To convert an image online, keep a copy of the original, choose a converter that accepts your source file and desired output, upload or select the image, choose the output format, then download and check the result in the app or website where you plan to use it. Pick the format for the job: JPG for compact photos, PNG when you need transparency or data-rich graphics, WebP for web images, and SVG for genuine vector artwork. Conversion cannot restore detail already lost in a compressed source image.
Choose the right output format first
The best target format depends on what the image contains and where it will go. Before converting, check the destination’s accepted formats and whether it requires particular dimensions or file-size limits. A file that looks correct on your computer can still be rejected by a website or editor.

Google for Developers describes WebP as supporting both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Its documentation also reports native support in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. Browser support and your destination’s requirements can change, so confirm compatibility for the actual deployment rather than relying on a general format label.
Convert an image online step by step
- Save an untouched original. Keep the source file before you upload or edit it, particularly if the image is important or you may need another output later.
- Check the destination’s requirements. Confirm the accepted format, maximum file size, dimensions, and whether it needs transparency or animation. These requirements belong to the specific site or app, not to online converters as a whole.
- Choose a converter that supports both formats. Adobe Express documents JPG, PNG, and SVG conversion quick actions. CloudConvert lists a broader range, including PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, PSD, and multiple camera-raw formats.
- Select the source image and target format. Use the converter’s upload or file-selection control and choose the exact output format the destination requests. If the service offers quality, resolution, or output-size controls, adjust them only as needed; CloudConvert says its image converter provides these controls.
- Convert and download the result. Save the output somewhere distinct from the original so you do not accidentally overwrite your only source copy.
- Open and inspect the downloaded file. Check that it opens in the intended destination and that its appearance, dimensions, transparency, and animation meet your needs. Do not assume these properties were preserved just because the conversion completed.
Using Adobe Express or CloudConvert
For a straightforward JPG, PNG, or SVG conversion, Adobe Express is one documented option. Its accepted import formats and file limits are editor-specific: Adobe’s requirements page, updated February 9, 2026, lists AI, GIF, HEIC, JPEG/JPG, PNG, PSD/PSDT, SVG, and WebP. It states a desktop-web import limit of 80 MB for non-SVG files and 250 KB for SVG, a mobile-app import limit of 40 MB, and a maximum image resolution of 65 megapixels. These are Adobe Express limits, not universal limits for online conversion.

Adobe also warns that complex SVG elements—including text, images, gradients, and masks—may render with issues in Express. If fidelity matters, inspect the result rather than assuming the import and export will preserve every SVG detail.
For a less common source or target, CloudConvert’s listed format range may be more suitable. It also describes controls for resolution, quality, and file size. Check the service’s current interface for the formats and controls available for your particular conversion; a format being listed does not establish that every pair of source and output formats is supported.

What conversion can and cannot preserve
Converting between formats changes how image data is represented; it is not a way to recover image detail discarded earlier. A lossy JPEG converted to PNG can be stored in PNG format, but the lost source detail remains lost. Likewise, selecting SVG as an output does not by itself produce scalable vector paths from a raster photo. Where the tool offers quality settings, use a high-quality setting when visual fidelity matters, then inspect the file at its intended display size.
For transparency or animation, verify the property in the downloaded result and in the destination app. A filename extension alone is not proof that the expected content survived.

Confirm compatibility at the destination
Format support varies by editor, app, browser, and website. Google’s WebP documentation describes support in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, but production workflows still need validation in the environment that matters to you. Chrome for Developers’ cited AVIF page dates to May 2, 2019, so its support description is historical rather than a current compatibility matrix. When older browsers or unknown recipients are involved, consider providing a fallback format such as JPEG or PNG, as appropriate for the image.

The conversion workflows described by Adobe Express and CloudConvert involve selecting or uploading a file. The published information considered here does not establish their file-retention or deletion terms, nor does it establish that processing happens locally in your browser. For confidential images, check the service’s current privacy and technical documentation before upload, or use an offline conversion tool whose processing and retention behavior you can verify. Google’s WebP documentation identifies downloadable command-line tools such as cwebp as an offline-capable software option; check its current documentation for usage details.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems
- The converter rejects the file. Confirm that it accepts the source format and that the file meets its current size and resolution limits. Adobe Express, for example, has the import limits listed above; those limits do not apply to every converter.
- The destination rejects the output. Check that you chose the required format and that the downloaded file—not merely the source—meets the destination’s size and dimension requirements. If necessary, reconvert with different output dimensions or quality settings.
- The result looks softer or has artifacts. A lossy conversion can reduce image quality, and earlier lossy compression cannot be undone by converting to a lossless target. Keep the original and try a less aggressive quality setting or a target that suits the destination.
- Transparency is missing. Confirm the source actually contains transparency, choose a target that supports it, and inspect the downloaded result in an app that displays transparency correctly.
- An animated image becomes still. Check whether the selected input-to-output conversion preserves animation. If animation is required, use a compatible target and verify the downloaded file before replacing the original.
- An SVG looks different after import. Adobe warns that some complex SVG elements may have rendering issues in Express. Try simplifying the SVG or use a workflow that supports the elements your artwork depends on, then compare the output.
- The image is too large or slow to process. If the converter offers resolution, quality, or file-size controls, reduce output dimensions or adjust quality to meet the destination’s limits. Keep the original so you can retry with different settings.

- Keep the original file unchanged.
- Match the output format to the destination and image purpose.
- Use the converter’s available size, quality, or resolution controls deliberately.
- Open the output and verify its dimensions, appearance, transparency, and animation.
- For sensitive imagery, verify the service’s current privacy and retention terms before uploading.
