The simplest way to convert HTML to JPG on a Mac is to open the page in Chrome or Safari, save it as a PDF, then export the PDF page as a JPEG in Preview. For repeatable or batch screenshots, use Chrome’s headless command-line mode. Convert HTML to JPG with a browser and Preview
This method works for a local HTML file or a webpage you can open in a browser. The browser renders the HTML first; Preview then rasterizes the resulting PDF page as a JPEG. It uses tools already available on a Mac and avoids command-line setup.
1. Open and check the page
- Open the HTML file in Safari or Chrome. For a local file, open it from Finder or use the browser’s Open File command. For a website, navigate to its URL.
- Wait for the page to finish rendering. Check that images, fonts, and other visible elements have loaded, and scroll through the page if you need to inspect content below the fold.
- Decide whether you need the whole page or just what fits on a printed page. A long page can be split across multiple pages when printed to PDF.
2. Save a PDF from Chrome
- In Chrome, choose File > Print, or press Command-P.
- In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF as the destination.
- Review the print preview. Choose the page range and other available print settings you need, then save the PDF somewhere easy to find, such as the Desktop.
Google’s Chrome Help documents Command-P and the Save as PDF destination on Mac. The PDF is an intermediate file: it is not yet a JPG.
3. Export the PDF page as JPEG in Preview
- Open the saved PDF in Preview. If another app opens it, Control-click the file in Finder, choose Open With, then select Preview.
- If the PDF contains several pages, show the thumbnail sidebar and select the page you want to convert. Exporting a selected page produces an image of that page, not a single continuous image of every page.
- Choose File > Export. In the format menu, select JPEG.
- Choose a filename and location, adjust the available quality setting if desired, and save.
Open the saved image to check it before sharing. Preview’s Export command supports JPEG, and Apple also documents extracting PDF pages as images. Menu wording and layout can differ slightly between versions, but the operation is to export the rendered PDF page in JPEG format.

Use Safari, or convert a local HTML file
Safari can display the HTML, but its documented Save As formats are Web Archive and Page Source—not JPG. Saving a page in either of those formats preserves a webpage or its source; it does not make a JPEG image. To get a JPG, use a browser’s print-to-PDF route and then export the PDF in Preview.
For a local HTML file, open that file in Safari or Chrome and follow the same browser-to-PDF-to-Preview steps. The browser captures the page as it renders on your Mac; it does not convert the source code itself into a picture. CSS, loaded fonts, JavaScript, and images can all affect the rendered result.

Choose the right method for the page
- One page or occasional conversion: Use the PDF-to-Preview workflow. It is the most direct route when you do not need automation.
- A specific page from a long document: Save a PDF, then select the needed page thumbnail in Preview before exporting.
- A long webpage that must fit in one image: A printed PDF may split the content across pages. Use a controlled screenshot workflow instead, and check the resulting image for clipped or missing content.
- Repeated or batch captures: Headless Chrome provides command-line controls for screenshot capture, viewport size, and a delay before capture.
- A JPG specifically: Make JPEG the final export format in Preview. A browser screenshot may instead be a PNG, which Preview can export as JPEG.
Automate a screenshot with headless Chrome
Chrome’s headless command-line reference documents --screenshot, --window-size, and --timeout. These controls are useful when you need repeatable dimensions or want to capture more than one URL. The example below captures a webpage at a 1200-by-1600 viewport and waits 5,000 milliseconds before the capture:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1200,1600 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/Run the command in Terminal with Chrome’s command-line executable available as chrome. The screenshot is written to the current working directory. If the file is PNG, open it in Preview and choose File > Export, then select JPEG. Replace the example URL with the page you need, and change the viewport dimensions or timeout to suit the page.

A fixed delay can help a page finish loading, but it is not a guarantee that every dynamic element is ready. Pages that load content after interaction, rely on animations, or fetch images lazily may need additional handling. Inspect the capture rather than assuming that a successful command means the image is complete.
What affects the result
Page length and layout
Print-to-PDF follows print layout behavior. A tall page can become multiple PDF pages, and page breaks may divide content in ways that differ from the on-screen layout. If you export one thumbnail, you get that page only. A headless screenshot instead captures the configured viewport; the example’s window size is 1200 by 1600 pixels, not a promise that every page will fit into those dimensions.

Loading, fonts, and dynamic content
Images, fonts, and content loaded by scripts may appear late or fail to load. Safari notes that some webpages may prevent saving items that appear on the page. A delayed capture can help with slow-loading content, but a fixed wait does not address every page’s behavior. Fonts and layout can also differ if the page’s dependencies are unavailable or the browser renders them differently.
Image quality and file type
A JPG is a raster image of the rendered page, so its text is no longer selectable as HTML text. JPEG compression can make small text or sharp edges look less crisp, particularly at low quality settings. If the appearance matters, inspect the exported image at its intended display size and adjust the quality setting or capture dimensions before sharing.

Troubleshooting HTML-to-JPG conversion
- The saved file is a PDF, not a JPG: PDF is the intermediate output. Open it in Preview and use File > Export, choosing JPEG in the format menu.
- The JPG contains only part of a long page: Check whether the PDF has multiple pages and export each required page, or use a controlled screenshot workflow if you need one image.
- Images or text are missing: Return to the browser and wait for the page to render before printing or capturing. Some pages prevent saving certain items; check the page in the browser and inspect the output.
- The capture is blank or incomplete: Confirm that the URL opens correctly in the browser, then try a longer headless Chrome timeout for slow content. A timeout cannot fix a page that requires an action or a resource that never loads.
- The layout differs from the browser window: Print layout and screen layout are not always the same. Review the PDF preview before saving, or use headless screenshot dimensions when screen-sized output is more important than print pagination.
- The JPG looks blurry: Export at a suitable quality and use a larger screenshot viewport when appropriate. Check the image at its actual use size; enlarging a small capture later cannot restore detail.

Can a JPG keep the text selectable?
No. A JPG is an image of the rendered page, not the original HTML text. Keep the HTML or PDF if you need selectable text.
Can a JPG have a transparent background?
No. JPEG does not support transparency. Choose a format such as PNG when transparent pixels are required.
