The right way to convert code into an image depends on where the code is: use a code-image generator for a polished snippet card, an editor extension for a quick capture of selected lines, or browser automation for code already rendered on a webpage. For a repeatable webpage capture, Playwright can save an element, viewport, or full page as an image.
Choose the right method for your code
| What you have | Best-fit workflow | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| A source snippet or file | Code-image generator such as Carbon | You want a deliberately styled image to share in a tutorial, presentation, or post. |
| Code selected in VS Code | A compatible editor screenshot extension | You want to capture selected lines without leaving the editor. |
| A code block already displayed on a webpage | Browser automation such as Playwright | You need a repeatable screenshot of a rendered page or element. |
These workflows produce different results: a generator styles source code as a designed card, while an editor or browser screenshot captures what is visually on screen. Pick based on whether presentation or faithful capture matters more.
Make a styled image from a code snippet
Carbon is designed to turn source code into a shareable image. Its project documentation describes importing or entering code, adjusting its appearance, and exporting PNG or SVG. You can paste a snippet, type one, or import a file or GitHub gist.
- Open Carbon and paste or import the code you want to show.
- Set the language so syntax highlighting is appropriate. If colors look wrong, check this before changing the theme.
- Choose a syntax theme and adjust the card’s visual appearance.
- Review the image at its intended display size. Make sure long lines, indentation, and the final line are visible and legible.
- Export as PNG for a broadly usable raster image or SVG when you need a scalable vector image.
A code card is not a substitute for a code sample readers can copy. If readers may want to reuse the snippet, include the text alongside the image or use Carbon’s documented sharing or embedding option to provide a route back to the code.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the result readable
- Keep the snippet short enough to read at the image’s likely on-screen size.
- Check line wrapping and horizontal overflow; a cropped line can change the meaning of code.
- Use a language setting that matches the source, and inspect syntax colors rather than assuming automatic detection is correct.
- Preview the exported image itself. A design that looks good in the editor may be too small when inserted into a document or post.
Capture selected code from VS Code
A VS Code Marketplace extension can provide a selection-to-image workflow: select code, open its preview, adjust the appearance, and copy or save the result. The reviewed listing describes PNG, SVG, and GIF output. Because this is a marketplace listing rather than official VS Code documentation, check that the particular extension is maintained and supports your installed editor version before relying on it.
- Find a suitable code screenshot extension in the VS Code Marketplace and review its current compatibility and maintenance status.
- Install it in the editor version you use.
- Select only the lines you intend to share, then open the extension’s preview using the command or UI documented in its listing.
- Inspect the preview for missing lines, unwanted editor content, and readable font size.
- Copy or save the image in a format the extension currently supports.
Extensions differ, so do not assume every listing supports the same formats or controls. If the extension stops working after an editor update, check its listing for a compatibility update or use a standalone generator instead.
Screenshot code already rendered in a browser with Playwright
Use Playwright when the target is a page or code block already rendered in a browser, particularly when the capture must be scripted or repeated. Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots; its screenshot API documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats and options such as clipping. A page screenshot captures rendered pixels, including the page’s layout and styling, rather than turning source text into a designed code card.

The following JavaScript example assumes you have installed Playwright and have a page available. It navigates to a page, waits for a code element, and saves that element as a PNG. Replace the URL and selector with the page and code block you need:
Recommended Free Tools
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const codeBlock = page.locator('pre code').first();
await codeBlock.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await codeBlock.screenshot({ path: 'code-block.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright’s guide also shows the basic page capture call:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
Use that form for the visible page viewport. For a complete page, use the full-page option; for a particular element, call screenshot on a locator. The API can also return image data instead of saving directly to a path, which is useful when another step in your program processes the image. See the Playwright Screenshots guide and Page screenshot API for current options.

Make captures repeatable
- Wait for the relevant element to be visible before capturing it; navigation completion alone may not mean client-rendered content is ready.
- Capture the code element if you need just the code, or the page if the surrounding context matters.
- Use a stable page state and viewport when comparing screenshots across runs.
- Choose an explicit output path and format so later steps know which file to process.
Or skip the browser setup
If your target is a webpage, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. The request below saves a WebP image of the supplied URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://example.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Choose an output format and protect your code
PNG, SVG, JPEG, or WebP?
The available format depends on the workflow. Carbon documents PNG and SVG exports; the reviewed VS Code extension listing describes PNG, SVG, and GIF; Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot options. Check the current interface or API for the tool you choose. PNG is a straightforward choice for code screenshots; SVG is useful when you want scalable artwork and the generating tool offers it.

The syntax colors are wrong
In a code-image generator, set the source language explicitly and then choose a theme. Syntax highlighting depends on the language identification; changing the card’s appearance alone may not fix it.

Inspect the preview and the saved image, not only the editing surface. Adjust the layout or capture a narrower code element, and ensure the final image is large enough to read. In a browser capture, confirm that the locator targets the intended block rather than an enclosing region with clipping or overflow.

The browser screenshot is blank or incomplete
The page may still be rendering when the screenshot runs. Wait for the target element to become visible and, if needed, wait for the page’s own content to finish loading before capturing. A network-idle condition can help on suitable pages, but the element-specific wait makes the target readiness explicit.
The editor extension no longer works
Check the extension’s current Marketplace listing for maintenance and compatibility with your VS Code version. If its support is unclear or the workflow is broken, use a standalone code-image generator or capture a rendered page with browser automation.
Which workflow should you use?
- Choose a generator when you want a polished, deliberately styled image from source text.
- Choose an editor extension when convenience and capturing a selected block inside VS Code matter most.
- Choose Playwright when the code is already on a webpage and you need automated, repeatable captures of a page or element.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a code image back into editable source code?
Not reliably. These workflows render code as pixels or artwork; keep and share the original text separately if others need to copy or edit it.
Which format should I use for sharing a code screenshot?
Use a format supported by your chosen tool and destination. PNG is widely usable for screenshots; SVG is an option when the generator provides vector export and scalable artwork is useful.
Can I use an image instead of a code block in documentation?
Use an image for visual explanation, but provide the source as selectable text as well when readers need to copy, search, or use assistive technology.
