You may not need to convert AV1 to H.264 at all: YouTube Live currently accepts AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and OBS supports both codecs. Convert only if another part of your workflow cannot use AV1 or you specifically want an H.264 output. For a low-end PC, doing that conversion offline is usually a better fit than asking the PC to encode AV1 in real time—but the right settings depend on your hardware and target stream.
Check whether conversion is necessary
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC/H.265 and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. OBS’s formats guide also covers AV1 and H.264. If your OBS version, selected encoder and YouTube workflow accept the AV1 file, you can use it without converting. Confirm the encoder options shown in your OBS installation rather than assuming every computer offers every codec.
H.264 remains a useful fallback when a player, editor or other workflow component requires it. OBS describes H.264 as its default codec and broadly playable across devices and software. A file’s container is separate from its video codec: changing or remuxing a container does not turn AV1 video into H.264. Actual conversion requires decoding AV1 and encoding the video again.

Convert offline when H.264 is required
Offline conversion lets the computer take the time it needs to create an H.264 file before the live session. Keep the original AV1 file, use an H.264 encoder that is actually available on your system, and set the output resolution and frame rate to what you can stream reliably. Re-encoding is lossy and may take substantial CPU time. Check the finished file’s picture and audio before using it.

Use a compatible hardware encoder if available
OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS identifies NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync Video as hardware-encoding paths on compatible systems. Availability depends on the specific GPU, driver and OBS setup; check OBS’s encoder menu instead of assuming that a brand or model family guarantees support.
OBS also notes that software AV1 encoding requires a high-end CPU for real-time compression. That is a reason to avoid assuming a low-end machine can encode AV1 live, not proof that every AV1 file must be converted. CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

Test before relying on the setup
Keep the source file until the converted file plays correctly and its audio has been checked. Then test the complete OBS-to-YouTube setup with representative movement and sound. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test; a successful local conversion alone does not prove the live stream is stable.
Set OBS and YouTube for the stream you can sustain
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations are shown below. They are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular PC or internet connection can sustain the stream.

| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03. Choose a resolution and frame rate that your system can render and encode and that your upload connection can sustain steadily. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams to create different output formats, so do not treat your outgoing setting as the only viewing quality your audience can receive.
Reduce OBS load if the stream struggles
- Lower output resolution: OBS says this reduces the GPU resources needed.
- Drop frame rate: Lowering FPS reduces rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes: Reduce the complexity of sources and effects if rendering or encoding is falling behind.
- Keep the base canvas unless there is a reason to change it: OBS notes that changing the canvas can require repositioning sources; consider it only if resources are severely constrained.
Change one setting at a time and retest using representative content. The “low-end PC” label alone is not enough to predict performance: the result depends on the CPU, GPU, encoder, output settings and scene.

Troubleshoot common conversion and streaming problems
OBS or a player will not use the AV1 file
First confirm whether the selected OBS build, encoder and workflow accept AV1. If another required part of the workflow does not, convert to H.264 with an available encoder. Preserve the AV1 original and test the converted file before a live session.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The conversion is too slow or the computer is heavily loaded
Offline conversion can take substantial CPU time. Check whether a compatible hardware encoder is available in the software you are using. If the issue occurs during the live stream, reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify OBS scenes; do not assume a hardware encoder is available just because the PC has a GPU.

The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor stream health
Check that your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, then lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. Verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use a test stream to observe YouTube’s health messages before the actual event.
The H.264 file has missing or unexpected audio
Audio handling is a separate conversion choice. Confirm that the conversion process retained or intentionally encoded the audio, then play the output from beginning to end before loading it into OBS.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
