF WAV, which uses a 32-bit size field. For a long recording that may exceed that limit, check FFmpeg’s RF64 or other extended-WAV options and verify that the intended audio application supports the chosen variant. A file that one tool can write is not necessarily readable in every player or editor.

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.ext

Replace output.ext with a container that supports the detected codec. Stream copy passes the encoded audio through without decoding and re-encoding it; it cannot make an unsupported codec compatible with a container or player. Check the destination application’s format support, then test the resulting file there.

FFmpeg’s guidance is direct: “Since encoding tends to be computationally expensive and in most cases degrades the stream quality (i.e. it is lossy), you should only transcode when you need to and perform streamcopy otherwise.” See the FFmpeg documentation on stream copy and transcoding.

Keep the conversion practical

  • Start from the original. Avoid chaining conversions, especially converting one lossy format into another more than once.
  • Convert only to satisfy a real requirement. If the destination supports the original codec, retaining the source may avoid needless processing.
  • Match the receiving workflow. For WAV, use the required sample format, sample rate, and channel layout rather than making arbitrary changes.
  • Verify the result in its destination. Codec and container support vary between applications, and stream copy does not guarantee playback everywhere.
