For a local HTML file, the most direct, repeatable way to create a Word document is Pandoc:
pandoc -f html input.html -o output.docx
Replace input.html with your source file and output.docx with the destination you want. Pandoc can also infer the input and output formats from those extensions, so pandoc input.html -o output.docx is sufficient. The conversion preserves document structure where it can, but it is not a pixel-for-pixel copy; inspect the resulting DOCX, particularly its tables and layout.
Choose the right way to convert
The best workflow depends on whether you value repeatability, convenience, or integration into an existing Python project. Pandoc is the strongest documented general-purpose route for a local file: it supports HTML input and DOCX output, can run from a command line, and accepts a Word reference document to control styles and page properties. A browser-based Pandoc interface is another option if you prefer a graphical workflow. For Python, distinguish a converter built for HTML-to-DOCX from python-docx, which is documented as a library for creating and updating DOCX files rather than a turnkey HTML converter.
| Situation | Route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A local file, repeatable processing, or a preference not to upload the source | Pandoc command line | Run the conversion on your machine and review the output for formatting changes. |
| You prefer a graphical browser interface | Pandoc browser app | The app lists HTML and DOCX support and provides a reference-document upload control. Review its current data-handling terms before uploading confidential content. |
| A Python project needs HTML-to-DOCX conversion | Pandoc or an HTML-to-DOCX-specific library such as html2docx | Choose a converter designed for the source and destination formats. python-docx alone is not documented as an HTML conversion tool. |
The practical decision points are how much setup is acceptable, whether you need repeatable automation, how much control you need over Word styling, and how sensitive the HTML is. No comparative fidelity or speed measurements are established for these routes, so choose based on workflow rather than assumed performance differences.

Convert a local HTML file with Pandoc
1. Prepare the input and destination
Save the source as an HTML file, such as input.html, and decide where the generated document should go. Keep the input and output paths distinct; using a DOCX filename for the output makes the intended format explicit. If your filenames contain spaces, quote the paths in the command.
2. Run the conversion
pandoc -f html input.html -o output.docx
The -f html option identifies the input format, and -o output.docx names the output file. If Pandoc is available on your command line, this asks it to read the HTML and write a DOCX. The shorter form relies on the filename extensions for format inference:
pandoc input.html -o output.docx
Use the explicit -f html form when you want the command to state the source format directly. Either way, confirm that output.docx was created and open it in a DOCX-compatible word processor to inspect it.
3. Check the result in Word or another DOCX-compatible editor
Do not judge success solely by whether a file exists. Compare its content and structure with the source: headings, paragraphs, lists, links, tables, and page breaks may matter differently depending on your document. Pay particular attention to complex tables, page layout, and visual styling. Pandoc converts through an intermediate document representation; that representation cannot express every detail of every input and output format, so some changes are expected.

Apply Word styles and page settings with a reference DOCX
If you need consistent Word styles or page properties, pass a reference DOCX:
pandoc -f html input.html -o output.docx --reference-doc=styles.docx
Here, styles.docx is a Word document whose styles and document properties Pandoc can use in the generated file. The relevant properties include margins, page size, headers, and footers. This is useful when the default output does not match your organization’s document conventions or when you convert multiple files that should share a Word design.
The reference file is not a promise that every source detail will be reproduced. It supplies Word-side styles and properties; it does not remove the limitations of converting between formats with different capabilities. After conversion, confirm that the content fits the chosen page size and margins, and check headers, footers, and tables in the actual output.
Build a reference file by editing Pandoc’s default
Pandoc’s manual recommends making a reference DOCX from its default reference file and modifying the styles you need, rather than changing unrelated parts of the template. This gives you a controlled starting point for Word styles and document properties. Keep the reference document available alongside your conversion workflow, and use the same file for later conversions that should share its settings.

Automate a conversion from Python
If Pandoc is installed and callable in the environment where your Python program runs, Python’s standard library can invoke the same command. This example converts one named HTML file and reports the output path if the command succeeds:
from pathlib import Path
import subprocess
source = Path("input.html")
destination = Path("output.docx")
if not source.is_file():
raise FileNotFoundError(f"HTML input not found: {source}")
subprocess.run(
["pandoc", "-f", "html", str(source), "-o", str(destination)],
check=True,
)
print(f"Created {destination}")
This wrapper uses the same Pandoc conversion as the shell command. check=True makes Python raise an error if the command exits unsuccessfully, instead of silently treating a failed conversion as complete. For a reference DOCX, add "--reference-doc=styles.docx" to the argument list. Make sure the reference file is available at the path you supply.
Another option is an HTML-to-DOCX-specific project such as html2docx, which describes itself as a converter and lists python-docx and BeautifulSoup among its dependencies. The project description alone does not establish a particular API call or guarantee that it supports every HTML feature you use, so check its current documentation before choosing it. Do not assume that installing python-docx by itself provides HTML-to-DOCX conversion; its documented purpose is creating and updating DOCX files.
Understand formatting and conversion limits
HTML and DOCX represent documents differently. Pandoc translates through an intermediate representation that aims to preserve document structure, but that representation is less expressive than all the formats it connects. Consequently, conversion can be lossy, and perfect conversion should not be expected for every source file.

- Structure: Review whether the document’s sections and content appear in the intended order.
- Tables: Inspect complex tables closely; Pandoc’s simpler document model may not accommodate every table detail.
- Page layout: Check page size, margins, headers, and footers, especially if you used a reference DOCX.
- Styling: Inspect the resulting Word styles and visual presentation rather than assuming source formatting carried over exactly.
John MacFarlane, author of the Pandoc User’s Guide, puts the underlying limitation plainly: “Because pandoc’s intermediate representation of a document is less expressive than many of the formats it converts between, one should not expect perfect conversions between every format and every other.” Treat the output as a converted document to review, not a visual duplicate of the HTML.

The command is not found
If your terminal or Python process cannot start pandoc, the command is not available in that environment. Install or make Pandoc available there, then retry. If the command works in a terminal but not in a Python script, check that both are using an environment where the Pandoc executable can be found.
The source file cannot be opened
Check that the filename is correct, that the file exists at the path used by the command, and that your current working directory is what you expect. For paths containing spaces, put the complete path in quotes in a shell command; in the Python example, pass the path as a separate argument as shown.
No DOCX appears where expected
Check the output path supplied after -o. A relative path is interpreted from the command’s working directory, not necessarily from the directory containing the HTML file. Use a clear destination path and confirm that the command completed successfully before opening the result.

The document opens but looks different
This is a conversion-fidelity issue, not necessarily a failed conversion. Inspect tables, styling, and page layout in the DOCX. If you need consistent styles or page properties, use a reference DOCX; if a particular element still changes, adjust the Word output and verify the correction in the final document.
A Python conversion fails
Read the command error and check the input path, output path, and Pandoc availability in the Python process’s environment. With check=True, a non-successful Pandoc run raises an exception, which helps distinguish a failed command from a successful conversion. If you selected an HTML-to-DOCX-specific library instead, consult that project’s current usage documentation rather than assuming its interface matches python-docx.
You are considering an online converter for confidential HTML
The Pandoc browser app lists HTML and DOCX support and offers a reference-document upload control, but its data-handling suitability for confidential files is not established here. Review its current privacy and data-handling terms before uploading sensitive material. A local command-line workflow avoids using that browser upload route.
