For an eligible resident individual, the usual route is to ask an Indian bank to send a foreign-currency remittance under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) to the eligible foreign-currency account specified by a GIFT City institution. The sending bank converts INR to USD as part of the transfer. Before authorising it, confirm that your intended investment qualifies, get a written all-in quote, and check the destination account’s terms for unspent funds.
How the INR-to-USD transfer works
You generally do not convert cash through a separate GIFT City exchange step. You instruct your Indian bank to remit funds to the beneficiary account, declare the remittance purpose, and let the bank execute the currency conversion and transfer. ICICI Bank describes online banking, app, branch and SWIFT options for its resident-Indian GIFT City transfers; its workflow requests beneficiary, purpose and source-of-funds details (ICICI Bank’s wire-transfer instructions).
This route is for a resident individual sending money from India. FEMA residence, account type, remittance purpose and investment product affect what is permitted, so it should not be assumed to apply unchanged to NRIs, companies or every IFSC product. RBI search-result material describes IFSC remittances under LRS for permitted purposes, but confirm the current rules and your bank’s requirements directly with an authorised dealer (RBI LRS Master Directions; RBI notification on remittances to IFSCs under LRS).
Check eligibility and LRS capacity first
The banks reviewed describe an LRS ceiling of USD 250,000 per financial year for resident individuals, with ICICI specifying the limit per PAN. These are bank-published descriptions, not independent confirmation of the currently operative law; your available capacity depends on your circumstances and other remittances during the financial year. Confirm the applicable limit and purpose classification with your authorised dealer before proceeding.
#1 Best Overall
LRS is purpose-bound: the fact that an account or investment is in GIFT City does not make every investment eligible. Explain the exact intended financial service or investment to the bank and ask it to confirm that the remittance purpose is permitted. Bank of Baroda’s IFSC FAQ states that transactions undertaken by IFSC units should be in foreign currency other than INR (Bank of Baroda IFSC FAQs).
Steps to fund the account
- Ask your authorised dealer to confirm the route. Tell the bank that the beneficiary is an IFSC account in GIFT City and explain the exact purpose. Ask it to confirm LRS eligibility, your remaining annual capacity, the purpose classification and any declarations or supporting documents required.
- Verify the receiving account instructions. Confirm the beneficiary’s legal name, account number, bank and IFSC details, currency accepted, and whether the investment provider requires payment into a particular account. Do not rely on generic account details if the provider has issued transaction-specific instructions.
- Get an all-in quote for your transfer. Request the INR amount to be debited, the executable INR/USD rate and any markup, the expected USD credited, sending-bank charges, possible intermediary or correspondent-bank deductions, and the treatment of applicable taxes. Ask who pays intermediary charges and whether the quoted credited amount is guaranteed or only estimated. The available provider pages do not establish a live exchange rate or comparable fees.
- Submit the bank’s current forms and information. ICICI’s instructions list beneficiary name, account number, address, remittance purpose and source of funds, and describe authentication for its process. Requirements and available channels vary by bank. ICICI also mentions charge code “OUR” for certain transfer methods to avoid charges being deducted from the remitted amount; confirm its meaning, availability and cost for your particular route with the bank.
- Track settlement and apply the funds as intended. Keep the remittance advice and related records. Confirm with the receiving institution that the account was credited in the expected currency and amount, then follow its instructions for investing or otherwise using the funds.
Compare the actual cost, not a headline exchange rate
The amount of USD that arrives can differ from a market-rate calculation because the bank’s executable exchange rate, its markup, transfer fees and intermediary charges affect the result. The sources here do not establish a live INR/USD rate, a bank spread, a fee schedule, tax treatment or processing-time comparison. Ask each bank for a quote for the same INR amount on the same date, and compare the expected net USD credited as well as the INR debit.

Check the receiving account’s rules for unused funds
Idle-funds conditions are account-specific. ICICI and RBL each describe a 180-day repatriation condition for unspent or unutilised funds in their specified resident-Indian products. Do not assume that the same period or consequence applies to every GIFT City account. Ask the receiving bank or provider to confirm the rule for your account before remitting, especially if you may not invest the entire balance promptly (ICICI Bank; RBL Bank’s resident-Indian foreign-currency account).
Provider details are not interchangeable
Product features vary even among accounts marketed for resident Indians using LRS. For example, RBL says its named foreign-currency account accepts USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AED and AUD, and that fixed deposits are not allowed under that savings account. These are RBL product terms, not a description of all GIFT City accounts. Check the specific account’s accepted currencies, investment options and terms before choosing the beneficiary details for a transfer (RBL Bank account information).

For legal or tax consequences specific to your circumstances, obtain qualified advice; the bank transfer instructions alone do not determine your tax treatment.
