Choose the right input workflow
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF API accepts a website URL or an HTML file. The workflow differs depending on where your content lives:
- Public or authenticated webpage: use the dedicated
capture-websiteoperation. This captures a URL directly. - HTML already assembled by your application: use the HTML-file input path described on CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF API page, or construct the appropriate import and conversion tasks. Check the live operation reference or Job Builder for the exact payload expected by your chosen input method.
CloudConvert describes its HTML-to-PDF rendering as Chrome-based and lists page size, margins, zoom, headers, and footers among its options. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent guarantee that every site or document will render identically. Test representative content before relying on the output.
Set up API authentication
- Create an API key in your CloudConvert account and restrict it to the scopes your integration needs.
- Send the key in the HTTP
Authorizationheader asBearer API_KEY. Keep the key on your server; do not expose it in browser-side code. - For job creation, the key needs the
task.writescope. To retrieve task status, it needstask.read. Confirm scopes against the current Getting Started documentation and Tasks reference.
Capture a webpage URL as a PDF
The following cURL request follows CloudConvert’s documented synchronous website-capture example. It submits a job to the synchronous host and asks for a redirect to the generated result. The example uses screen media; choose a different rendering mode or page options only after checking the current supported fields and values.

What the job does

The page’s print styles may produce a different layout, so select the media type that matches your intended document.export/urlmakes the resulting file available through a URL-based retrieval route.redirect: trueis part of the synchronous example. It is not a substitute for asynchronous completion handling in jobs that can queue or exceed client timeouts.
Use an asynchronous job for production workflows
CloudConvert jobs are asynchronous by default. A normal job-creation response can report processing; the application should wait for completion through a webhook or status retrieval/polling, then consume the completed export task’s result. CloudConvert notes that jobs can queue and network clients can time out, so avoid holding a connection open while a long job runs.

- Submit the job to the standard asynchronous jobs endpoint with the required tasks.
- Record the returned job or task identifier in your application.
- Wait for a completion webhook or check job/task status using the API.
- When the export task is complete, retrieve its result using the URL or storage route you configured.

Choose an export destination
The export/url task is suitable when your application can retrieve the output from a temporary downloadable URL. If the file should land directly in object storage, use the corresponding provider-specific export operation. CloudConvert’s Quickstart Guide recommends provider-specific import and export tasks for storage such as S3, Azure, Google Cloud, or OpenStack.

For a generic conversion job, the documented pattern is an import task, a convert task with output_format set to pdf, and an export task. The exact import operation depends on where the HTML file is stored and which input operation supports it. CloudConvert says its HTML-to-PDF API uses the latest Chrome browser and supports rendering options including page size, margins, zoom, headers, and footers. Treat this as a product description, not proof that every site will render as expected. Test pages that depend on scripts, custom fonts, protected resources, long content, or print styles. Compare the output with the intended result and adjust only the relevant capture and page settings.

For a webpage, decide deliberately between screen and print CSS. CloudConvert’s example sets css_media_type to screen; a page with dedicated print styles may need a different choice. Confirm current option names and accepted values in the capture operation documentation.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Unauthorized or forbidden response: verify the Bearer token, that the key is active, and that it has
task.writefor job creation ortask.readfor status requests. - The request times out: the job may be queued or take longer than the client connection allows. Submit asynchronously and use a webhook or status retrieval instead of waiting on one request.
- The job is still processing: job creation is not the same as completion. Keep the returned identifier and continue checking status or wait for a webhook before fetching the export.
- No downloadable output is available: confirm the export task is connected to the capture or conversion task and has completed. Use
export/urlfor URL retrieval or configure the appropriate storage export. - The PDF layout differs from the page: check screen versus print media, page size, margins, zoom, and whether scripts, fonts, or protected resources load. Reproduce the issue with representative content and consult the current operation options.
- HTML-file input is rejected: URL capture and HTML-file conversion are different input routes. Confirm the exact file-import or dedicated HTML-file payload in the current documentation rather than assuming the website-capture URL schema accepts a local file.
Cost and reliability considerations
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF API page displayed a starting price of $0.008 per file when accessed on October 3, 2026. This is a volatile starting price, not a workload quote; confirm current plan conditions and total cost on the product page. For reliability, treat rendering as an external job: handle pending work, completion, and failures explicitly; set client timeouts appropriate to job submission rather than PDF generation; and test the pages and assets your application actually depends on.
