To preserve an HTML page’s layout in a PDF, first decide whether you want its on-screen appearance or a document designed for paper. Then use the matching CSS media mode, define page dimensions and margins, wait for fonts and dynamic content, and inspect the generated PDF for clipping and awkward page breaks. Browser PDF methods commonly use print styles by default, so screen layouts will not necessarily carry over unchanged.

Choose what “preserving layout” means

A responsive web page and a paginated PDF are different formats. A screen layout can be wide, scrollable, and designed to rearrange at different viewport sizes; a PDF must divide content into fixed-size pages. Decide which result you need before choosing CSS or renderer settings.

  • Keep the screen appearance: useful when the PDF should resemble a particular browser view. Use screen media deliberately, and check how the resulting canvas breaks across paper pages.
  • Create a readable document: usually the better choice for reports, articles, invoices, and printouts. Define print styles that fit the content to the intended page size, remove screen-only elements, and manage page breaks.

Prepare the page for printing

Set paper dimensions and margins

Use CSS @page to express the intended page size and margins. For example:

@page {
  size: A4;
  margin: 16mm;
}

@media print {
  nav,
  .screen-only,
  button {
    display: none !important;
  }

  h1, h2, h3 {
    break-after: avoid-page;
  }

  figure, table {
    break-inside: avoid-page;
  }
}

Replace A4 and the margin with the dimensions required by your audience or downstream workflow. The example hides navigation and controls and asks the browser to keep headings and selected blocks from splitting awkwardly; actual pagination still depends on content size and renderer support. Test long tables and large figures separately, since forcing an entire oversized element to remain together can itself create poor breaks.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Handle colors and backgrounds intentionally

Print rendering may alter colors, and Puppeteer does not print background graphics by default. If the design relies on background colors or images, enable background printing in the PDF options. Puppeteer and Playwright documentation point to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are desired, but verify the rendered PDF rather than assuming a CSS declaration alone guarantees color fidelity.

Wait for the content that belongs in the PDF

Before capture, ensure that required web fonts, images, and JavaScript-rendered content have finished loading. Lazy-loaded images may not appear if the page has not scrolled far enough to request them; applications that populate content asynchronously may need an explicit wait for a selector or other ready condition. Check the final page in the same runtime and viewport settings used for production.

Generate a PDF with Puppeteer

Puppeteer’s page.pdf() renders with print CSS media by default, as its Page.pdf API documentation states. The following Node.js example loads a page, waits for fonts, applies page settings, and writes a PDF.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
    await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);

    await page.pdf({
      path: 'page.pdf',
      format: 'A4',
      printBackground: true,
      preferCSSPageSize: true,
      margin: { top: '16mm', right: '16mm', bottom: '16mm', left: '16mm' }
    });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Replace the example URL and choose margins and paper dimensions for the document. networkidle0 can be unsuitable for pages with persistent network activity; if navigation never settles, wait for a page-specific ready selector or a bounded delay instead.

Understand the important PDF options

  • preferCSSPageSize defaults to false in the current Puppeteer PDF options reference. Set it to true when CSS @page dimensions should take priority over PDF format, width, or height. See Puppeteer PDFOptions.
  • printBackground defaults to false. Set it to true if backgrounds are part of the design; this is separate from page-size selection.
  • For a deliberate screen-style capture, emulate screen media before generating the PDF: await page.emulateMediaType('screen');. The result may be wider than paper and split in unexpected places, so inspect every page.
  • Choose either CSS page sizing or explicit PDF dimensions as the controlling source of page size; avoid assuming that conflicting settings will combine as intended.

Generate a PDF with Playwright

Playwright’s page.pdf() also uses print CSS media by default. This Node.js example follows the same print-oriented approach:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);

    await page.pdf({
      path: 'page.pdf',
      format: 'A4',
      printBackground: true,
      preferCSSPageSize: true,
      margin: { top: '16mm', right: '16mm', bottom: '16mm', left: '16mm' }
    });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Install with npm install playwright and install the browser binaries required by your environment. If the intended output is the screen design, call await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }); before page.pdf(). Consult the Playwright Page API for the current behavior and options. As with Puppeteer, screen media does not make a responsive page automatically paginate well.

  • Content is clipped or runs off the page: check fixed widths, overflow rules, and whether screen media was selected. Fit the print layout to the intended paper width.
  • Headings are stranded at the bottom: apply page-break rules such as break-after: avoid-page and review the content around the break.
  • Backgrounds are missing: enable printBackground in Puppeteer or Playwright.
  • The page size ignores CSS: in Puppeteer, set preferCSSPageSize: true when @page should control dimensions, and resolve any conflicting explicit format or size settings.
  • Fonts or images are absent: wait for fonts and image requests, and ensure dynamically populated content is ready before PDF generation.
  • Navigation or controls take up space: hide or restyle them in print CSS rather than relying on the screen layout.
  • Colors look different: account for print color adjustment, enable backgrounds if needed, and inspect the saved PDF in the target viewer or print workflow.
  • Navigation never completes: persistent connections can prevent network-idle conditions. Wait for a page-specific ready signal or use an intentional timeout with a readiness check.

A 2015 HP-sponsored tutorial showed one Wired article changing from 18 pages under default browser printing to two after removing irrelevant material and styling the remainder. That is an illustration for one page, not a general compression result. See the Print Developers Community tutorial.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API that can also return PDFs. One GET request can capture a page as a PDF; its PDF options include paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. The API also supports custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting for a selector or network idle, and full-page capture.

For a PDF capture, adapt the request to the required PDF parameters and settings in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Basic request example:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com
  -o page.pdf

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
