Convert a DOCX file with ConvertAPI
ConvertAPI’s route is /convert/docx/to/pdf. Its example sends the source file as multipart form data and authenticates with a Bearer token. The documentation’s exact endpoint parameters and schema can change. Use the ConvertAPI OpenAPI schema to confirm the live request and response contract, including any required fields. The example above demonstrates the documented multipart-and-Bearer pattern; it is not a guarantee about every account configuration.
Request-to-output workflow
- Create an account and get credentials. Store the API token in a server-side secret manager or environment variable, not in browser code, a public repository, or client-side application bundle.
- Choose how to send the file. For a local DOCX, use the multipart
Fileupload shown in ConvertAPI’s guide. Ensure the process can read the file and that the form field is spelled exactly as documented. - Request DOCX-to-PDF conversion. Call the
/convert/docx/to/pdfroute with Bearer authentication. SetStoreFile=trueif you want the documented temporary download URL. - Check the response before consuming it. Treat an unsuccessful HTTP response or an unexpected response body as a failed conversion, rather than assuming a PDF was produced. Confirm the response format against the current OpenAPI schema.
- Retrieve and validate the PDF. Download the temporary URL before its stated three-hour availability expires, or decode the inline Base64 response if you chose not to store the result remotely.
- Keep a representative test set. Compare the resulting PDFs with source DOCX files that exercise your actual fonts, page layouts, tables, images, and embedded objects.

- Import: make the DOCX available through a supported import path. The quickstart’s example uses a URL; consult the provider’s current documentation for supported storage integrations and their configuration.
- Convert: create a conversion task whose input is the imported document and whose output format is PDF.
- Export: add an export task to make the resulting file retrievable. The quickstart’s sample job exports a URL.

Verify production limits and handling terms
The cited getting-started and quickstart material does not comprehensively establish current production pricing, request or file-size limits, retention, privacy terms, or data residency for your account and region. Before sending confidential documents or committing to a production design, check each provider’s current official terms for those items. Confirm whether the files may be processed in a region acceptable to your organization and how long source and converted files may remain accessible.
Plan for retries and temporary output
Handle network errors and failed jobs explicitly. - Authentication is rejected: check that the credential is valid, sent in the required Bearer authorization header for the documented ConvertAPI pattern, and not expired or truncated. Keep secrets out of source control.
- The API cannot find the upload: verify that the local file path exists and is readable, and that the multipart field is named
File. Confirm that the request is actually sent as multipart form data. - The response is not a PDF file: inspect the HTTP status and response body first. With ConvertAPI, determine whether you received a download URL or inline Base64, then follow the matching retrieval or decoding path; do not write a JSON response directly to a
.pdffile. - A stored download link no longer works: ConvertAPI documents the URL as available for three hours. Fetch and persist the file within that window; if it has expired, submit the conversion again if appropriate.
- A CloudConvert job does not produce an output: check that the import, conversion, and export tasks are all present and correctly connected, and inspect task status using the current quickstart contract. A sandbox’s file whitelist can also prevent use of an arbitrary input.
- The PDF looks different from Word: compare against the original using your own rendering test set. Check font availability, page dimensions, margins, and layout elements, then assess whether the discrepancy is acceptable or needs an alternate conversion approach.
- A test works but production is blocked: confirm whether you are using a trial or sandbox rather than assuming it permits unrestricted live traffic. Review the provider’s current production terms and account limits.
