For a one-time conversion, open the rendered HTML in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, choose Print, and save it as a PDF. If you need to paste raw HTML into a website, use an online converter that explicitly accepts HTML markup; if you need a repeatable workflow, use a documented API. The right choice depends on whether your HTML is already a page, whether it relies on scripts or external assets, and how sensitive its contents are.
Choose the right way to convert HTML to PDF
“HTML code” can mean a saved web page, a local .html file, a public URL, or a fragment of markup copied from an editor. Those inputs are not interchangeable: browser printing works with a rendered page, while a paste-in converter or API must explicitly accept raw HTML.

A free-to-use browser print feature is different from an online service’s free quota or trial. Check the converter’s current terms and account requirements before relying on an allowance.
Save a rendered page or local HTML file as a PDF
Browser printing is the quickest free option for a single page. It prints what the browser has rendered; it does not ask you to paste source code into a converter.

- Open the page. For a website, open its URL in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. For a local file, open the .html file in one of those browsers. Check that expected text, images, and interactive content have appeared before printing.
- Open Print. Use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac. Chrome also documents the menu route as File > Print. Google’s instructions: Chrome Help: Print from Chrome.
- Choose the PDF destination. In Chrome, choose Save as PDF when it is offered in the print window. Firefox offers Save to PDF in print preview; its guidance is at Mozilla Support: How to print web pages in Firefox. Edge’s print interface also provides a PDF destination; available destination wording can vary by operating system and browser version.
- Set the page layout. Choose A4 or Letter, portrait or landscape, margins, scale, and page range as appropriate. Preview the page breaks and make sure text is not clipped or reduced until unreadable.
- Check backgrounds and headers. If colored sections or background images are missing, turn on Background graphics in the print settings. Edge documents background graphics, headers and footers, and scale controls in its guide: Microsoft Support: Print in Microsoft Edge. Turn off browser headers and footers if their URL, title, or date would make the document look cluttered.
- Preview every page, then save. Confirm the first and last pages, page breaks, and any wide tables or code. Choose Save and select the destination folder.
What browser printing can and cannot convert
Printing operates on the rendered page, not on the raw source text as an editable document. If you open a file containing HTML tags in a text editor and print that editor, you will get the tags as text. Open the .html file in a browser to render it first. Likewise, a URL that requires a sign-in may print only what the current browser session can access; do not assume an online converter can access the same private page.
Paste HTML into an online converter
If you have markup in an editor and do not want to create and open a local file, choose an online tool whose interface explicitly accepts pasted HTML. HTML2PDF.app advertises a browser converter for a URL or raw HTML. Its documentation describes API conversion from raw HTML markup or a publicly reachable URL, and says conversions run in headless Chromium. HTMLPDF.dev advertises an online playground where you can paste HTML, choose paper settings, and download a PDF. Its API documentation says a request accepts either url or html, not both, and lists paper and layout options such as A4, Letter, orientation, and margins. - Open the converter’s own playground or browser interface.
- Paste the HTML markup into its HTML field. If you have a page URL instead, use its URL field rather than pasting a URL into the markup field.
- Set page size, orientation, and margins if the interface offers them.
- Generate the PDF and inspect the result, especially external images, fonts, and script-generated content.
- Read the service’s privacy and retention terms before submitting confidential or personal information.
Online playgrounds and free access can change. Confirm that the current interface accepts your type of input and check for account requirements, limits, or paid features before uploading important work.
Automate HTML-to-PDF conversion with an API
For repeated conversions or integration into an application, use an API that documents raw HTML input, URL input, authentication, PDF options, and how to receive the resulting file. HTML2PDF.app, HTMLPDF.dev, and HTML2PDF.co.uk document API-based conversion patterns; their request formats are provider-specific. Start with the provider’s own documentation rather than copying a generic example.
For example, HTML2PDF.app documents authenticated requests and says its API key should be used from a backend, server-side scripts, or trusted jobs. Its conversion documentation also notes that CSS media mode, available fonts and resources, and JavaScript load timing can affect rendering. Use its current API reference at HTML2PDF.app documentation for the endpoint, authentication, request body, and PDF response handling. HTMLPDF.dev documents its input and options at HTMLPDF.dev API documentation. HTML2PDF.co.uk describes its API at HTML2PDF.co.uk API documentation.

Do not treat a sample request for one provider as compatible with another. In particular, do not put an API key in frontend JavaScript or a public page: clients can inspect code and requests. Keep credentials on a server or in a trusted job, follow the provider’s documented authentication method, and save the binary PDF response as a file rather than assuming the response is JSON.

}This is an example to adapt, not a setting every converter applies identically. If the service offers CSS media options, check whether it renders screen or print styles. A page designed for one mode may look different in the other.
Control page breaks for tables and code
Long tables can split across pages, and wide code blocks can run past the printable area. Where the renderer supports standard print CSS, try rules such as break-inside: avoid on short rows or blocks, and allow long tables to split rather than forcing an entire table onto one page. For wide code, consider wrapping lines or using landscape orientation. Always preview a representative long page; a rule that avoids one bad break can leave a large blank area elsewhere.

A browser print preview shows the page after it has loaded in that browser. A server-side converter may fetch resources separately, and external fonts, images, or JavaScript may not be ready when the PDF is rendered. HTML2PDF.app specifically identifies media mode, available fonts and resources, and JavaScript timing as factors. If an asset is missing, verify that it is reachable to the converter and that the page has finished rendering before changing margins or scale.

Protect private HTML and credentials
A local browser workflow keeps the HTML on your device during the conversion, which is preferable when the content is confidential and an online service’s handling is unclear. For online tools, read the retention terms before uploading source or sending a URL: the source HTML may contain secrets, personal data, or internal links, and a URL can reveal private page names.
Policies differ by provider. HTML2PDF.co.uk states that PDFs are served from memory and POST-submitted HTML is not stored, while URLs may be retained in conversion history. HTML2PDF.app says generated PDFs are processed temporarily and that selected metadata or a source URL may be retained in logs. Review each provider’s current policy at HTML2PDF.co.uk API documentation and HTML2PDF.app documentation before sending sensitive material; those statements should not be generalized to other services or future policy versions.
Troubleshoot common conversion problems
- The PDF shows HTML tags rather than a page. The source was probably opened as text or pasted into a field that expects a URL. Open the .html file in a browser, or use a converter’s raw-HTML field.
- Colors or background images are missing. Enable Background graphics in the browser print settings. In a converter, check whether its rendering mode supports the relevant CSS and whether the background asset is available.
- Fonts or images are absent. Confirm that external resources load in the source page and are accessible to the renderer. For an API conversion, check the service’s guidance on resources and rendering timing; private or blocked assets may not be fetched.
- JavaScript content is missing or incomplete. The PDF may have been rendered before scripts finished. Wait for the page to finish in a browser, or use a converter option or documented workflow that allows time for scripts to run. Do not assume all converters wait in the same way.
- Text is cut off or too small. Check paper size, orientation, margins, and scale in the print preview. Use landscape for genuinely wide content; reducing scale too far makes text hard to read.
- Tables or code split badly. Add or adjust print CSS, reduce unnecessary width, or change orientation. Re-export and inspect page boundaries rather than judging from the first page alone.
- An online conversion fails on a private page. A service may not share your browser’s login session. Use browser printing while signed in, or follow the provider’s documented way to supply authorized content. Never place credentials in a public URL or exposed client-side code.
- An API request returns an error or a non-PDF response. Verify the provider’s current endpoint, authentication method, accepted input field, and PDF response handling. Confirm that you sent either the documented raw HTML or URL field, not both where the API forbids it.

Can I convert HTML to PDF without installing software?
Yes. A modern browser can print a rendered page or local HTML file to PDF, and some online converters provide a browser interface for pasted markup. Browser printing avoids uploading the file to a conversion service.

Can I convert a private webpage by entering its URL into an online tool?
Not necessarily. A converter may not have your authenticated browser session. Use the browser where you are already signed in, or consult the provider’s documented access method.
Will the PDF always look exactly like the web page?
