Convert a webpage to PDF in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s print workflow is the simplest way to turn ordinary HTML pages and web-app documents into a PDF on Windows 10. It prints the rendered page rather than exposing the underlying HTML source, so what you see in the preview is what you should expect in the saved file.
- Open the HTML content in Edge. This can be a public webpage, a local
.htmlfile, or a web application document. - Open printing. Press Ctrl+P. You can also open the Edge menu and choose Print, or right-click the page and choose Print.
- Inspect the preview before saving. Scroll through long documents and check page breaks, clipped columns, images, and blank pages.
- Set the layout options you need. Depending on the Edge version and available printer settings, adjust paper size, orientation, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics. Microsoft documents scale choices such as fitting content to the printable area, actual size, and a custom percentage.
- Select a PDF destination. Choose the PDF option shown in the Printer or Destination list, then select Print or Save.
- Name the file and choose a folder. Confirm the location, save, and open the resulting PDF to verify it.
Make the preview match the page
Websites often use CSS that is optimized for a screen, not paper. If colors, panels, or charts disappear, enable Background graphics in the print settings. If text runs off the right edge, try a smaller scale or landscape orientation. If the result is too small to read, use a larger scale and accept additional pages.
Headers and footers can add the page title, URL, date, or page numbers. Turn them off for a clean document or on when the source and capture date matter. Always judge the preview rather than assuming the browser will paginate a responsive layout exactly as it appears on screen.

Print only selected HTML
To convert just part of a page, select the required text or images first. Right-click the selection and use the context-menu print command when it is available. The preview should show the selected material instead of the entire page. This is useful for an article section, table, or invoice embedded in a larger application.
Use Immersive Reader for a cleaner article
For supported websites, Edge’s Immersive Reader can remove surrounding navigation, advertising, and other page furniture before printing. Open the page in Immersive Reader, then start the normal Ctrl+P workflow. Availability depends on the website, and complex web applications may not support it.
Save HTML as PDF with Firefox
Firefox is a practical alternative when Edge’s preview or destination list is unavailable.

- Open the webpage or HTML file in Firefox.
- Open the page’s print workflow from the browser menu or with Ctrl+P.
- Review the print preview and adjust the available page settings.
- In the destination drop-down, choose Save to PDF.
- Choose a filename and folder, then save the document.
Open the saved file afterward. Check that links, images, page breaks, and any required background colors are present; a browser can render the same CSS differently from another browser.
Use Microsoft Print to PDF as a Windows fallback
If neither browser offers a usable PDF destination, the Windows system print dialog may list Microsoft Print to PDF. A Microsoft Q&A community answer posted January 12, 2021 describes selecting that printer, choosing Print, and then supplying a filename and location. Treat this as a fallback description rather than a promise that every current Edge screen has the same labels.
- Start printing from the browser or application.
- Open the system print dialog if the browser provides a Print using system dialog option.
- Select Microsoft Print to PDF from the printer list.
- Choose Print, select the destination folder, enter a filename, and save.
If the printer is missing, Windows may have the optional feature disabled or the print subsystem may need repair. Use the browser’s own Save to PDF destination if it is available; otherwise repair the Windows printer feature before retrying.

There is no documented controlled comparison establishing that one method always produces better fidelity, speed, or PDF quality. For an important document, compare the preview and inspect the saved file for the content that matters to you.
Troubleshoot missing content, bad pagination, or a failed preview
The PDF is missing colors, images, or panels
- Return to the preview and enable Background graphics.
- Confirm that the images have finished loading before opening print.
- Try the other browser; Edge and Firefox may apply different print CSS rules.
- If the page contains ads or navigation you do not want, try Immersive Reader when the site supports it.
Text is cut off or too small
- Use Fit to printable area or reduce the custom scale slightly to prevent clipping.
- Switch to landscape for wide tables and dashboards.
- Use a larger scale when readability is more important than page count.
- Check every page of a long document; a single bad page break can hide a row or heading.
Blank pages or unexpected page breaks appear
- Inspect the preview for an oversized element, wide table, or CSS page-break rule.
- Try a different scale, orientation, or paper size.
- Reload the page and wait for late-loading content before printing again.
- For a web application, print a smaller section or use its own export command if one is provided.
Edge’s print preview will not open
Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying the print action and restarting Edge. Close other Edge windows, reopen the page, and press Ctrl+P again. If the preview still fails, try Firefox or the Windows system print dialog. A missing built-in PDF viewer can also be involved in preview-failure scenarios.

- Look for a Print using system dialog option and check the Windows printer list.
- Restart Edge and Windows, then retry.
- Use Firefox’s Save to PDF destination if you need the file immediately.
- If Microsoft Print to PDF is absent from Windows, repair or re-enable that optional printer feature through Windows settings or system administration tools.
The file saves but will not open
- Confirm that the saved filename ends in
.pdfand that the save operation completed. - Try opening it in another PDF reader or browser to rule out a viewer-specific problem.
- Print the page again after restarting the browser if the file is zero bytes or visibly incomplete.

Checks to perform before sharing a PDF
- Open the file and confirm the first and last pages are present.
- Check tables, code blocks, charts, and images at normal zoom.
- Verify that page numbers, headers, footers, and the source URL are included or removed as intended.
- Search the PDF for a distinctive heading to make sure text is selectable when that matters.
- For sensitive pages, check that private content was not loaded from another account or left in a browser header or footer.

Can I convert a local HTML file on Windows 10?
Yes. Open the file in Edge or Firefox, then use the same print-preview workflow. Relative images, fonts, and styles must be available at the paths referenced by the local document.

Does printing create a PDF of the page source code?
No. Browser printing captures the page as rendered. It does not preserve the original HTML, CSS, scripts, or server-side data as editable source.
Why does a PDF contain fewer pages than the browser view?
Print CSS, scale, paper size, and hidden screen-only elements can change pagination. Use the preview and adjust those settings before saving.
Can I preserve clickable links?
Many browser PDF workflows retain hyperlinks, but the result depends on the browser and page. Test a link in the saved file when link behavior is important.
