To turn a rendered web page into an image with Python, open it in Chrome through Selenium and save a screenshot. For the visible browser window, use driver.save_screenshot("page.png"); for just one component, locate its element and use the element screenshot method. Selenium’s documented WebDriver screenshots are PNGs of the current window, not automatically full-page captures.
Set up Selenium and Chrome
Install Selenium for the Python environment that will run your script:
python -m pip install seleniumSelenium’s Chrome documentation shows creating a session with webdriver.Chrome(). Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and later, and Selenium says the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions should match. See Selenium’s Chrome-specific WebDriver guidance for current setup details and options.
Save the current browser window as a PNG
This complete example opens a URL, saves the visible Chrome window to page.png, checks the save result, and closes the browser even if navigation or saving raises an error:

driver.quit()Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. The destination directory must be writable. Selenium documents save_screenshot(filename) as saving the current window as PNG and returning a Boolean; get_screenshot_as_file(filename) is another file-saving method. Use a .png extension. The Selenium Python WebDriver API reference describes these methods.
Choose the right screenshot output
Save an image file
Use save_screenshot("page.png") when the result should be a PNG file in the script’s filesystem. Check its Boolean return value if you want to catch a file-writing failure explicitly.
Keep PNG bytes in memory
Use get_screenshot_as_png() when another part of your Python program will process or store the image data:

png_bytes = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()Get base64-encoded image data
Use get_screenshot_as_base64() when the receiving code expects a base64 representation rather than raw bytes:
png_base64 = driver.get_screenshot_as_base64()Both alternatives capture the current window; they do not change the screenshot’s scope.
Capture one element instead of the window
If the target is a card, chart, or other component, locate its WebElement and use the element screenshot API rather than capturing the whole viewport. For example:

Understand viewport and full-page capture
A WebDriver window screenshot represents the current browser window, so content outside the visible viewport is not guaranteed to appear in the output. If you need an entire long document, treat full-page capture as a separate requirement: choose a method that suits your local or remote WebDriver setup, and verify the output on pages with below-the-fold or dynamically loaded content. Selenium issue discussion documents workaround-specific handling in some remote-WebDriver contexts, but does not establish one universally supported full-page API; see SeleniumHQ issue #11483.

Chrome session will not start
Check that Chrome is installed and that the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match. Selenium’s Chrome guidance says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and later; consult the setup documentation linked above if the installed browser or driver is not being detected.
The screenshot file is missing or empty
Confirm that the process can write to the destination directory and that the filename ends in .png. Check the return value from save_screenshot(); Selenium documents False when an I/O error prevents saving.

The image shows only part of the page
The standard WebDriver screenshot is of the current window. Scroll position and viewport therefore matter. For a full document, select and test a full-page approach suited to your execution context rather than assuming the current-window method captures everything.
The desired element cannot be found
Verify that the selector matches an element on the page after navigation. A wrong selector cannot identify the target component, so inspect the page’s markup and use a selector specific to the element you intend to capture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium convert an HTML string directly to an image?
The documented screenshot methods capture a page rendered in a browser. They do not describe converting arbitrary HTML source without browser rendering.
