To save a webpage as a PDF, open it in a browser, choose Print, then select a PDF destination in the print dialog. To make an editable DOCX, first create or obtain a PDF, then open it in desktop Microsoft Word and save it as a Word document. These are two different jobs: a PDF preserves a page for viewing or printing, while DOCX is intended for editing.
Choose the right format and method
For one webpage, the built-in browser print command is usually the simplest route to a PDF. If you need to capture linked pages or more of a site, Adobe Acrobat desktop offers URL-to-PDF controls for multiple levels. If your goal is editable text in Word, use a PDF as an intermediate file and convert it with desktop Word.

The official Microsoft and Adobe help pages describe these procedures but do not provide controlled comparisons of conversion speed or fidelity. No method can be assumed to preserve every page design exactly.
Save a webpage as a PDF from Microsoft Edge
Edge’s print interface lets you inspect and adjust a page before saving it. Microsoft documents Ctrl+P on Windows and Command+P on macOS, along with settings for layout, margins, background graphics, headers, and footers. - Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to save. If it is a long or dynamic page, scroll through it first so that content which loads as you scroll has a chance to appear.
- Open Print. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, or open the Edge menu and choose Print.
- Choose a PDF destination. In the print dialog, select the PDF destination available on your device rather than a physical printer. The label varies by platform.
- Check the preview and settings. Adjust paper size, orientation, margins, scaling, and headers or footers. Enable background graphics if the page’s colors or backgrounds matter to the saved copy.
- Save and inspect the file. Use the dialog’s save control, choose a location and filename, then open the PDF to check that the relevant content is present and readable.
Reduce clutter before printing
Microsoft notes that Immersive Reader can provide a less cluttered print workaround when it is available for the site. It is not supported on every website. You can also select a portion of a page and invoke Print to print only that selection; check the preview to confirm what will be included.
Why the PDF may not match the screen
A webpage is not necessarily laid out for paper. Navigation, advertisements, interactive components, content that loads on scroll, or site-specific print behavior can change what appears in the output. Preview the pages before saving, and check the saved PDF afterward rather than assuming it is a pixel-for-pixel copy.
Use Acrobat desktop for a URL or multiple site levels
Adobe documents a desktop workflow for turning a webpage URL or an HTML file into a PDF. In Acrobat, go to Create > Web page, enter the URL or browse to the HTML file, set any capture options you need, and create the PDF. The controls can capture multiple levels or the entire site and can limit the capture to the same URL path or server. Use the multi-level controls only when you actually need additional pages: they change the task from saving one page to collecting linked content. Review the scope and advanced settings before creating the PDF. The documented Acrobat workflow produces a PDF, not a DOCX.

Convert the PDF to an editable DOCX in desktop Word
If you need to edit the text, create or obtain the PDF first, then open that PDF in the desktop version of Microsoft Word. Microsoft says desktop Word can convert a PDF into an editable format such as DOCX. The conversion is not a guarantee that a complex page will retain its original design.
- Create the webpage PDF using Edge Print, Acrobat, or another source.
- Open the PDF in desktop Word and accept the prompt to convert it into an editable Word document, if shown.
- Review the converted text, tables, images, and page breaks. Correct any changes that matter to your use.
- Save the result as a Word document in DOCX format.
A PDF reader can display and print a PDF but cannot edit its contents. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes that from desktop Word’s conversion capability: View, print, and edit PDFs in a PDF reader.

Can Word for the web import a URL directly?
Do not rely on Word for the web as a direct URL-to-DOCX converter. Microsoft’s format documentation says Word for the web cannot open HTML or PDF files as document inputs: Differences between using a document in the browser and in Word. The documented conversion path here uses desktop Word after a PDF has been created.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The print preview is missing content
Some pages load content only after scrolling or interaction. Scroll through the page before printing, check whether the site offers a simpler reader view, and inspect the preview page by page. If you only need a section, select it and print the selection where supported.
The PDF has clipped text or awkward page breaks
Try a different orientation, paper size, scaling, or margin setting and recheck the preview. Background graphics and headers or footers can also affect the printable area. There is no universal setting that guarantees the same result across websites.
The saved PDF is cluttered
Try Immersive Reader if Edge offers it for that page. Otherwise, check whether the site has a print-friendly view or whether printing only a selected passage is sufficient.

The DOCX layout changed
That is a conversion issue rather than proof the original PDF is corrupt. Open the PDF in desktop Word, then inspect tables, images, columns, and page breaks and make corrections before sharing the DOCX. Microsoft does not promise perfect layout preservation.
Word for the web will not open the PDF or HTML page
Use the desktop Word application for the PDF-to-editable-document step. Word for the web’s documented input support excludes HTML and PDF, so creating a PDF first does not make it a supported web-app input.
Acrobat captured more than intended
Return to Create > Web page and review the levels, path, and server restrictions before starting the capture. For a single page, use the browser print workflow instead of multi-level site capture.
Which workflow should you use?
- Choose browser Print for a straightforward PDF of one page and basic control over paper output.
- Choose Acrobat desktop when you need URL or HTML input and want to configure capture of linked site levels.
- Choose desktop Word after PDF creation when editable document content is the goal, and allow time to review and repair the conversion.
- Choose an API workflow when you need repeatable automated captures, an image or PDF output, or an AI-agent workflow; it does not replace the PDF-to-DOCX editing step.
For additional context, Microsoft Learn has a 2022 community response mentioning a Chrome extension that saved webpage content as DOCX. Can I convert a URL straight to DOCX in Word for the web?
The documented Word for the web input formats do not include HTML or PDF. The supported workflow described here is to create a PDF and then convert it using desktop Word.
